So look, we all see the ugly orange padlock here and there's a lot we can all do to prevent it in the future.

Some of us have differing viewpoints, some of us have simillar ones, some of us use humor to convey our points, some of us facts, some use blogs, and some use being offensive for the sake of being offensive.

For this place to be anymore than a liberal circle jerk, we have to accept some people come here just to grief.

I think we all know the rules here and they've been enforced fairly laxed. So lets take it upon ourselves to use some common sense around here for a change.

I humbly suggest we all try and be civil, don't stop being funny. But like Patrick Swayze once said, "Be Nice" If that doesn't work and you feel like someone is being offensive we do have an ignore user function. Should be a last resort but let's be honest trolls don't only need forums, then need food, starve the troll, the troll will move on...

Here's hoping things can proceed...

yeah well, I actually think it's kinda bullshit that thread was locked. no disrespect tpk, but we're adults and I really don't think anybody needs to be shielded from rob or anybody else.

I don't think it's a matter of anyone having to be "shielded" from RobMoney and his insubstantial perspective, I think it's a matter of preserving the quality of discussion in the forum. RobMoney decided that instead of making a rational, intelligent, adult attempt at conversation he would descend into (allegedly) fake racism and act like a prick just to get a rise out of the people who were actually discussing the topic at hand. Childish, immature, ridiculous - and yes, offensive. I don't have a problem with the mods acting on behalf of the rest of us to ensure that we can have a serious conversation in which people express genuine sentiments.

Common sense and civility are indeed the bywords that will prevent the recurrence of such a measure, but only if taken to heart by certain people. Not to point any fingers.

I thought the thread was moving along nicely - it was a nice combination of fact, opinion, emotion, and ridiculousness. It was great seeing people (and some who don't hang around these parts much ) getting into side discussions as well.

Even though I understand what tpk did, I don't agree with it and wish his warning to rob would've been private.

I don't mind robmoney, we have our offensive and healthy banter and there's an ignore button for us to use if we need

there are a ton of elephants in this room

meh, I actually think that censoring rob just puts a bigger chip on his shoulder.

and I was more disturbed by what funk was talking about anyway.

I think it's interesting to try to get to the bottom of why people think and feel the way they do, especially if you disagree with what they're saying. putting a lock on a conversation doesn't magically turn everybody into more polite conversationalists, and it doesn't allow anybody to understand each other any better.

I'm just saying, we're adults, and I don't think the lock was necessary.

King PSYZ
05-09-2009, 04:18 PM
Well the thing is don't lock the conversation over one person (this is at least twice a thread here has had this happen because of rob) kick that person out if you think it's that offensive.

Personally I think anyone who goes that far out of their way to be offensive has nothing to offer or bring to the table and you might as well ignore them or have management show them the door.

He knows more than most what is and is not tollerated on this website, yet choosed to continue for kicks.

RobMoney$

I can tell you exactly how you can prevent any conversation from being locked or edited in any way, and I'm pretty sure TPK will agree.

Don't bother the admins with the "Report Abuse" button.

We're all adults here (I think, with the exception of BeastieBoysBaby).
If you're offended by something I said, SEND ME or the person who made the post a PM and clear it up with them.

I'm not saying that we should have carte blance with offensive behavior. I've reported people before myself and have seen them banned for using racial slurs, but that should be a last resort. Unless someone comes in dropping the N word or obnoxiously making fun of Jews or any other race then I'd just not waste my time worrying about it.

I just feel that if you're going to join in on the liberal vs. the conservative POV battle on a certain thread of conversation, don't get offended when the other side gives it back to you.

For instance:

Saz says
so, according to your logic, all illegal immigrants should be beaten to death?

I say:
I think they should be tied up to a pole in the town square and stoned to death.

I thought I was being pretty obvious that I was just being sarcastic. Perhaps Saz didn't?
Obviously I don't believe all illegals should be stoned to death, and I'd like to think that saz has a higher opinion of me than that.

Either way, I think we should either,
1. Open a dialogue with the person who offended you and clear up the issue on your own.
2. Don't join in on conversations that have the capability of personally offending you.
3. Turn off your computer or use the ignore function.

We all are offended by different points of view and opinions, it's going to be awfully hard to decide who's opinions are banworty and who's aren't.
For instance, I wasn't the only person who posted about being offended on a certain level that kaiser chose to include the jury's race in the title of the thread.
Now we can play the "Let's report each other anytime we can" game and most likely all we'll achieve is to annoy the hell out of the admins, or we can act like adults.

King PSYZ
05-09-2009, 07:12 PM
I think you're missing the point, when you say you were being offensive knowingly just to get a rise out of people, that's a different animal than saying something that someone else takes offense to.

You want to be taken seriously, then present yourself as such. You have your opinions, fine, you have what you consider humor, fine. As long as it's not being overtly offensive whatever floats your boat.

But if your idea of being funny is just offending people and trying to ruffle their feathers... well it's not, just stop.

