My pick: The drumming on The Mix Up sounds like "Meg White's dad". Fuck outta here; way to show your colours you hipster hacks. Mike D is always in the groove, on the beat, and has never been a bad drummer. And on that album he's really branching beyond keeping time like he did on some of the other instros.

I guess these knobs think writing about something is like doing it. I found that particular remark really dumb. There's others, but others should play.

The Mix-Up won a Grammy in the Best Pop Instrumental category!!!(!)
Any other comments bout who's weak or bad?!!!

Christgau rated the mix-up with a dud and no explanation, just like the in sound... i'd like to know why

Probably because instrumental albums can be insanely difficult to get into unless they're on some next shit.

I actually love The Mix Up. I didn't like it at first, but the more and more I listened to it the more I appreciated it. It reminded me of an early DJ Shadow album with live instruments. And when you think about how the new album is probably going to be 90% hip hop, it was the perfect thing to drop between TT5B and the new joint.

I find it to be ok.

That's how I feel about TT5B. I loved that record when it came out, but it hasn't aged well at all. It's the lyrics, man. Way too preachy and dated with the George Bush references. It sounds silly now that Obama is prez. For me, The Mix Up replaced TT5B on my fav albums list.

In all fairness, Mike isn't quite a world class drummer. He's definitely got his flaws. Sometimes his timing does shake, and you can spot the occasional flub that made it to record here and there. But in all honesty, he's really a fun drummer to listen to. He's got really nice patterns and I just love his fills. He's creative and exciting to listen to, despite it all.

I mean, none of the bboys are highly accomplished instrumentalists, and I think they'd be the first to agree with that statement. But, as I said with the Mike thing, they're creative as shit. Their playing, while wearing it's rawness on it's sleeve, is much more entertaining to listen to because they don't rely on chops as much as they do good licks and driven grooves. Plus, they dress their shit up nicely with different textures and effects and stuff. They work and sound as a unit. They rely on each other's parts to size up their own, and in result it sounds very human and accessible.

I would say Yauch is undoubtedly the most talented as an instrumentalist, or at least he seems the most sophisticated. But once again, what they may lack in precision they completely kill in inventiveness, I mean listen to Adrock's guitar work on Ill Communication, for example. It's so unorthodox in comparison to a typical guitar player, but it sounds great and it's certainly his own style.

That's just my 2 cents though, I guess.

Back to the original topic of the thread, I remember reading something when Ch-Check It Out came out someone said something to the effect that "no one was excited to hear except the Beastie's grandmas." Loser.

they talk about their musicianship on the CYH commentary, how Mike was coming into his own on the hi-hat around the CYH era and some of the instrumental songs such as Pow and In 3's, he's really hitting his groove...

Yauch makes fun of time signatures, how most beastie boys songs are in 4/4 or maybe 3/4, but if they tried to cover a phish tune they would probably get lost in some funky time signature...

the Press is about 17 years behind the Beastie Boys regardless...

McDuff, appreciate the thoughts, but it's been done ad nauseum I think (by myself, included). Point is, Mike D doesn't drum like "Meg White's Dad".

Obviously the British press in 87 have a bit to answer for. I can't blame Adrock for getting so pissed off in that conference, dude was mad young and the press were spewing some utterly outlandish shit. His reaction was completely understandable, and probably was the catalyst for them being a notoriously absurd interview from there on out.

I agree with Mike D and Adrock not being the most polished musicians, but MCA has always impressed me with his bass playing. He really is the core of all of their instrumental music.

I remember reading somewhere back in 1989ish that they gave Yauch the "Most Improved" rapper award for Paul's Boutique. Apparently they thought he was the weak link on LTI.

Who said drumming like Meg White's Dad is a bad thing? Have you ever heard him drum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvi-dSwC3LY)?

After all isn't Screech, Mike D's brother and what's up with this family and sex tapes (http://www.liquidgeneration.com/Media/Videos/LG_Originals/Celebrity_Sex_Tapes/Meg_White_Sex_Tape_Is_Real/)?

I understand the distaste, but I recall reading that review and I'm pretty sure they weren't outright blasting Mike's drumming, but more or less pointing out the imperfections. I just think it was a bad choice of comparison (Meg White) to make his point. The writer sacrificed his validity for a weak attempt at cleverness, thus undermining what he was trying to say altogether.

All in all, I agree, bad writing. Though I think it sounds alot worse than what was intended.
