it might pass, but right now im feeling that this may be some of the best work the beasties have done. super ill rapping, sick instrumentation & nice use of scratching as keyboards hehe. it seems like more of a punk song with rapping then a hip hop song with punk music.

Thanks for putting these up; they are both awesome.
After listening closely a few times I would almost bet money that they are new; mostly because of MCA and Mike. MCA's voice, even distorted a bit, sounds more like he sounds now or like he sounded on TT5B's. And Mike is just all over the place, which is a good thing, but his delivery also sounds more TT5B than CYH. That plus some of the content in the ryhmes themselves; I would almost bet these are new, which makes me as excited about this album as I was before IC dropped.
Final note....if they are new, they will not be included on the new album; ok maybe a final complete version of BBoys in the Cut but I don't think LMCA will. That's just how they roll.......

I guess aglio e olio was a rap EP then, cause it's pretty much the same as that stuff to my ears. Only all 3 MCs are "rapping."
Exactly! The same way Root Down is a hardcore song!
But seriously, I see your point. Note that I didn't call it a rap song, I just hear them use their rapping conventions. Aglio had no references to 'the beat', 'the rhyme' or 'the dj'. Doubtful that it's worth a debate though, because it's not cut and dry. That blurring is what I like about it. Heaps. Why not mash them together? We Got The would have worked a shitload better as a hardcore track.
If people doubt that it will be on Tadlock's at all, does that mean they will be disappointed if it is? I'm so far the other direction I just assumed this would be the lead single. Would that disappoint? I see some lukewarm support along the lines of "I dig it (as long as it's not going any further than this)".
I agree with the people who think it's clever etc etc. I was really puzzled by it, and now I can't stop listening to it. After years and years of sifting through Beastie minutiae, I couldn't imagine a better direction to go in.

I grew up punk/hardcore, but always liked the Beasties Punk and Hip-Hop, so if this is the direction they want to go, I'm all for it, taking it full circle so to speak, Punk-->Hip-Hop-->Punk-Hop I'm diggin' it.
The comments we've heard from the Boys about the new album having lots of short songs could be a clue as to the "Punkness" of this album, as punk songs tend to be rather short.

Lee Majors Come Again is one of the best Beastie Boys songs ever recorded. i don't mean to diss but I don't understand how some people can't figure out if this is new or not. I know it's been discussed and proven it's new, but this song is so fresh and groundbreaking it shouldn't even be debated. There is no other song like this in music recording history, and for many reasons, whether you think they are rapping or singing. If you think they are singing, this is the first hardcore song with 3 singers. If you say they are rapping, this is the first hardcore song with rapping in it. Another reason that there is no way they could have recorded this years ago: this song is a culmination of the styles the band has been mastering and creating throughout their whole career. the singing/rapping is perfect, and the music is perfect, and they go together perfectly, with rapping/singing and the singing in the chorus, flowing seemlessly.
If everyone's debating what king of song it is, it's because the Beastie Boys have just invented yet another kind of genre defying music. If people think it sounds like just another hardcore record that's ok but i hope they listen again. i really hope this makes it onto the album or at least they have other songs like it, but to be honest, with all of the work that must have been put into this it's hard to believe they have similar tracks, then again its the Beastie Boys!!! No wonder they are my favorite band. And one more thing, if it does make it onto the album, i hope they can play it live. What i mean by this is i think it would be impossible to play live unless they get friends to play instruments for them.. the song is so tight! my dream is it takes over sabotage for the encores.. that would be so fun, see you in the pit :p
P.S. i wanted to mention how awesome the chorus was, and that i've listened to the song so many times, and it's still getting me hyped :)

Good point on the "dj/rhyme/beat" references. I started thinking about that too as I listened to it a few more times.
I won't be disappointed if it's on Tadlock's. It just seems kinda "demoish." If it's polished a bit here and there it could end up on there. Now, I would be shocked if it's the lead single though.

I totally agree with your last paragraph as well. Good post, homey.(y)
I think the quality of the recording is a result of the fact that it was ripped from vinyl. Yeah, the bass drum is pretty quiet and the vocals seem a little loud, but I think its just because it was ripped... from vinyl. I'm sure if it ends up on the new disc it will sound more full and rich.
My first DFL 7" sounded the same way when I converted it to tape. Back when people used tapes.

"If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain." Do you know which 'philosopher' said that? Dolly Parton! And people say she's just a big pair of tits. - David Brent
I like the song, creatively it shows that they are thinking outside of the box again...but I still don't like the sound of the voices. I had the same problem with tt5b. I don't know anything about mics, booths and recording so I can't say what exactly but it just doesn't sound as nice as previous efforts to me.