King PSYZ

I also know Funk said some pretty retarded stuff too, but I can't take anyone who would wear this (http://beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=1643587&postcount=1631) all that seriously, moreso when they quote neo nazi sources...

RobMoney$

So this is you being more accepting of others opinions and "continuing on"? Or was that just what you wanted me to do?

Are the liberals are the only ones allowed to be sarcastic?
And I could care less if you take me seriously. Maybe I was trying to deal with saz's criticism of me with HUMOR. Do I always have to be serious?
Either way, Thanks for the lecture King Psyz. (y)

Personally, I'm very offended by this thread itself.
I think YOU'RE way out of line making a thread that singles me out and is a thinly veiled excuse for you to vent your anger about me and to lecture me like I'm one of your children.

But like I just said, I'm not the type to go run to the admins everytime I get offended.

*Seriously?* (http://www.davidvgonzales.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/facepalm.jpg)

Sometimes I don't think you read a whole post, just skim and look for something to latch onto and get all WARBLGARBLy about.

This thread is directed at everyone, you, the people who let posters like yourself get under their skin, and anyone wanting a healthy discourse around here.

If your contribution to this forum is racial humor for kicks or being offensive just to be offensive, thanks, but no thanks for me anyway. You can't deny tpk said he closed that thread because of your posts... You want to offer your point of view or a differing opinion, I'm all ears... eyes, whatever. It's boring when everyone agrees. If you feel the only way you can do so is through being grossly offensive or racial then I'll pass.

RobMoney$
05-09-2009, 09:47 PM
I've chatted with TPK about this and you'll be happy to know everything's fine between he & I.
He closed the thread because someone reported one of my posts for being offensive. Seeing as you're a reformed "banned" member yourself, I'd think you'd be sympathetic to people misunderstanding what you intended.

It's disappointing that you only seem to want to see one side of the issue and can never meet anyone halfway.
It's also disappointing that you are attempting to limit my contributions and more importantly my character to a few sarcastic misunderstood racial jokes.
You obviously have an axe to grind with me and I don't appreciate you doing it in an open forum.

Hopefully the admins will close this poor excuse of a thread down.

YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT

I have no problem with you, I have a problem with the racial humor. If you can contribute something here without it I would be totally stoked.

And I was banned because I posted a messenger log where minton basiclly told the bbmb to fuck off.

RobMoney$
05-10-2009, 12:44 AM
...and you're obviously never going to see my point about it not being a good idea to make sarcastic comments and then get offended when someone volleys sarcasm right back at you.

But Thanks.

And since you didn't make this thread directly about me supposedly,
I'm interested to see who the lucky person is who gets the next Psyzmac lecture.

So we're you the one who reported me?
Seems kind of obvious since you're the one leading this campaign, just want to know if you'd have the character to admit it.

I give up... enjoy your bridge troll, it now has one less resident.

RobMoney$
05-10-2009, 02:44 AM
I knew you made this thread directly aimed at me.
Thanks for finally confirming it.
And I'll also take that as a confirmation that you're leading the campaign to get me banned.
Soo obvious.

I think we can lock this bitch down too now.

Dorothy Wood
05-10-2009, 12:43 PM
I honestly didn't even know you could report posts. I never noticed that button. ha.

alright, it makes more sense now that it was locked. if people complained and stuff.

interesting. hmm. well, I have to poop.

I'd just like to point out the fact that King Psyz-PsyzMac-Justin is someone who likes to portray himself as this champion of equality and as a progressive thinker.
How completely ironic that he turns out to be someone trying to lead a campaign to censor and silence.

Scary what one or two people with an agenda are capable of.

The Problem is not the Pachyderm.

the problem is putting too much weight on the poster instead of the post itself.

I think what it all boils down to is this: learn to disagree without being disagreeable.

This means any time there is an argument in the Political board, don't resort to taking the low road. No name-calling, don't be hateful, don't be a racist (if it's serious, it has no place here, if it's a joke, then you have a fucked up sense of humor). Don't know how to make it any more simple.

I don't know about you, but retorts like "campus fuckface" and calling for the stoning of illegal immigrants is not what wins arguments.

You'd better change your quote then, Brett.
Someone may misinterpret it as homophobic and become offended.
Sarcasm can be tough for some people to understand sometimes, especially when that someone has an agenda against you.

nobody's going to misinterpret it as homophobic because i don't have a history of being homophobic

What do you mean, you have an established history of calling people homo's right there in Lambert's sig.
What an absolutely disgusting sense of humor you guys have.

Just head on over to the family album where just such a debate is taking place.

all i'm saying is, sometimes sarcasm goes unnoticed because it's too subtle, and sometimes it goes unnoticed because it sounds reasonably genuine

it's not effective in either case

I recommend people take more advantage of the ;) face. Thats what you should use to let people know you are joking.

Dorothy Wood - "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this."

Echewta - "Dorothy, your stove top hat looks megatard and reminds me I need to go home and make stuffing ;)"

Dorothy Wood - LOL

Imagine what she would have said if I didn't use the wink face????
