i know a librarian with a budget to buy cd's for her libererry.. its mostly for the young adults, early teens kids. she asked me for some suggestions
i suggested the beatles but then i drew a blank because i dont know what she could buy thats 1) good, 2) instructive in some way, 3) something that parents wouldnt complain about. something to culture the kids a bit, stuff that they will be curious about, stuff that will blow some minds
there are a lot of poor kids that go there, so i thought maybe get some good classic hip hop, but im not sure what to suggest.
anyone wanna do a little community service and suggest something with a little explanation?

the song is called 'why does the sun shine' and it is by tom glazer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0RohMxyX5k). respect.
any of the tom glazer singing science records are good. you can download
them all for free here (http://www.acme.com/jef/singing_science/) but they are pretty dated. i don't think kids today
would like them. even the tmbg version doesn't really appeal to most little
kids i know, but they do have several kids albums that are good.
libraries should always be well stocked with all types of classical, jazz and thin lizzy's 'jailbreak'
'escape' by whodini has 'friends' on it. that's a song with a positive message.

thanks you 2, :P
doesnt have only to be literally learn from the lyrics, but learn from generally. learn about new music. so the whoodini escape album, yeah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4NkyWXfofM
i think they might be curious about a whoodini album and check that out
edit: it can have profanity on it, but not overly vulgar
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing

Yeah, most of the best music was either written under the influence of drugs, is about drugs or contains sinister backwards messages that reference drugs.

Anything Peter Paul & Mary
Willie Nelson's "Rainbow Connection" album
Classical music is great for kids and is scientifically proven to improve concentration. Can't go wrong with Mozart.
...Uh...I'll think of more.

Louie Armstrong
Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" (the whole album, not just the song)
OK Computer
Simon and Garfunkel, particularly the song "At the Zoo"
In terms of hip hop, A Tribe Called Quest is pretty good for the chillins as the language isn't too offensive, relatively speaking
Johnny Cash "At Folsom Prison"
Oh, and the song "Tip Drill" by Nelly.

Simon Says by Monch. You gotta understand, he doesn't mean the "Girlies, rub on your titties" part, because he never said 'Simon Says'. If it was a good lesson for me to learn when I was 18, it's good enough for the weens.

I was going to suggest them as well (y)
kids don't need to be poor to enjoy good ol' school hip hop
But if you're looking from something a bit more urban how about Children's Story from Slick Rick, Parent's Just don't Understand from Dj Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and Bob Marley Three little Birds. Might I suggest some Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Tracey Chapman, Arethra Franklin, and Ray Charles as well

for sure they dont need to be poor to enjoy hip hop.. from the way they dress and from what she hears coming out of their headphones, that seems to be what they're into...
i mentioned this so that peeps could keep the audience in mind when choosing what they will be likely to have their interested sparked by. i don't see them picking up a the rolling stones, but who knows... there already is some rs and beatles there
i've sent most of these suggestions so far on..
