I wasn't sure where to start this thread because it's more a discussion topic, but photos are necessary.
I want to buy my guy a bunch of cool new clothes but I know nothing about man fashion; what brands to trust, how to tell what goes together, what conveys what kind of message, what every man needs in his closet for all occasions, etc. Help, please?
(He's not really into any one kind of style, doesn't like visible labels and brands, doesn't like odd designs on things or goofy t-shirts.)
I found some pictures of stuff I like.
Where do you shop? What do you wear? What would you like to wear? What do you think looks cool? What's hard to pull off? What looks gay?

I can't wait until I get a big check and can take my man shopping. I love seeing him in stuff that looks polished that he feels good in too (y)

Im assuming that Brooks Brothers has a more classic fit, and Banana Republic has a more trendy, fitted cut.
What about Geoffrey Beene? The Gap? What's the deal with shirt collars having buttons on them? Why are some shirt hems straight across and some shaped? Are you supposed to tuck them both in?
Where do you get the best button-up shirts?
What about cuffs on pants? Does that make the pants look more casual or more dressy? I'm thinking it makes them dressier but I don't know.

I like fitted button up shirts on a man, plaid or solid color. and a nice fitted pant. baggy can be fine too I guess, but only in a certain way. can't really find a picture of the way....kind of like justin timberlake I guess. he's normally a pretty stylish dude.
http://www.denimology.co.uk/2008/09/Jessica_Biel_and_Justin_Timberlake_in_Rome_1.jpg
can't beat t-shirts and jeans though. cardigans and blazers can be nice.
I don't know brands or anything. I don't have much to add to this after all. oop.
http://i43.tinypic.com/2zel282.jpg
I like $9 shirts. Plaid button downs too.
Nuzz, is your man that concerned about labels or any of those things you mentioned? If so, wouldn't he already have enough stuff to wear? I don't know too many people who think that hard about clothing. If I like the way something looks in a store I just pick it up and hope it fits/matches with my favorite pair of jeans. Or if it has a logo of a place I'm not a fan of I won't wear it. I think that's how a lot of guys shop.

Banana Republic can be quite overpriced, especially given their fairly generic selection, but their stuff is typically good quality. Button-down collared shirts are sometimes just referred to as oxfords, and are generally for casual dress. It works with that whole schoolboy/rolled up jeans, blazer and boat shoes look, if he's into that.
Both Geoffrey Beene and The Gap make "fitted" button-up shirts, so they're not all baggy on the sides, particularly when you tuck them in. The ones from Geoffrey Beene fit considerably better, though.
You do not want cuffs. Not until pleats and wider cut pants come back in style, at least.
Loose fitting jeans are fine, but dressier pants should fit closer to the leg. Sometimes a narrow bottom works well, depending on your build/height. If the width of the bottoms extend past the mid point between the tips of your shoes and your actual leg, they're probably too wide.
If you want to get him something he'll appreciate, a couple of Lacoste tennis shirts would be a tasteful yet timeless gift. Or perhaps a narrow tie to go with his new fitted shirt and non-pleated/non-cuffed pants.
And why's Jessica Biel carrying an empty bag?

Thank you Mickill! This is good stuff, I'm taking notes. He's definitely not into the super preppy look but I can't see him in tight jeans and scarves either. And he doesn't like obviously visible labels. He doesn't care about brands.
I want to get him a sport jacket, should I go with black or navy or khaki or what? He's got a grey pinstripe one but it's not great. What's the difference between a sport jacket and a blazer? How many buttons should there be? What should it be made of?

- henley necks
- i try to only buy clothes with good texture i dunno what its called, but i have a lot of shirts of this one type texture its kinda corduroyISH, like lines and kinda rough
- generally, i too don't like logos or advertising on my clothes
- except for the standards like lacoste or letigre... love those polos, i have every color
- i have gotten some of my best clothes at thrift stores, THE place to get blazers
- for nice clothes, i go brooks bros or calvin klein
- i buy packs of white and black calvin klein t-shirts. the cuts are excellent and make anyone look better, worth every penny - trust me on this.
- straight or boot cut jeans.
- yes banana republic can be overpriced, but yes their clothes are good quality
- i always prefer to spend a little more and get something that will last a long time over something cheap with a short life. on that note, be very careful buying sweaters, cheap ones are as good as dead after a coupla washes.
- on THAT note, i have a few sweaters that are over 20 years old and are all pilly and shit, but i still wear them out, 1/2 the time someone asks about them.
- i hate white socks. i have gotten rid of all my white cotton socks and replaced them with navy, dark green and tan socks. the only white ones i have are the ankle height ones that only go on your feet and are hidden in your shoes.
- white sneakers are for dorks.

