I've been on a break since 1994.

Me too. My break was only 2 weeks though. I'm training for a 5.2 mile run. But before I started this a few months back the only exercise I got was in PE in school, and I left school about 5 years ago.

I'mma try out the nike+ aesop rock thing

I have a 2.4km fitness test tomorrow. Did it 6 weeks ago in 8.49, not going to break any records this time. We get 10.30 for it and I can do it without losing my breath in that time.

5.2 miles? 2.4 km?

what the hell people?

Is you issue the random numbers, or us talking about short distances?

The reason for the 5.2 miles is that its teams of 5 each running 5.2 miles which works out as 8 laps round the town centre, which equals the total distance of a marathon.

jabumbo
05-13-2009, 01:59 PM
it was the random amounts.

but if you want to be specific, your 5 man team is still 385 yards shy at 5 x 5.2

Helvete

2.4km is 1.5 miles. Is that so random? It's just the distance they deemed suitable for a basic gauge of fitness.

On my first run (the day I started this thread) I just got a little longer than 1km before I had to start walking.
I've been out every other day after that, and yesterday on my 12th time I ran 6km without a problem.

i'm actually getting worse at running. my first day, i ran 3 miles without having to stop. now it's a week later and i can only do 2 (slowly) and i have to walk twice during my 3rd mile. what the hell. it's not like i'm overexerting myself, i'm having rest days.

i'm not looking forward to this 5k next thursday. maybe signing up was a bad idea

Around February I started running almost every day. 4-5 times a week and have built up to 4-5 miles a day. I took about a three week break late April -early May but I've been back on it a coupla weeks now.

With any exercise regimen you'll have good days and bad days. Some days I run my first 4-5 and feel like I could keep going another five. Other days I have trouble getting through the first half.

Try to do it at the time of day you feel most energetic. For me that's right around noon or 1 so I go at lunch. If I tried to go after work the most I could get is 2-3 miles 2-3 times a week.

signing up for a 5k is NEVER a bad idea....

i used to run almost every day after work. i would get home at 4, run and stuff have time to relax a bit before dinner.

now i have to work later and don't get home til 530-6. so im pretty hungry and can;t hold off dinner prep long enough to run. so im becoming fat and lazy and i hate it

I worked a 9-3 the other day and done my best time for 5.2 miles. The big day is this sunday.

I just started collecting sponsers yesterday (because we never really had a full team) and i'm already at £130. The minimum about needed for a team is £150 and the rest of my team seems to be slacking with the donations seeing as I've got so much.

i'm just worried i'm going to embarrass myself. i mean it's not a super-competitive race or anything, it's for fun and charity and socializing but still, i'd feel pretty shitty if i came in dead last or had to slow down and walk or something. currently i'm hitting about 27 minutes. my goal had been to bring it under 25, i feel like that would have been respectable for a first-timer who doesn't run much, but i spent the week leading up to my graduation drunk off my ass and the following week recovering from that week so i kind of slacked off in the training and i'm back to square one, with about a week until race day. i'm not terribly optimistic. if i hadn't paid the registration fee i might even skip

jabumbo

anything under 30 is perfectly acceptable for a guy running a 5k

i mean, i used to run 22 in high school, but since then i haven't cracked 25 and i most of the time i've felt like i was in great shape

running is a crazy thing. one time back in high school, I hadn't trained all summer before trying out for basketball and my mom flipped out. it was 11 days before try outs and she drove me to a track every day and made me run 2 miles. the first day I felt like I was going to die and pretty much just ran a half mile total and walked the rest. by the 11th day, I ran 2 miles without stopping.

then at try outs I was the fastest runner. (y)

I should start running. I ran a couple of times a couple months ago, but got discouraged because it's hard and bike season started. I should've have just told myself my own story.

running is a crazy thing. .

unless you are an athlete or TAL.

I'm ok with running for a train at the station sometimes but if there's a train a few minutes after that I can get I'll wait until that one.Unless it's the last train then I will run and spill my Burger King coffee

I ran for two months this last winter and realized I hated it with a passion.

honestly i'm kind of coming to think that i hate it too. every now and then i try to get into the habit but i dunno, i just can't get into it. i have to force myself to get out there and within like 10 minutes i just wanna quit and go home, i don't really enjoy it. and not in the "i've hit the wall, i gotta break through it" way, i mean in the "this sucks, maybe i'll just do some sit-ups or something" way. like i keep running regardless of the desire to quit but i never get that joy of breaking through

but i paid more than i'd care to admit to register for this race and that stupid girl i like for some dumb reason is running in it too so i'm gonna do at least that

