I have my first hair appointment ever today. I made it 29 years with only my mom and myself cutting it (and one lady in las vegas almost 3 years ago). but I just can't take it anymore. momma lives across the country and she was too sick to cut it over christmas. and I can't figure out how to cut the back very well. plus I kinda want a new style.
anyway, umm, what happens when you get your haircut? any tips?
I hope my hairdresser is gay like in the movies!

i TOTALLY look online for hairstyles and ideas almost every month when i go.
mad rad hair is one good site. it has pics just found on the interent of crazy cool styles. it also has good examples of neat color.

i think my hair comes out the best when i just tell Jeanie to do whatever she wants. she gets really creative.

They like it if you stroke their thighs while they shampoo you, and they expect a tip.

You should show up wearing a cape, with your hair already washed and tell them you'd prefer if they use your knife instead of their own.

I am the same way. I've always cut my own hair, or my mom.
but I'm just getting sick and tired of struggling with the back, so I'm debating finally going to a hairdresser but im scared they will fuck it up.
make sure you ask for the person who knows how to cut curly hair. I've heard that from my friends before.
yeah, make sure they don't screw it up by giving specific directions and being adament about it.

I've only liked my haircuts immediately after they cut it, or several weeks later.
I will offer serious advice. Dorothy, describe your hair to me.

Serious advice: ask for the classic, long in the back, short on top, clean on the sides.

25 minutes til my appointment! aah!
I don't think I have time for anymore advice, I know my hair pretty well, so I'll be okay. I guess I was asking about how to behave or what it's like to get your hair cut at a salon?
the salon I'm going to has cupcakes!

They really do expect a tip, I wasn't joking about that.
Depending on how nice (expensive) the salon is, one person might shampoo you and another cut your hair. They'll both expect a tip.
Most hairdressers talk your ear off and ask you a million personal questions. I usually try to ask them about hairdressing because I figure most people don't ask that. I have no idea if this is appreciated or not.

cupcakes are my second favorite form of cake behind donuts! actual cake is third.

I didn't think they still did the shampoo thing at hair salons.

great, ask for our advice and then just zip off without really giving us a chance. Hey, where's Zippo these days? I miss her.

They are still pushing the Tea stuff in shampoo. Don't believe in the hype. Want you hair to smell good? Just buy a candle with a feed bag and light the candle, drop it in the feed bag, and place it on your head. In the long run, that will be cheaper than buying expensive temporary smelling shampoo and conditioner.
But by all means, VO5. Nothing beats a nice evening at home, watching Dancing with the Stars with a little hot oil treatment, you know what I'm saying? Aww yea you do. hi5.

damn I wish I saw this sooner.
First off, you should always check reviews! Yelp.com is good for that. Also, try to have some patience and wait to see someone that gets a tad booked up. Anytime I've been impatient and took anyone, even from a well-reviewed spot, they have BUTCHERED my hair.
Having photos of what you want, or styles that are at least similar to what you want, is handy.
Sometimes the hairdressers like to talk. Humor them.
Don't forget to tip! Unless they fuck up your hair. Then tell them to fuck off.

well, I did it! and then I went shopping and saw He's Just Not That Into You with some girlfriends. just like a red-blooded american girl should.
it was one of the most stressful days of my life. I'm not cut out for so much girl stuff in one day. for pete's sake, I even did yoga! and went for a run! and drank diet pepsi!
fuckin gross.
anyway, the haircut really wasn't as stressful as it could have been. the salon opened a few months ago by my house and looked super cute, I decided to make an appointment based on the reviews on yelp (solid 5 stars from over 30 reviewers!). I'm a pretty big nerd about researching things, so I was pretty confident in my choice...but I'm shy so I was very nervous about how to act once actually at the salon.
I think my stylist was nervous when I told him it was my first time getting a haircut in a salon. and then more nervous that my mom was a stylist, and then even more nervous because my hair is long (down to the small of my back) and ridiculous thick. he didn't talk much at all, so then I didn't really talk. the music was loud (beirut and fleet foxes, nothing jarring) in there, so it wasn't too big of a deal, then I noticed that the other girl getting her hair cut wasn't talking at all. and that suddenly just made me relax.
and somehow some way, we started chatting a little bit and I felt more comfortable. especially when I decided that the dude was doing a good job and that his lack of talking or ass-kissing showed that he was a genuine person just trying to get a job done. and so we both kind of relaxed by the end and were talking more. also, we were both wearing purple shirts, and he had a necklace with a tiny gun on it. so we're probably going to be best friends now.
he did a great job, and I gave him a good tip. I'll definitely be back.