It could be a combination of the turntable/stylus/pre-amp/soundcard/compression. If there is a weak link in the chain its going to hurt the sound quality.
Trust me though, if you have a good turntable, needle, preamp and soundcard the vinyl will sound really good, if not better than the digital file. There's also the fact that converting to MP3 destroys the sound quality. MP3s really color the way music sounds, especially if they aren't done right. That's why they're releasing the albums in FLAC and Apple Lossless.
It could also be that they were looking for a raw sound because its a hardcore song.

So I just heard the new track this morning. What a good start to the day.
I recently [6 days ago] got the funding pulled from my main freelance gig, so I've been trolling craigslist like crazy. Some people in Boston are looking for a stereogum.com look to their new music website. Figured I'd look @ stereo gum and see if I could do "that" for them. BAM. New Beastie Boys song.
My girlfriend called, and I said to her "I got great News!" a*hem. She assumed I had found some work. For whatever reason a good new Beastie Boys song didn't seem as exciting to her as me having a steady flow of cash. Oh well. It made my fucking day.

MCA says 'bitch' in B Boys in the Cut.
Probably one of the very few times the word has been said in a Beastie Boys song!
I remember years ago when Ch-Check It out came out and everyone was kicking off cause they thought MCA said 'hitting with my bitches' instead of pincers.

i think the pitch vs. bitch debate is very interesting. considering their take on Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up". words, their meaning, people's attitudes towards them (and in this particular case, the boys' attitudes) do evolve. this one's particularly interesting to me because i've been having this debate at my school with colleagues who are old-school, hardline feminists who find no good use for the b-word. as Yauch said of the word "fuck", the f-word will be de rigeur in a few years.

I wasn't saying that "records" sound bad. I think vinyl sounds better than any CD. I was saying that the fact it was RIPPED from vinyl is probably what hurt the sound quality. Like something was lost in the transfer.

I don't think its the word in particular that bothered them about the prodigy song, but the use of it. The song's name alludes to domestic abuse, and in way that can be offensive to some. So long as "bitch" isn't being used in reference to a woman, I don't see any reason why the word would be taboo in the beastie vocab.

That is a possibility; I've heard some pretty shabby record rips. Another thing that makes me wonder, why would the bboys spend the money to stamp up a bunch of records of a song that wasn't properly mixed? The Mario treatment could do wonders to this promising track.

that's a good point. although they've never used it in any of its other senses until now. in the conversations i've had, the term is off the table in all of its senses because of its historical/political meaning for women. so it's interesting to me that it shows up at all in a new Bboy cut.

Okay,
My wife would not be happy if I said, "I'm out of here, bitch."
But, she wouldn't care if I said, "I'm out this bitch."
In the first sentence, it's describing her. In the 2nd, it's describing the place we are/were at. That's how Yauch used it. A "noun" refering to a place, not a person.

I have a hard time believing that. I really can't decipher the chorus and as was said earlier in this thread, it seems like Yauch's mic is lower than Mike's or Adam's. Then again, I remember playing Flute Loop in the car once and my passenger saying, "this beat is dope, but I can't understand a word they're saying." So, I guess it's possible they want it like that.
Either way, the track has grown on me big time.

Assuming it's on the album, and assuming the album is out in the northern fall, the song could do with sounding a little different by that time.
Bringing up the drums even a little too much would ruin the whole '81 vibe it has going on, though. I think the album is going to be a weird timeline of their sound and that it's very intentional on Lee Majors. Mario would put space between the instruments, I think Yauch was behind its sounding more like a unit moving together.
That said, the guitar feedback could be bought forward a bit, to be a tad more obnoxious and atonal. And also, the vocal still sounds like it could have been a TT5B acapella mashed with new music, with that o-scope mic sound (which is really minor because the song is dope anyway). Aside from the chorus, which is just perfect.
He shouts out one Jose Nemes (Neves??? I'm in the Southern Hemisphere, I'm allowed to not know). Your'e really going to think I've lost it with this, but they all refer to shit I've seen in Beastie-Free which is weird; Von Dutch and Ugg Boots (The girls about 3 years ago), The Roller Rink down in Virginia (The lovely AceFace), and like a Mormon I'm on a mission (Auton, even a point I raised about my Mormon friend who knew elders that snowboarded with MCA). Coincidence, almost definitely. But it resonated.
That's my two cents. Nice to see some discussion up inside this pitch. (y)

A few thoughts/possibilities:
1) A sloppy, casual, rough mix of Lee Majors can just as likely be a nod to the punk rock aesthetic that the song seems to exude.
2) According to TMU liners, it was engineered by the Beastie Boys and Jon Weiner. Note that the bboys were listed first. Perhaps they've taken on full responsibility of engineering duties this time around. And maybe they're just not all that, well, skilled in that field.
3) Maybe the idea to toss these special 7" nuggets in the CYH packages came at the last minute and they simply didn't have enough time to mix the song down before the packages were assembled.
4) Or, Lee Majors is just a complete throwaway to them, not even worth spending the time to mix down in their eyes. They could just be tossing us "scraps", in the truest sense of the word.

