We're at the vw dealer looking at a 09 touareg. Could possibly drive off with it today.
0% down.. Hmm. My place sucks though. I may have to buy a south African car alarm for it.

If I lived in NYC, I don't think I'd have a car. Don't you have to pay to park it somewhere too? Suck.
I always hear conflicting views on VW vehicles. Some people swear by them, but I also hear a lot of complaints about them. Most typically that when something does go wrong it's expensive as hell. Every VW (or related - such as Audi) product I've been in seems top notch though. If you get it, post up some pics of your new sweet ride.

I hear ya about the living in NY and not wanting to own a car. I had the same view when I first got here and I pretty much swore by it.
We're in queens, it's not that hard to find parking and we're looking for a better place to move to. Found some real quiet places.
Anyway, not having a vehicle makes us basically confined to the city with really no personal freedom. Having a car, we can travel out once and a while to other cities to visit and such.
It's pretty certain the car is a done deal. They have like a 3 step program and we're going back monday to pick it up.

yep, we're financing. If I buy this brand new I probably won't want to sell it and keep it for its entirety.
Squirrel, I've owned a 96 jetta and had it for 6 years, I bought it used and it had 28,000 miles and during those 6 years, nothing went wrong with it. I was impressed.

Great, miss indecisive strikes again.
It was her idea to go look at the vehicle and pick it up soon but she backs out at the last minute. "I don't think we need to have a big car payment like that."
We both work our asses off and can easily afford it. Got me all worked up and bam!

I know what you're saying but we owe this to ourselves. We've been saving and we go to work sick if we have to. I brought up that I'll pick up a part time job on the weekends.
What can I do though..
I understand that you work hard, but maybe you can meet in the middle.
Buy something that is not newer. Just like something to provide basic transportation or some shit. A shitbox that runs good.
I work in Queens or at the Queens/Nassau border, it is not as commuter-friendly as the rest of NYC. People think that since it is NYC, there are subways everywhere. You kinda need a car if you live in Queens.

I'm about to just come out of my pocket and get a clunker for like 2 grand.
I would have liked to have the car like now so we can get out of the city next weekend.
I'll convince her to get the touareg. If we couldn't afford it then I'd know when to back out. I have never had a brand new car either, this would be a nice start.
I'd just jump at the chance no questions asked if I had the opportunity to get something as nice as a Touareg
Really, really nice looking car.

Eric, there's no such thing as 0% financing.
Out of 500 cars that are sold at "0%", maybe one will actually be 0%.
Read that paper work inside and out. The price is hiked up somewhere in there.

I recommend getting a reliable used car that you can pay for outright.
I get the allure of having a new car...but is it really worth it if you have to get another job?
I dunno, there are a lot more things I'd rather spend money on than a car that could possibly get stolen/trashed.

Supply and demand have raised the prices of used cars, and dropped the prices of new cars. It could actually be cheaper to buy a new car in the long run of things.
Used cars still generally cost less than new ones, but a mix of drastic price cuts, rebates, and financing incetives is narowing the gap very quickly.
A $30,000 car wityh an annual percentage rate of 2.9 percent would cost $662.70 a month over four years. By comparison, a used car with an APR of 7 percent would cost 718.38, a total of $2,673 more over the same peruod.

I bought a new sport SUV in 2007, a RAV4 with the V6, I probably paid $5000 too much(cause it was new off the lot) and knew it at the time, but that was just the way went because it was the latest greatest thing at the time.
I easily put 15000 miles plus per year on the thing and it's still showroom clean in and out. I only could justify the payments and cost for this vehicle due to the travel time I am getting paid for as well as mileage tax deductions.
I can say now that if I had to do it over I would of probably gone luxury instead, a used Infinitii G series, Cadillac CTS, Acura or Lexus. I like to relax and have at least 270 HP under the hood. If you buy any of the luxury cars with 30,000 miles on them they are like you say as good as new. Plus about $8000 - $10000 less.
I recently was bumped up in LA with an Infinti G 37 rental and that car is a dream to drive. I would go pretty much nutz w/o a car.

Bizzump.
So we went today, to pick it up for sure. The model we saw had a gps and the price on the window, as is, was 39,300. Gps is not a big deal to me at all but..
We were about to pay 39,300 without the gps and to get the gps, it would be an additional 3,000. As said, honestly I could give a rat's ass if it had one cause I've got my own gps inside of me. But the mrs says it's a necessity so ok.
Now, we're looking at the audi q5, it comes with gps and the price is 37 and some change. Or we go with the touareg and pay an additional 3gs to have a gps put in it.
This is a fucking tough choice, either way, we're both content on driving and owning something nice by mid next week.
I'm going balder over this.

cant you get a gps for like $300?
Yeah, I suppose so, plus a little extra for installation. The gps for this is pretty advanced so it's a little pricey. DVD gps or some shit. I'm not even interested enough to look at the specs of any.
For all I care, I'll buy an old bulky ass army plugger and use that as my gps.
See, the thing is though, I don't remember to the t whether the model we were looking at had the gps or not because I don't care. The wife swears by it and the tag said 39,300.
I do remember talking to the salesman and telling him that I couldn't care less if it had a gps or not and then he quoted the price as being 39,300 without it.
So when we went today, the price for one without the gps was 39,300 when the mrs. remembered the model we were looking at had one and the price was 39,300 and she refused to get it.
It's a pretty solid discussion right now to pay extra for it...Pay cheaper for a different brand and it is equipped.
Both Audi and VW are trusty brands. I'm very partial to VW because I've owned one, beat it up, put some miles on it and didn't have problems because I'm very keen on the scheduled maintenance and I also have knowledge of repairing a car as well, if it needs it.
Audi, I'm willing to give it a whirl.

