There's a nice 2-part retrospect of the making of De La Soul's seminal "3 Feet High and Rising" at hiphop.com. It's comprised of interviews with Posdnous and Trugoy (of De La, of course), Prince Paul (producer), Afrika Baby Bam (of Jungle Bros.), Kool Keith, a few others, and the Beasties. And what do you know, it's by none other than Angus Batey (he wrote an excellent book of beastie history, but I can't remember the title right now). It's a two part piece, and the b boys show up at the very end of the second installment. I do reccomend reading it all if you're a fan of 3 feet though, there's some tasty stories. Good day.

thanks, took a long time to read haha.. one of the albums that stays with me, like a defining moment in life! i knew both PB and 3 Feet were both built around multiple layers of sampling, but MCA called it when he said the 2 albums don't sound alike..i agree.. multi layered sampling, but very different.. hip hop music was changing, and these albums definately stood out, and still stand out, because it's so easy for people to hear them as new, all over again, unlike alot of hip hop before it that could be easily dismissed as old, like Mike D said about how 'hard' beats were trying to sound

Its ironic how Paul was the main producer of the (really) only Beastie diss record in history, The Cactus Album. I always thought it was funny how 3rd Bass disses the Beasties but at the same time they sample them on the albums best track, Steppin to the AM. Just goes to show you how forced and convoluted that whole white boy "rap war" was.

On topic though, 3 Feet High and Rising is an incredible, incredible album. I don't think its as good as Paul's Boutique, but what is, really?