Are there any brands that have come to be prominently adopted by the hip hop community recently? I'd like to avoid those. Usually they're the brands with the most ubiquitous logo usage, but Lacoste seems like it could be one.

Sport jackets are made with textured fabrics and usually have patterns (plaid, houndstooth etc), blazers are always solids. A navy or khaki blazer is a pretty safe bet. Two buttons. No three button anything. Try to find something with a euro/slim fit.
- i try to only buy clothes with good texture i dunno what its called, but i have a lot of shirts of this one type texture its kinda corduroyISH, like lines and kinda rough
Oh, you mean ribbed. Not a good look, man. Not a good look.
And what do you mean white sneakers are for dorks? YOU'RE for dorks.
i absolutely hate ties. i think they bring nothing to the table.
As I recall, you also don't see the problem with wearing a black belt with brown shoes.
I don't think that Lacoste has been any more prominent in the "hip hop community" now than it ever was. During the 80s a lot of these preppy european sports brands (Lacoste, Le Tigre, Le Coq, Le K-Swiss etc) were really big, but not so much now. Except with hipsters. Like, Pharrell/Kanye type hipsters, I mean.

If the chest measurement is a 42-44 would that equate to a size Large blazer, do ya think?
With women's clothes, it matters where you shop because we have catergories like juniors, misses, ladies, etc. This changes the proportion and cut of the clothes. Do men's clothes have this?
(I wish women's clothes were sized the way men's clothes are, by actual inches instead of this mysterious 0-1-2-3-4-5 nonsense. I can't just go buy a pair of jeans, I have to take at least three pairs to the fitting room with me because I never know which size this company thinks I should be)
also, more pictures of stuff you like, please?

Jackets do have a cut, and length. Cuts can be like athletic, regular, and portly. Lengths are short, medium, and long. It really depends on his build as to what size jacket he should get.
Polos are classic.

For jackets/blazers, I was thinking maybe something along these lines:
This is a tweed jacket, but silk tweed is pretty light. It can be worn casual or dressy.
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2006/09/armani-tweed-blazer.jpg
Plaid good? This one's really got a slim fit.
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2006/07/juicy-wool-blazer.jpg
These two are cotton, I believe. Definitely more casual. Probably quite comfortable. Linen is a good look for spring/summer too.
http://ii.armaniexchange.com/ArmaniExchange/images/en_US/local/products/detail/thumb/1501.10047.4303.421.jpg http://ii.armaniexchange.com/ArmaniExchange/images/en_US/local/products/detail/thumb/1501.10047.4307.421.jpg
Obviously the tight white jeans are an extremely douchey touch, but the jacket has a great cut.
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2008/04/br-monogram-blazer.jpg
Are you certain your boy really wears a 44? Anyway, yeah, that would definitely equate to a large (42 and over). I don't know about this "short, medium and long" business when it comes to jacket lengths, but they do generally come in short, regular and tall lengths. It's usually abbreviated to an S,R or T after the jacket size (i.e. 44R if he's under 6 feet in height, 44T if he's over....S if he's, I don't know, 5'4"). The differences between standard and athletic cuts (I don't know a thing about portly cuts) is the "drop". There's a more drastic drop between chest and waist measurements for an athletic cut. The drop is less severe (meaning less emphasized in the chest/tapered at the waist) with standard cuts.
Here's a tip for this summer from a fashion insider:
Boom.

