Lately I've really begun to like Black Milk, especially since I picked up the Tronic album which features the ridiculously awesome track Losing Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HY5r_4xrEA) featuring Royce. Anyway, I got to thinking who my favorite MC-producer combo was, and I have to admit, Milk is right up there on my list. If you haven't heard the Tronic album, I'd recommend it, all I'm saying. He has one of the more creative flows I've heard in awhile, so click on that link so we can talk about it.

So talk people.

I'd probably go with Kool Keith. He's tapped his imagination and created many sorts of things, under many sorts of aliases.

Black Milk is the truth. Have you heard Elzhi? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRNcR4o9kDA)

I like Tronic better than his first album Popular Demand. Popular Demand sounded like a Slum Village album (who he produced for after Dilla left SV) which isn't to say it's bad, but there aren't any standout tracks like "Losing Out" and the songs sound so similar in production due soul samples that it's kind of hard to distinguish one track from another. That being said, it still is probably one of the top ten or fifteen hip hop albums of 2007.

As a matter of fact, there's only one song on Tronic that contains a soul sample, the song "Try," and he even apologizes for using the sample in the first verse, saying he didn't intend to use soul samples this time.

I'd download them both, but overall Tronic is the better sounding album in my view

Self Titled Slum Village FTW. Most things affliated with that crew = gold.

I was going to say The Beatnuts but then I realized that most of their albums are lackluster, they get annoying quick, and generally hand their best beats out to anyone who isnt them.

Black Milk, Elzhi, Havoc, and Beatnuts were what came to mind. Not really crazy about Alchemist as a rapper, but he's easily a favorite producer.

Also:

Andre 3000
Scram Jones
El-P
Large Professor
Lord Finesse

88 Keys and Kanye probably qualify, overall, but I don't really think of either as "MCs".

"Forgot About Dre" already?

Until he writes his own songs, yes, I will forget about Dre

RZA is up there.

Milk is not (for me). I check back on him every few months but don't really see the hype.

Elzhi is hot sometimes but not consistent enough.

Kanye deserves a mention, no matter what you think of his raps.

And if the term "MC" doesn't include writing then Dre has to be up there. Not only did he pretty much birth the West but that motherfucker is also smooth as butter on the mic.

Dizzee Rascal gets on my list too, fuck the haters.

I think that General guy who founded New Kids and New Edition should be up there.

haha I still haven't checked out Black Milk and Elzhi (not that I'm aware of, anyway). I'll get onto that, boss.

Beatnuts were solid up until Stone Crazy. That had some gold, but was patchy. RZA made some absolute dung post-Forever (and even on Forever). Dre probably has the least shitty poor output; when he's bad (zoom zoom or whatever it was with LL) it's still pretty good.

I can't believe nobody said Count Bass D. I rate him, anyway. Lord Finesse would be my pick; in fact he's probably my favourite hip-hop artist pretty much ever.

Edit: Dizzee was a good call.

Edan

RZA...but this has to be quantified, cuz he has put out some shit in his time. But on his day, he's one of my favourites.

Forgot about Pete Rock. Yeah, he sounds like a subdued Psycho Les and probably can't hold down an entire album on his own, but he's better than Dilla or Diamond D ever were. And his beats are not so bad.

Dre probably is my overall favorite producer/rapper combo, but the more blatant the ghostwriting becomes, the harder it gets to look past it. Especially with anything Em writes for him.

Edan... Beauty & The Beat!
Q-Tip
Beastie Boys
The Streets... he makes some really interesting stuff.

Not an absolute fave, but I want to give a shout to Inspectah Deck... I love his flow. Most of his beats are actually pretty good too.

I'm not too familiar with the Black Milk stuff - I think I've just got a 7" or something by him that wasn't particularly memorable, but I'll do some further investigation - thanks

I'm a big fan of Pete Rock and his beats are usually pretty tasty but he could be more active on the mic. Not sure what you've got against Diamond D - he's made some classics but I'd have to check the production credits to clarify which of his tunes are self produced and written.

Otherwise I'd agree with Lord Finnesse, Edan, Q Tip, El P and Doom but I'm sure there's a lot of people being forgotten here? RZA can be a bit hit or miss but has done some classics. Did Schooly D produce his own stuff? And KRS did some of his own decent enough tracks too if I remember rightly? Showbiz has produced and rhymed on some classics. Of course the Beasties have always been involved in their own production and a lot of artists choose samples without doing the hands-on engineering (e.g. the Biz, but some of his big tracks are ghost-written with Big Daddy Kane and Marley Marl does the hands-on production)

For the UK I'd have to say Farma G from Task Force and Jehst as they've both been responsible for some UK classics.

got tronic (black milk) from the library and it's hot enough to revive this thread for the sleepers.
