View Full Version : I had an interview today
It was an interview to gain a place on a PGCE. That is a course which trains you to be a teacher. I interviewed to teach Religious Education. Imagine that. Letting me loose with all those kids and religion.
Hopefully I'll hear soon.
More importantly there was this massive fat guy there also interviewing and he was really strange. Kept butting in, asking silly questions. He said he worked in IT before wanting to become a teacher but he couldn't get his Powerpoint presentation to work. What a bag of douche. Then he kept offering to get this girl a cup of water. He did a short presentation on Islam and most of it seemed to be his holiday snaps of when he went to Tunisia. Then he got down on the floor and showed us all how Muslims pray. He was really, really fat so it looked strange.
I don't think he's going to get a place.

dont take this the wrong way but what has made you want to do that?
Teaching, fair enough not easy job but i can see why but teaching about religion must be very hard as its a very emotional subject. more power to your elbow anyway. was it at crewe?

I got on the course.
Can't believe they're going to let me be a teacher. Now is probably a good time to start de-tagging some photos on Facebook.

My Religious Education teacher at school had 'boss-eyes' or 'cross-eyes' so when he was talking to you he was looking at the kid sitting next to you.
ah fun times

I think teaching religious studies is a different thing to teaching religion. In my mind, anyway. Religious studies is more a way of looking at philosophies, leaders, movements etc and how they have shaped society, rather than imparting dogma, no?

Yeah absolutely. Religious Education is not, as some people sometimes think, about forcing religion on people, Bible studies or some form of Christian evangelicalism. Personally I'm not at all religious, nominally Christian in my upbringing, but have moved away from this as I've got older.
These days it is more philosophy, looking at the histories of religion and how and why people practice religions hopefully in an attempt to inform about other ways of thinking and hopefully promote more tolerance and respect amongst children. There are also aspects to RE that are about racism, homophobia etc. All in all it's an interesting subject. As one RE teacher I shadowed for a week said (in thick scouse accent) "Kids want to know who all these Muslims are in their shopping centre, and someone needs to tell them."
Other reasons for wanting to teach it are: they pay you a higher salary to train, there is a golden hello available after your first year, there are more jobs available in RE and more chances for career progression by getting involved in other aspects of school life.
Reasons for wanting to be a teacher: I genuinely enjoy working with children, I enjoy educating myself and this is a chance to learn new things, I don't want to work stuck in an office, I have friends who are teachers and they enjoy it, I have friends in office jobs who don't. Also, lots of holidays.
This thread got me thinking, I've thought about becoming a teacher in the past but I am not academic, but I ain't a idiot. I have half a degree in which I quit because I can't see things through (as well as a few random other qualifications).
So anyway, I've just been looking at becoming a teachers assistant - you don't need any qualifications and I'll assume you get the same holidays, half the work for about half the pay - which is my sort of job.
Went off subject(ish) there; but grats rirv all the same.
How do I reach theze kidzzzzzzz?
