People of Chi-Town -

Me and some buddies just booked a trip to Chicago from AUg 11 - 13. We are there to watch the Phillies kick the Cubs ass. We are staying at a Westin on Michigan Ave.

Question -

Can you give me some other cool spots to hit up to see, drink at and eat at.

Thanks.

I'm planning a road trip over 4 weeks. But its over 3000 miles in total which I'm not sure I'm leaving a little too much to do for what I want to be a slow pace.

Go to Ian's Pizza... they serve stuff like pizza with macaroni & cheese on it and a bunch of other deliciously evil flavor combinations.

3463 N Clark St.
(773) 525-4580

I'll also back up Ed DeBevic's. It's tourist-y, but I always enjoy myself there. It's themed like a '50s diner and the servers there put on an act where they're somewhat rude... but not enough to make you leave. It sounds odd to want to be treated rudely... but it's part of the fun. Like I said, tourist-y.

640 N Wells St.
(312) 664-1707

I also enjoy the Billy Goat Tavern. To me it;s like a legit time-machine to an old school Chicago. Food is pretty decent and very basic - in a good way. Servers here have a good attitude and are pretty awesome in a genuine sort of way. I also guess there was some SNL skit about this place... I can't recall ever seeing it though. I like it here though.

430 N Michigan Ave.
(312) 222-1525

Just a couple suggestions... hope you like 'em (if you check any of them out)!

Before and after the games you'll be fine right on Clark St. You can walk south from the park and hit just about any type of place to eat. Same for the bars. There's quite a variety. You have to drink a beer at Murphy's and Cubby Bear for old time sakes, and it's a good time at any of the bars on the north side of Addison for baseball fans. They'll be very crowded. A friend of mine has a place called RawBar right next to Metro. He has the best crawfish soup you'll ever eat anywhere. You can get a bowl of that, some bread, and a beer for like 7$ right at the bar.

Around your Hotel, there's mad shopping for anything you want, and there's a lot of hotel type places to eat and drink. Most of them are very pricey. Not too far from your place (walking distance) is Rush and Division. There's always a party going on there (a bit touristy).

Wicker Park is where you want to cab it to. Lots-O-Fun. Party all night with some good fun people.

You'll have a good time.

Randomly here and there. When I lived in Grand Rapids, MI (and I may be moving back over there...) it wasn't uncommon to just up and decide to drive down/over for a day. It's about equidistant to Detroit, so we figured we'd go to the cooler of the two cities.

I've also been several times as a kid on family trips. It's a fun city that is within driving distance, so why not, eh?

Clarke's on Belmont. Delicious breakfast num nums in a cool neighborhood.

Golden Nugget. 24-hour divey restaurant with the best potato pancakes I've ever had in my life.

Gene & Jude's. Best hot dogs in the Chicagoland area, if you ask me. Not in Chicago proper, in River Grove pretty close to O'Hare. Worth the trip.

Billy Goat Tavern/Grill. BEST CHEESBURGERS IN THE WORLD. I mean that with all seriousness. Also a piece of touristy Chicago history, which natives may consider annoying. I think it's a fun place to go.

There's a fucking amazing Mexican restaurant in Des Plaines, also relatively close to O'Hare, called El Mexico. To this day, I have never tasted a more heavenly enchilada.

Also, eat Lou Malnati's pizza. Others may tell you to go for Giordano's or Uno's/Due's. Don't listen.

And here - canna recall the name of the hole in the wall i went to after seeing the cubbies win the last game of the season on fan appreciation night.
but these at least give you the flavor - what am getting at is that it is a good crustacean city:

Here are two old threads on Chicago shrimp shacks. The first one is from 2001 and the second one (linked below) is from last Spring. In both, I think that you get a sense of amazement at the rediscovery of a long-forgotten aspect of our foodways. From these pioneering discussions, I think it is apparent that these fish/shrimp shacks (specially those located right on the Chicago River) are an important but totally unknown and neglected part of Chicago eating and food culture.

Golden Nugget is the same as the five or six other Golden Empire spots to eat around town. They are good.

Gene & Jude's is good, but far. A good hot dog can be found just about anywhere you see a Vienna sign in the window. Weiners Circle is on your way from the hotel to the game. It's on Clark, like 2600. Been there forever. Good stuff.

BillyGoat ahas gotten bad. It was good (when I was 8) but sad to say, it's no longer the burger it used to be. The best burger in town now belongs to KumasCorner. It's the best, seriously, the best.2900 W Belmont.

Good Mexican can be found all over Chicagoland. Arturos on Western Ave is my current fav.

Lou does have some good pie. The best pizza places are in the burbs, as Lou's is. Due is good though! The best pizza in the city (as far as I'm concerned) is MyPie. On Clark and Fullerton. They have a salad bar too. Pizza, salad bar, and a pitcher of beer is very cheap, and very good.

I'm starving now!

Skylark on Halsted has great food, and good people too. FYI

Bleachers have turned into a college drunk fest. There's not as many real baseball fans as there used to be in those seats. Now I'm sure Beastiegirrl watches all of the game and rarely misses a beat, but for the most part, the true bleacher bum has left long ago. It's also roasting hot in August. There's really not a bad seat in the park anyway. I can get ya rooftop for a game if interested. Usually 125$ will get ya all you can eat and drink. Good selection of drink, and some very good food. Indoor bar and plasma tvs as well. Fairly cheap for a great place to watch a game.