NO no no no no no. For mens clothes, it makes no difference. I used to think that, then I bought a couple pair of RL jeans, and they were the worst product I've ever bought. Some things are good to buy by the label, like a RL button down, but other than that, the rest of the line is crap.
Anyway, I've never liked any clothes a person has bought for me. Unless it's a T-shirt or something. I'm very picky about my clothes. They have to feel right. Just because it looks nice, doesn't mean it'll look nice on me. I'm a big guy. 6'2, about 200lbs. I have long legs and long arms. It's not easy for people to find something for me that will fit like a glove. I also have my own style, and never look at anyone else or magazines to get style from. Style comes from your soul! Durring the week, it's all button downs, all the time. When I was in high school people called me Parker Lewis. I still get that from time to time. I wear different patterns but they're usually pretty funky with just basic cargo pants or khakis, and some light weight comfy shoes. I guess it's business casual since I never get any flack for the clothes I wear at work.
The weekends it's mostly long sleeve T-shirts and jeans with some nice Vans or Simple shoes.
I have a jacket addiction. I love jackets. Suede, leather, vynyl, gortex, whatever, I love jackets. I have probably 30 of'em that I wear regularly.
Here's an example of the shirts. It's become a signature of mine.MY hair is quite the same as well, but just so ya know, I've been doin this long before Parker Lewis came around.

The power of well-fitting pants is that they render personal shortcomings slightly less relevant.

I'll be sure to pass on your splendid advice to my friend, she is a righteous lesbian who works as a cook at remotely located oil rig camps in the far northern reaches of Canada. I can only imagine how her position in life will be heightened with the aid of your insightful words.

I think taking things much more seriously would be a good start, whatever you choose, Heiress.
Say, why did you feel it was necessary to mention her sexual orientation. Does being a lesbian make her more enriched in character?
Additionally, how did you know which one I was talking about? There were at least 3 skinny jeans in that photo.

oh please, the insinuation in your posts was more than apparent of who you were referring to, don't try and back-track now.
I made a comment on her background because I thought it was appropriate because i feel this topic had moved onto judging people by their outward appearance only.
everyone has a reason for dressing as they do and it can include a large cross section of determinants beyond personal taste such as income, career, climate and dare I say SEXUAL ORIENTATION
I dont know about you, but I have quite a few lesbian friends and their lesbianism is a huge HUGE part of their identity which they make vocally known to people very soon after their meeting them. It's just what I'm used to.
so don't go playing the gay card on me.
I am done with this conversation that is obviously going nowhere.
It is understand that half of the internet is based on people making fun of other people, I just said it was my fault for accidentally posting a picture of people that i care about and getting upset when I read comments directed at them. I thought the thread would be more entertaining if we could see real life examples of peoples head-to-toe style instead of just celebrity and high-fashion snapshots.
no matter, I regret posting the picture.
but I haven't seen you making any remorsely statements regarding your comments so obviously you still stand by them. meh.

oh wonderful.
My teasing at you for knowing who I was talking about, and for mentioning her gayness was just teasing. Because this is stupid.
I'm sorry I don't give a shit about the feelings of your oil rig friend, your feelings, or Dorothy's feelings. And I'm sorry I think skinny jeans look hideous on most women, gay or straight. That's enough remorse for me to muster up in the MAN FASHION thread. Yes, perhaps you should not post pictures of your friends if you're so worried about that kind of thing.
Anyway, PM the picture to Dorothy because she wanted to see it.
Also, were you pissed off about my asking if the mustache was the girl's father? I'm honestly not sure if that part angered you or not.
This thread sure set it off. Girls go crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man, I guess.

It's pretty clear you don't give a shit about people's feelings. you know, you've brought up in the past that you don't have a lot female friends, or friends at all for that matter, and maybe that's the problem here. instead of looking at the photo for the reasons heiress posted it, you immediately jumped to judge the appearance of each individual.
maybe if you had more personal relationships in real life, you could realize that behind every screen name is a real live person. and you could understand that maybe insulting some one's friend(s) based on appearance would be personally offensive to that person.
you just act like you think you're better than everybody, and it's not fair. we've come to the point where we all know enough about each other that comments aren't anonymous anymore. you may think you've created an air of anonymity and aloofness, but in fact, you share a lot about yourself by what you choose to withhold.
I'm just saying, it wouldn't hurt to have more respect for people's feelings.

I have a lot of stuff from J.Crew but most of it is hand-me-downs and stuff I got at Goodwill. I used to shop there every couple of months. I had an addiction. I used to dose up on cough medicine and "crew" for a weekend straight. It took some time but I'm finally able to pass by one of their stores without twitching.

Well, I thought most of you had good taste and good suggestions so I got him a RL polo and a Lacoste Polo but he hated them because of the visible logos and because he thought they were too preppy. Also, I got larges but they were way too big - Meanwhile a large shirt from the GAP was a perfect fit. Eh well. But he liked the shoes. Thanks anyway, you all! I think you had good ideas. Just not for him, I guess.
