Yes! Great program.
Yes but it doesn't work with linux so its just annoying for everyday computing cus you can't use it
But it is the future of music imho. And stuff like that - well I said that about last.fm also and that didn't become as popular as it should of.

I got it quite a while ago, but haven't been using it much.
First I just listened to the Alternative channel, but got bored with the random tracks they chose.
Then was looking for some Only Ones to listen to before the gig (as I don't have my vinyl player connected at the mo),
but there was only one, and not particularly my favourit either.
Listen to Last FM these days, even tho they keep playing same tracks over and over
(like, Kate Bush has done about a dozen albums and the only one that keeps coming up is Army Dreamers....).

I havn't tried the radio part yet. I just love digging up my old classics i've got on vinyl somewhere, but can't play at the mo', coz no turntable(n)
This is a brilliant service, and it should be available worldwide. Everyone should give this program a try; it is indeed addicting.
i like it. it's the smartest service out there for the music industry. unlike itunes and other similar software/technologies i feel like this is the way to go for both the music industry and the consumers. i know the guy who founded it and he's super rich so it's obviously going well on their side and they're constantly working on new deals with major artists.

I made loads of Spotify-playlists for my birthday party (arrival > during meal > between bands > PAAAAAARTYYY!!!!)
One guy wanted to be a DJ at my party, but I didn't have a chance to get any DJ gear (getting the gear for the bands was enough), but he used my Spotify-lists, and commented on Facebook later he was only gonna use the green thing from now on when DJ'ing.

Yeah well, unsurprisingly given my constant displays of technical stupidity on this site, i don't really know what i'm doing much. It's all trial n error. Will add everyone to my peoples when i'm next on spotify and see what the deal is. I have considered doing the paying thing so i can get it on my phone but then i figured it may depend on internet connections when i'm out n about and it could just be infuriatingly unreliable.

Signed up for Spotify (free version) on Saturday and have been listening ever since. VERY cool system. Sure there's some commercial interruptions but compared to what I'm getting I have problem them at all.
Got to finally listen to some people I've been thinking of getting into - e.g. Chemical Brothers, Tangerine Dream and some classic country artists from the 60s - and before I signed up, I was going to do that either by buying used CDs or vinyl (can't afford new CDs/vinyl and don't download unless the artist gives his approval) but couldn't really afford to do that. Already have a small list sitting on my desk of albums I am now going to buy. Plus Spotify sounds quite good with my groovy new 2001 Space Odyssey-esque :D PC speakers (http://www.usa.philips.com/c/pc-audio/spa7210_17/prd/en/)).Fun times ahead......

August 01, 2001: "Spotify Caught Using Evil Tracking Cookie..." (http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/stories/080111spotify)
According to research just published by researchers at UC Berkeley, Spotify has been using a cookie that cannot be deleted, still tracks if the user blocks cookies, and even operates in browser stealth mode. In fact, if you try to delete this thing, the cookie dynamically regenerates.........
Three days later: "Spotify Now Getting Sued Over Evil Tracking Cookie... " (http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/stories/080411spotifysued) (y)
I realized the free version I am using had commercial breaks - they have to pay for that music somehow - but the past couple days they have become MUCH more frequent, approximately every two tracks or so. Very irritating. Not sure if I'm going to keep it now.

Well I got over the evil-ness I guess :) and again used Spotify to check out music I have only heard/read about. Like:
Lemon Jelly - jangly happy music, the audio equivalent of a box of Cracker Jacks or a pb&j :) Great for long drives or sitting at home just relaxing. From their Lost Horizons album, two favorites:
"Space Walk" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVCB3qpplLk) with spoken word samples by Ed White, American astronaut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Higgins_White)
"Closer" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R9D_1958Mw&feature=related)
Tangerine Dream - electronic instrumental music from the 70s (they're still around though). And you thought Pink Floyd was trippy and a bit spooky. Do a search for "Rubycon Part I" and "Rubycon Part II" to see what I mean. AWESOME headphone music. Each track, which change quite as bit as they progress, is @17 minutes long so don't be in a hurry!
X (the L.A. punk band)
The Germs
...and a bunch more.
Spotify sounds pretty good via my PC speakers but I read somewhere if you sign up for the paid version, supposedly the streaming rate is increased and the sound improves, though if listened to through the speakers that come with most computers, and especially laptops, unfortunately I highly doubt you'll hear the improvement. Yea they're "huge" but I believe a decent component stereo system costing as little as $300 can really make listening to music much more enjoyable (IMO don't listen to Bose advertising - in my and many other audio hobbyists' opinions their stuff, while it sounds decent, is incredibly overpriced, though their "301" and "201" series conventional speakers are sanely priced).

I've been using spotify for a long time now, I pay for it as well. Couldn't imagine not having it! I've got over 4000 tracks saved on it and there is loads of stuff which is really hard to find and also things I'd never had discovered.
Don't know about this weird 'tracking' cookie, what's it really going? Spying on me getting out of the shower, yeah whatever.

08-30-2011, 09:20 AM
I'm considering paying for it so i can get it on my phone. Seems a good way of getting almost limitless music on there for not much cash which is essential to my sanity. Up until now i had free unlimited downloads from nokia with my phone contract but that's just finished and the thought of having to pay for my music habit was giving me the heebie jeebies.

Don't know about this weird 'tracking' cookie, what's it really going? Spying on me getting out of the shower, yeah whatever. The use of tracking cookies is an extremely common method - IIRC they are text-based and not actual pieces of software - for carrying out useful tasks for a website and don't normally cause anyone problems. Spotify's is probably just there to keep track of something relatively innocuous like say, how many times you activated the Spotify program on your computer, program crashes, if the Spotify program lost contact with its server etc.
What bothers me and others is that you cannot delete it permanently from your computer because it re-loads itself.....which AFAIK is NOT common and to me is a bit on the (subtly) shady side. Basically a company is telling you we don't own your computer but we're gonna attach software to it anyway, no matter what you say.
I'm considering paying for it so i can get it on my phone. If I was still employed I would go for the pay version myself, but for home use instead. I don't own a smartphone  so while driving it's my MP3 player and the occasional CD. For home use I want to use this media streamer (http://www.revo.co.uk/digital-radio/revo-mondo-wifi.php) (no computer needed, just a broadband connection) but am not sure if it will work with Spotify.
jabumbo
08-31-2011, 12:21 PM
the only thing i wish i could do is just open it up and hit play. i guess i could do this at home with my library on the computer, but its mostly used at work where i am just feeding off of other peoples' playlists and random albums i search for and they happen to have.
guess i could pay for it though, so i can't really complain
FunkyHiFi

Well I found Spotify very useful for checking out bands/musicians I have been curious about and now feel comfortable about buying their albums. And didn't really mind the commercials sicne I knew they had to pay the bills somehow since I was on the freebie subscription plan. And the 160kbps streaming rate allowed the music to sound quite good, for a non-CD source.
But then they changed their sign-up plan for new listeners: if you were NOT a member of Facebook, too bad, you can't subscribe. And to make that even more unpleasant, if you were a member of Facebook, unless you clicked the right option in Spotify, whatever you were listening to showed up in your friends' Facebook accounts. Screw that.
Bye bye Spotify. Nice idea but got screwed up along the way, I guess because of plain ol' greed and this obsession with making everything "social". I uninstalled it yesterday. Well I still have Pandora and all the non-subscription internet stations I've listened to for years now.........