I think Lee Majors is a really cool little track. I have no problem with the sound quality, it's obviously not perfect and, if released properly, I'd imagine it'd sound a bit better. But I think it's meant to sound pretty lo-fi, it's hardcore for fucks sake.
They should have saved it and put it out as the first single. But I'm not complaining, just awaiting the next 7" with the IC deluxe vinyl.
Btw, KP - i thought your point about O-Scope vocals was interesting. Isn't it just that effect they used on AOLTNYC and IAWGM? I love the former, hate the vocal recording on the latter. But to me the likes of RTRW and C-CIO have vocals that sound sharp and crystal clear, and fucking way better than the vocal mix on Hello Nasty.

Both WGT and Bad Brains 'Let There Be Angels (Just Like You)' tracks are 122.XX BPM that why I picked the later.
Guess it didn't sound '2 Legit 2 Quit' to ya! But it was fun for me and I'm done messing with it!
i like the accappella more. i can see the point in keeping the sound quality of Lee Major crappy in due respect to the ethics of hardcore punk........but bring the vocals up a bit more. i just can't pay attention to the lyrics; i keep getting distracted by the "beat"?
i've got mixed feelings about this new album especially if it's gonna be different mixes of sounds and styles.
i'd love to see them write more rhymes in their respective verses. they can write some good shit. why not add 3 more lines? TT5B, to me, was like "BAM! here's a rhyme... now you go, adam/mca/mike".

To me, B-Boys in the cut sounds like a left-over from TT5B, or at least something done between TT5B and TMU. Just like Alive and In A World Gone Mad felt like hybrid between HN and TT5B styles.
Could this is likely the beat -- at least the end, for B-boys in the cut? Or is it a cut from an over artist that MMM is playing?

But to me the likes of RTRW and C-CIO have vocals that sound sharp and crystal clear, and fucking way better than the vocal mix on Hello Nasty.
Funny you should say that, because Mario mentioned in that RedBull lecture that he used Sennheiser 421s as the vocal mics on Hello Nasty, which was a surprising choice considering they are relatively cheap, dynamic mics.
It's quite obvious (and if I remember seeing the setup myself in a TT5B era studio tour) they were using much more expensive mics for TT5B. But while the style of beats they were rapping over on TT5B more or less demanded nice, clean vocal tones, the vocals on Hello Nasty, I think, matched nicely with the lo-fi-ness of the record. Plus, those vocal sounds were far more reminiscent of their "sound" than those of TT5B.
I wouldn't expect to hear that cleanness again unless they went the heavily synthetic route again beatwise. Who knows though. No one ever does. Personally, I like not being able to decipher their vocals at times. I've grown to embrace it as part of their steez. I mean shit, the majority of Ill Communication might as well be in another language, in my opinion. But I love it all the same.

The issue I had in the past with not liking Hello Nasty probably has more to do with it being a dark time in my life, and that album not being what I wanted at that point. That and the mix up are the only Beastie Boys albums I listen to now, because I'm bored of the rest at present. 'Why not cure that with my two least listened albums?' I thought.
I think people need to get off the 'vocal mix' topic because it's clear that not one of us really knows what we're talking about, and it sounds quite precious when you read through it all (myself included).

- This is pretty much how I'm feeling about Lee Majors.
I'm kind of surprised how much scrutiny and analysis of the sound engineering is going on here. When I record I like to capture the feel and energy of the track just how I want them, if that means keeping the mix raw then so be it. I'm a big fan of the lo-fi aesthetic generally though - I know that some people just aren't.
I'm eagerly awaiting Tadlock's, things are looking very promising indeed.:)(y)

We're just discussing how it sounds and why it sounds that way. It's music, this is a message board, music gets discussed.

I think people need to get off the 'vocal mix' topic because it's clear that not one of us really knows what we're talking about, and it sounds quite precious when you read through it all (myself included).
With all due respect, that's rubbish. There's nothing wrong with deliberating over topics like this. It's part of the music and that's what this message board is all about. A band, that makes music. This is why we're here. Some people may be more interested in what kinda underwear the beastie boys wear, or who their favorite spice girl is, or how much iron is in their diet. I personally ended up on this message board because I enjoy and am fascinated with the beastie boys' music, call me crazy.
Also, I'm a recording engineer by trade, it's my job, so you'll have to pry my cold, lifeless fingers off of this topic whenever it comes up :o.

Yeah, I mean fair enough, I know fuck all about sound engineering. But that doesn't mean I can't distinguish the differences in how they sound across different eras and songs, and I also know what I like. I'd even go as far as saying it's fairly interesting to here other viewpoints on a topic that is pretty varied throughout the Beasties recorded career. And it clearly generates a lot of opinions, which is cool.
Anyway, the songs good. I see no reason for change.

