a cartoon-movie sound effects or voice person?
I'm always fiddling around with instruments and effects while I'm watching movies by myself..
I know how to do cartoon character impressions to a T and I've always got my friends telling me to impersonate characters such as Pete the Puma often and I've got my own character voices that I've made myself.
In elementary school, our class had a tortoise and the hair play with paper mache puppets and I was the tortoise using my own, self made puppet and had a very distinct voice for him as well. I swear I've made some of my classmates' parents cream their jeans after making the tortoise come to life with my work.
Seriously, all these years I've been farting around in the wrong line of business.

You have to have played the lead in Star Wars.

you must increase your bust has already been covered in the boobies thread.
haha. Covered.
As you do in any business, work ya way up. Get in touch with an animator who needs a voice guy, stick it on you tube and you'll soon find out if you suck or not. Pimp out ya shit until some1 gives you a job.

eh?
How about getting an agent to see if they can get you some stuff?
Maybe you should overdub some existing cartoons and put them up on youtube?

What's the best way of getting in touch with an animator though? Craigslist? I don't even want to begin searching there again..
I'm just a guy who has an ear for things with non- expensive equipment doing everything. I also hadn't had any college for this but darnit, if I was offered a job in something that I really want to do, I'll come out of my pocket, pick up the proper equipment and set a real example.

I can see where you're coming from but to me, it's like being in a cover band.
I'll sing songs for karaoke for good times and all but I'll never try to imitate a good song. If it's a crappy song then I'll go ahead and leave it to the crappy band to do their thing.

Well numbnuts, the longer way round is to make your own animation
Just find some old warner cartoons or something and do it to them. Gotta start somewhere can't go from nobody to pro in one leap.

Putting sound effects over film is a job in itself. called 'Foley sound'.

I know. I always get soul sucking jobs that cease any of my own ideas and thoughts of what I really want to do for a living.
The thing is, I agree with what you've initially said but I can't even find the time to research for good movie makers so I can overdub the cartoons and such.

Most people who do voices for cartoons come to it from having studied theater/acting.

or just being fortunate enough to know the right people.
your best bet would be offering your services to students. if they do animation at any universitys or colleges or whatever, put some flyers up around that department.
foley sound is more to do with recording the sound of putting a cup down on a table at the same time as the person on the film. or footstep noises and stuff.

they use weird stuff to create some noises though, the doors on the death star are just the sound of a piece of paper being taken out of an envelope. FACT. it must be i saw it on QI.

Didn't they use a pen of pigs for 'Carrie'?
I think I'll come out of my pocket and get a different recorder. I don't think a used BOSSbr-864 would look good on a resume.
Kaiser and I are going to team up and do this.
Get it kaiser? Team up? Inside joke, herr herr.

i've always been the same way. good with imitating voices and making my own weird ones. my husband makes me try to do different voices all the time. it's fun. i've often thought of trying to do the same thing. :)

True, it really is fascinating. A few years ago at the museum I was working at, we did a series of workshops on special effects and one week it was all about how to do different sounds. Snapping a stick of celery was for breaking bones, and rumbling thunder can be done with sort of 'waving' a piece of sheet metal. I remember. Then there are the ones which are combined sounds - I remember that we did dinosaur 'voices' by mixing recordings of an elephant trumpeting, a motorcycle revving, and an eagle I think - I don't remember exactly but essentially we were trying to reproduce the way they had done the t-rex in Jurassic Park. (Or was it the velociraptor?)

Lol!
Sorry about the nonsense posts guys. Working doubles and lack of sleep with a few beers on top. It's one of the reasons I need to quit this line of work. It's always so damn demanding.
I'm taking all your advice. I'll be making my resume for it this weekend and I'll probably watch some Tom and Jerry -Pecos Pest and fiddle around with making some sound effects for it.