Shit, every car dealer offers the best, right? Yet, there's one thing you have to keep in mind. Price ranges.
Ford even makes excellent cars. If you want to pay some bucks. You always have the option of paying less for, let's say, a focus, something that gets you around and such so, you're not too worried about caring for it and it starts junking up on you.
Point is, I'll try to polish a turd. Give me the crappiest make of car and I'll try to do my best with it to maintain it and keep it on the road. I'll have to put some money into it.. Or I can eliminate some problems by just paying a little more.
If you know that you are getting what you're paying for.. Know all of the downsides and such then you know what to expect and you're not stupefied if something happens. Take advantage of your warranty.
Also, pmcs goes a long way.

haha. I love a Honda Pilot, even the element or civic. I like Toyotas. Famous old saying about Toyota, "The engine lasts longer than the body." True words, both die hard brands.
I was even looking at a Jeep again. They don't get the best consumer reviews either.
Everything gets its share of both good and bad remarks. No two ways about it. Movies, cars, guitars, amps, whatever.
If you know what the majority of the gripes are, keep an eye out for it. If it doesn't bother you, then go for it.

I'm an exterior, engine fucking person. I'll crawl under the darn thing to see what it can handle, I'll compare it to rocks, check the height, response.. I gunned that touareg at the getgo just to see how it jumps and I visualize the reaction of it being gunned on rough terrain.
All of those aspects were satisfying to me, I'm buying a car and I'm happy about it but, it doesn't have a gps.. Damn.

Unless you live in the outback, alaska, africa or the grand canyon you don't need one.

Broham, I've brought up the point of buying a suv while living in the city. I wasn't born in the city and I like hiking, camping, fishing and all that and I like to drive up to the places.

$500 says you'll spend 99% of the time driving it to places like the supermarket and Home Depot, and maybe .5% of the time driving it to these 'hiking, camping, fishing' places.

I've got an AWD Ford Edge (http://www.fordvehicles.com/crossovers/edge/?searchid=426441|28124907|205370176) and YES, 99% of the time I'm driving on the highway or around the city.
But it's really nice having the AWD for that 1% of the time when you're gonna need to get around when there's like 4" of snow and ice on the ground.
Also, just in case of an accident I'd rather be in an SUV or a truck rather than a Focus or Prius or whatever.
I had a really good friend of mine die in a Prius this past year because he got T-boned by an Expidition. He was 39 yo. and left behind 3 kids under the age of 10.

Until they break down and you have to go to the local Euro Auto Shop and the slimy Italian shopowner is about to pull a fast one on you with the price of ordering replacement parts...
this happens to almost every single Audi driver I have ever met, including my family.( we owned two Audi 5000 in the 80's and we ended up leaving one at the Shop and donating the other one for tax deductions)
Sal, the owner of the shop, knew us on a first name basis...
Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus is the way to go if you're not feeling patriotic and buying American.

I guess, it's very different here in Europe and especially because I live in Germany a lot. I drive a BMW and it's pretty much faultless. And Audi are seen as pretty solid cars aswell, much more upmarket than a Toyota or the like. I guess the US are not so much fans of Euro cars as we are. From all I have heard, any recent BMW, Audi or VW are excellent. I don't know what the fuck you Americans do to your cars or if you get shitty import versions but I can't imagine the fact that they are seen as shit cars.

I wouldn't mind a toyota, that FJ cruiser is fucking nice.
Then again, I wouldn't mind getting a VW or Audi either.

I have never seen this as a big issue. I have owned multiple VW's and have worked on and gathered parts for many German cars. They may be more $ to maintan especially for the higher class cars but most are.
Its not the 80's anymore.
Also Helvete many Americans love German cars. No matter what the make their are always people who dislike them for whatever reasons.

I bet it's pretty nice to have a brand new car, but I just can't fathom spending $40,000 on one. even if I had more than enough money.
but I guess that's just me, my dream car is a brown 1986 Jaguar xj6. they go for $5,000-$10,000 depending on what shape they're in.
I think VW's drive alright, but they have some design flaws. cort's boyfriend has a 2008 golf...or maybe a rabbit, dunno. anyway, the way the seats move is ridiculous, and the backseat is uncomfortable as hell. I hit my head on the dang door frame every time I get in and out. you practically have to roll out the door onto the ground to get out. it's an economy car though, so the fancier ones are probably better.

Our dealer was like a 6'7" dude from Romania. He fit just fine in the backseat during the test drive.
I pumped up the volume on the stereo, a busta rhymes jam came on, can't remember the name of it but it set the mood just right.
The steering wheel response had a very well feel of being in control. It was loose but you could feel each individual tire moving.
Our dealer also pointed out the sensors, he told us to move as close as we could to the car that was in front of us and there was a display with green lights and if you got too close, they'd turn orange. There was also one for reverse and you can see it in the rear view.
When you're driving it, you have every aspect of the road too, I couldn't find a blind spot at all.
