im late to the game. frank zappa is a god.
i started watching his interviews a few months ago, and just a few nights ago i stayed up till daylight watching more. i watched hours and hours of him talking before i ever listened to one of his songs. then i started reading lyrics without listening to his music (i have hardly ever payed attention to lyrics).
im so blown away by this person, i just wanted to say so.

i saw apart of a set by "zappa plays zappa" last summer and it was pretty rad. i don't know a whole lot of his tunes outside of the "greatest hits" type of stuff but i do enjoy it on occasion.
he was certainly a compelling character, to say the least

I'm a fan, but he doesn't make much of an argument in that Crossfire debate. I'm not an advocate of censorship, but I'm pretty sure that people like Hitler influenced a lot of people with "just words". He's a lot more articulate in his songs.

Oh, I didn't get as far as the other guy bringing up Hitler. Maybe it was too early to play the Hitler card anyway.

yeah that part made me think, the hitler thing - you're right. im mostly in awe of his convictions and how willing he was to be honest at all costs, integrity. im still digesting a lot of it. im having a hard time articulating it, music aside. someone help me out rrgh
who was the guy on the left? he seems equally in awe during the whole thing

not a huge fan, but when he was with the mothers of invention they made the album "absolutely free" with the song "brown shoes don't make it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Shoes_Don%27t_Make_It)" and I consider that song to be a masterpiece, sonically the production is still on the edge.
Plus the mothers of invention made my all time favorite album cover/title (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weasels_Ripped_My_Flesh).
after this period his music seemed to sort of be random and noodling to me, not nearly as good imo as his early years, i can hardly stomach apostrophe (') it just sounds bad and uninventive when i know he was trrying to do the opposite of that.