Dorothy Wood
04-24-2009, 12:46 AM
echewta, I thought you liked olde tymey things. white sox is an olde tymey thing. like soda fountains and trolleys and the jitterbug.

totally awesome:

No one can tell me what exactly a Red Wing is, or why the symbol for the Detroit Red Wings is a tire with wings. Does this creature even exist in the wild?
- Pamela, Forest Hills, NY

Good guess, Pamela. The team is named for the Michigan warbling red wing, a bird known for its distinctive spoked wheels and common to the subdivisions of Detroit.
Just kidding. The winged wheel logo was actually borrowed from a cycling club in Montreal. Here's how it happened.
Detroit was awarded an NHL franchise in 1926, and the owners stocked their team by purchasing the roster of the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League. The team was known as the Detroit Cougars for a couple of years, then the Falcons. They did not win often under either name.
In 1932, a millionaire named James Norris bought the team. Here's the rest of the story, as told by Bob Duff in his Detroit Red Wings article in Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League:
"Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, a sporting club with cycling roots. The MAAA's teams were known by their club emblem and these Winged Wheelers were the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a version of their logo was perfect for a team playing in the Motor City and on October 5, 1932 the club was renamed the Red Wings."

Coincidence or not, the new name and logo marked a turnaround in the team's fortunes. The Detroit Red Wings made the playoffs in their first season, and won their first Stanley Cup in 1936.

I loved MyPie. I used to spend Saturday afternoons there with my daughter watching her make a mess of the food (she was two). I walked by there last summer and noticed they had closed their doors. It was kind of like a kick in the stomach.

I was exaggerating, Dip.

Relax. Breath. It's gonna be alright. Wanna talk about it?

It was a joke, sort of. I do remember leaving a Sox game once and hearing gun shots ringing in the neighboring blocks. But you can get that anywhere in the city. There is nothing wrong with Bridgeport. In fact, I used to hang out in a bar called The Show right on the corner of 35th and Halsted before they tore it down.

Now, if you cross the Dan Ryan you will definitely be in for an interesting evening!!

FACT: Last baseball game related shooting occurred in front of the Cubby Bear outside Wrigley. I'm sure there are many more arrests outside Wrigley because of the high ass-clown cub fan to human ratio.

It's not the fans, it's the residents. The residents near Addison are (for the most part) artsy fartsy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-)

Anyway, have a great trip Mantis! Let me know if you need anything.

I realize you were just joking, but even still, it's that kind of banter (from Sox fans AND Cubs fans alike) that will cause Comiskey to maintain its bad reputation. It's even less forgivable for a Sox fan to encourage people to be fearful of that neighborhood. Knock that shit off, son!

Just lookin out for the peeps yo!

Not saying don't go there you'll get shot. Just sayin Wrigley is a better park. I think any real baseball fan (not that I am one) would say the same after the old Comiskey was knocked down, along with most of the after game fun. The place isn't the same at all.

I go all the time though. I just don't roam the streets after a game like I used to.

Real baseball fans (and I am one) enjoy the company of other real baseball fans, the ratio of which is minimal at Wrigley. Also, the food there sucks and the whole place smells like piss. I don't believe the hype. Never have, never will.

I will say I am more a ChiSox fan over a Cubs fan. 2 reasons...Jim Thome, former Philly amd one of the classiest acts in baseball and (2) Im a big fan historian of the game and a good majority of the "Black Sox" got screwed. Shoeless Joe and Buck Weaver played out of their minds in that series.

I am pleased you will be favoring the Cubs' opponent. I like the Phillies. And I like Philly. (y)

wait...by "artsy fartsy", do you mean....gay?

some facts for out-of-towners:

wrigleyville is located within the neighborhood called Lakeview. Lakeview also contains "boystown", which is like a two mile strip of Halsted and gay as the day is long. the neighborhood also has a long history of being an area where "punks" hang out. along belmont at least. but it's basically where teenagers in tight black pants from the suburbs come to hang out and shop these days.

honestly, it's too expensive for actual "arty" people to live there, but there is an abundance of affordable studio apartments, so sometimes young people and a whole heck of a lot of transplants live there.

however, the area is very yuppie as a whole.

anyway, it's definitely an interesting area. parking is hell, but there's a lot to do and there's a lot of weirdos walking around mixed in with wives who don't have to work and shop all day. I spend 40 hours a week in that neighborhood and my hate to love ratio is at about 30/70.

Your best chance of getting spanked will be at a Cubs game.

Wrigley is a dump.

My big Cub fan friends at work go to the Brewers park to avoid Wrigley at all costs. One of them said he will never go to Wrigley again.

I took the boy to the Sox game yesterday. The fundamental section in left field is great for kids; batting cages, fast pitch, race pods, throw out the runner, etc.

Cool photos. Urinal diving slightly disturbing. I hope his mouth was closed. I can't wait to get out there. All the advice is much appreciated.
