a sensible concern? sensationalist reporting? can we just saw off connecticut and drop it over montana to make up for the water displacement?

what worst in this is that they will be able to extract every bit of ressources that this warming will make accessible. Human greediness is the worst then ice melting. They already fighting about borders and dominion atm, not with arms yet...
But yea, we are fucked

^very true.
Stuff like this happens every year - yes it is happening more often and they are bigger but on both sides of the agenda there is scare stories - basically, there is this thing in the Arctic called summer.
I read a article in about November or December saying that compared to 6 months ago there is more ice and that climate change must therefore be a myth - it was winter then, and summer six months before that.
But yeah, we're fucked.
edit: I am a green at heart btw but I am also a cynic. Sometimes, in fact always I get pissed off at the press who are fore and against climate change stories as they always seem to push their own agenda rather than having a rational debate. Thus my cynical stance on the original reply

i think its a natural process, exacerbated by human activities.
the earth has been getting hotter and colder for millions and millions of years. its nothing new.
but i also feel the impact of humans on this planet cannot be denied and is also unprecedented in the 4.5 billion year history of this planet.
its difficult to say how much of an affect we are having, and how much we can reverse it if we are.
hindsight will be a wonderful teacher on this one.
we should nuke the ice caps so they don't become a problem any more.

^wow...we are talking about the melting of the ice cap and you are talking about nuking them all.... Melting of ice cap is not the major problem, like i just said earlier because, YES, earth has/will always change and have climatic cycle, the problem is the system , neoliberalism/capitalism, that will take advantages and exploit the ressources without any respect at all for the environment or the people concern by this climatic mutation.
Also,i am really concern with the USA in this issue because they dont recognize Canada sovereignty over the arctic, WE don't have a big army to defend our territories, and our soldiers are oversea fighting someone else problem,i.e.USA , instead of staying here at home and patrolling/defending/securing our land up north. Such a shame. Anyway, they will not be able to do this kind of behavior with Russia...
I hate USA rulers and ideology and you guys show the mentality i dislike in your leaders. Like the world is yours... FUCK you bunch of retarded brainlessworms imperial numbskulls. :É
You are the only country who did nuked another country, and this twice... Are you proud of this or what?
Maybe you were only joking... you should revised your sense of humour then...
AS for reversing the cycle, the only way possible to maybe smooth things out is to change the premisse of this globalization and this run for supremacy. This will not happen any time soon.
WE are fucked.

Society is getting better with dealing with global warming, not to say it's perfect or will it ever be but it's getting better. The word green has never been more prevalent in our lives. I do think global warming is a bit of both natural and human made and it's up to us to do our part. But it will never be perfect in our society.

very true. yet at the same time where is the tipping point? have we hit it, are will close to it, when will it happen?
additionally, everyone wants to live like first worlders. look at the amount of people living like that right now;a small amount in relation to world population; all the garbage and energy we produce and waste. think if china and india get there soon(within 50 years), thats billions more people producing tons more waste and using assloads more energy.
not to mention the taxation of natural resources that all of that will require.
granted we have technology as a magical savior, but can that really fix all of our problems? is that a realistic way of looking at things? how many people can this planet really sustain?

thats kind of the big problem. no matter how fast we become green, the rest of the world will be shitting all over the environment for at least another 50 years before they come along

granted we have technology as a magical savior, but can that really fix all of our problems? is that a realistic way of looking at things? how many people can this planet really sustain?
I think so,technology could help us a lot but it would mean to change the fondation of our society, i.e the way we see and think about humanity, evolution and our planet. So that mean redesigning lots and lots of things, lots of works and lots of cost at first. Multinational just want quick profit , they dont look at long term benefices and they dont really want things to change anyway. So THEY should reprogram their brain in order to make substancial changes. Because they are the ones with the financial tools, they are basically running the system taking decision that affect us all.
As for how many people this planet can sustain, lots. The problem is ressources distributions. If every country would be self-sufficient(utopically speaking) well, they could take care of their own people. Now, with this globalization and the IMF and the WB and their global finacial system that just extend the gap between the rich and poor; The structural adjustements program is one of the worst things that happen in our centuries. It is a system that steal ressources of some countries while making them poorer and poorer, taking up their land for them to grow our soya, sugar, coffee, rice and so on... monoculture crop are devasting their economic balance, their food supply as well as their social system( they have to repay tremendous debts)
Another solution beside a self-sufficient system would be a reverse evolution to a point where we had horses ; moyen age but without the fucking religion tho, just before industrialization...
I say this to all climate change accepters but are of the view 'oh its china who pollute the most' or 'its USA with their stupidly large cars who are at fault, not me'
Its not the big things - its the little thing we all can do that can help. Not matter how small, it'll all help no matter how small the drop in the ocean is.
One thing I don't find acceptable with people who preach green at me is if they eat meat and then criticise me for enjoying my car or motorbike. I mean seriously, how can meat be justified when so many are starving and it takes so much more energy and land to produce?