In the first sentence, it's describing her. In the 2nd, it's describing the place we are/were at. That's how Yauch used it. A "noun" refering to a place, not a person.
This also reminds me of the interview at SXSW where Yauch said clearances for AIFST (I think) were a bitch and then immediately turned to the other two and said, "Can we say that?" The questioner from the audience said something like, "I think you can say whatever you want." Yauch responded with something about their lawyers taking issue with that. He could have just been talking about cursing, but I don't think so.
I agree with you, Pshabi, that there is a distinction that can be made between its uses. But again, they've never used this word in any of its senses before, so it's interesting to me.
What's even more interesting is if Mike actually uses "hoes" in that one line. Language is evolving and so it seems are the boys.

My moms claims a new Beastie Boys track was previewed on Radio 1 this morning. Anyone able to confirm this? I'll try and investigate it.
dave790
05-11-2009, 02:25 PM
Radio 1 got the world premiere of Ch-Check It Out so it's highly likely. They advertised this fact by playing a 'preview ad' with bits of the Ch-Check It Out acapella, and I think Mike said a few words. It eventually went out on the Zane Lowe show.
Unfortunately I'm travelling at the moment, I too have several Radio 1 family listeners and sometimes check out the Zane Lowe show, but atm I have no idea! Can't get up any of this mornings shows either, obviously I'm presuming any preview would have been in Moyles show...
Good luck in your investigating. I'll be pissed if it's played first on R1 and I'm not even in the fucking country or able to hear it! But ahh YouTube...

i have no problem with the whole lo-fi thing....in fact I like it...but my issues with LMCA isn't the lo-fi aesthetic...its the mixing. It sounds flat, and its a pity. Again, listen to "Pass the Mic" its gritty and all, but it sounds dynamic, everything has its place...Lee Majors sounds murky..and not in a good way.
Still a good song and all.

I'll chime my two cents in. With TT5B being all rap and computer driven, and TMU being a non-hardcore type of instrumental. Lee Majors is bringing them back 10 years. But I wouldn't say it's the best track they've done in 10 years. There are several off of TT5B that are just awesome.
Lee Majors fresh and new and different. It's not what I expected as the lead single or first track to leak or whatever. I drank the Beastie kool-aid a long time ago so I'll like anything they put out. But the hardcore vibe doesn't strike the same OMG this the best shit ever nerve with me. The track is definitely growing on me...it's good.

Anybody on here know what this means? I've been working on it for like 5 minutes and I still can't figure out what this guy is trying to say?
It's a punk rock song that sounds very similar to "Time For Living" with raps on top of it and a scratch-interlude (which we heard on every single track on TT5B.) I'm not saying it's a bad song, I think it's a dope track, but to call it the best Beastie track in 10 years is pretty ridiculous. They gave it away as a bonus for a reason. I doubt it's even on the new album.

I hesitate to say anything because you guys can be such jerks and I don't have your credentials. I don't listen to Beasties the way you do and I can't trace the equipment they used to record everything or whatever other crazy details you guys are into. I don't give a shit. I don't study the lyrics. I don't listen that hard. I usually don't like the new song and then six months later I'm listening in my car and it takes me by surprise when I realize that they said something really cool and then they have me.
I am encouraged by whatever the Beasties seem to get off on. I love seeing them live and I want them to enjoy touring, so whatever they're into that keeps them fresh is okay by me. During the last two tours they seemed to enjoy playing things like Time For Livin. I don't want a whole album of that, but I'm glad that they're having fun.

As for TMU. I really don't host any dinner parties. But, if I did... I'd throw it on the hi-fi.
All jokes aside. I DJ'd my friends Seth's wedding reception... and during the dinner I played a bunch of songs off of THU and TISFWO and people were happy and in a good mood.

Is that right? Where'd you get that info from? I figured the whole Off the Grid approach meant that they must have recorded the parts together like in the Off the Grid video, or at least the rhythm section parts of the tracks? I really enjoy TMU either way but I like to keep my tech-spec info straight - nerd-style! If you're correct then it would be impressive - the playing on TMU certainly has a very coherent feel.

The MP3 was ripped from the WAV at 320kbps.. 256kbps is "CD Quality" so if they came from the same source they should sound exactly the same. MP3 is only really lossy if you rip at low bit rates.. People will argue that mp3 sounds inferior etc against FLAC etc. But I bet most of them couldn't pass the Pepsi challenge..

Yeah, I think these are new. Their voices sound a lot more similar to the TT5B days then they do to the CYH days. Yeah, agree! Especialy Adrock's voice.

Lee Majors is a great track, really like it, but I am really into punk & hardcore so its fine by me when the BBoys set the record straight!
Does this new track mean the bboys going bionic on the new album?!