Bob
06-11-2009, 10:30 PM
i did the race today and i was really psyched because i finished with a time of 22:41, which is far and beyond any time i could have ever have hoped to have achieved, until a teammate informed that due to construction they cut off a portion of the route so it was more like a 4.5k. i have no idea what that time translates to into 5k time, probably somewhere between 26 and 27 minutes but still, that's pretty respectable compared to the times i was getting in my practice runs, i'm happy with it for a first time.

i could have done much better, too, but i had a hard time judging my pace. i'm used to running alone, and there were 900 people running in this race so at all times i was surrounded by people running at different speeds and i couldn't really tell how fast i was going. at some point i found two guys who were going at a speed that i liked, so i followed them until i got to a checkpoint that was halfway through the race and i said to myself "half way, i have loads of energy, i can go much faster" so i did and then within about a minute i felt like i was gonna die and those two guys finished well, well before me. i should have just stuck to following them, i ended up having to stop and walk 3 times, which is ultra shitty because in my practice runs i've never had to stop more than twice (which is also shitty on its own).

still, considering i stopped 3 times, i think 26-27 minutes is decent for a first time. i finished 217 out 702 (i don't know why there were only 702 listed people when 900 people entered the race, but whatever) which i was excited about until i noticed that in my division (males younger than 30) i finished 60/68. at least i wasn't last. and i was faster than old ladies

all in all i enjoyed myself and i feel energized and motivated for the first time in a long time so i'm gonna keep with this

(people who read my facebook statuses will find this information redundant but shut up)

Bob
06-11-2009, 11:52 PM
scratch that, turns out i was 60/116 in my division i rule

Nice one, Bob. That's quite impressive. I don't think I'd get much of a quicker time than that (I run half that distance in under 9 minutes) and I've been running for ages.

I hate running, but I exercise and am in decent shape. I do other things; bike (spin class especially), elliptical, stair master or actual stairs, extra walking, swimming, jump rope, weight training ... plenty of other things to do.

After getting badly burned, I haven't been able to work out like I was in a month.

Now I'm getting back in to it and dear god I am so weak again. I only did half of the ab work I was doing over a month ago, but every time I cough I feel like my stomach might rip in half. I'll get there again but it's so annoying! I was getting SO strong. Grrrr.

:(
patience.

The results for the thing I done have come out and it looks like my team's finishing time wasn't recorded.... Luckily I took a photo of a team member crossing the finish line so I know we done it in 3 hours 23 mins which places our team about 30th out of 108.

I did my 5.2 mile segment in 41 minutes which was all right, I guess. I could of done better. This was the first time I ran with out taking a bottle of water with me and I think that messed me up

Bob
06-13-2009, 07:02 PM
i did 4 miles today, which is the farthest i've run so far, in a very comfortable 33 or so minutes. i think i might have even had enough energy at the end to go farther, so i think that's a pretty comfortable pace considering i'm still pretty new at this. i cut it short though because my shoes suck and i was wearing boxers and i didn't want to chafe (i've had that happen before and it sucks to even walk). i gotta buy some gear if i wanna be serious about this

i feel so terrible, i havent had the energy to run in quite some time and i am supposed to start my summer off this saturday and play in two ultimate frisbee games in the mid-afternoon. i know i'm going to feel it bad after those....

Bob
06-23-2009, 08:18 PM
i beat the hell out of my usual pace today. i ran 5k(-ish) in 24:30 and then did another 2 miles on top of that for a total time of 41:25. i probably could have kept going, too, but i don't want to push myself too hard just yet. last week i managed to do 7 miles without stopping to walk at a pace of a little over 9 minutes per mile so i think i'm doing alright for a beginner.

one thing i'm noticing is that i don't need to stop and walk as often; when i get tired, i don't really need to walk anymore, i can just run slower and it goes away. either that or maybe i'm just not exhausting myself as much as i used to, who knows. either way, i need to find myself another race, i'm getting pretty excited about all this.

hpdrifter
06-24-2009, 12:22 PM
Good for you, Bob.

My run yesterday was one of those off days. I couldn't go more than 5 minutes at a time without stopping to walk. I tried to keep my walking to about 30 seconds. It sucked.

Anyway, I hope it's a nadir and I'm back on the upswing with today's.

Well today was better and worse than yesterday. The first half was better but the second half... damn. I had to force myself to run 3 minutes at a time. It felt like a frickin' eternity! Maybe I need to change up my route.

Also, I find that it goes a lot better when I have something meaty to chew on mentally. If all I can think about is how much further I have to go it's the kiss of fucking death.

I actually feel great now, though. Total cardio euphoria.

Bob
06-28-2009, 06:28 PM
i tried a new route today, this one has a hill. it's a moderate incline and it's about .2 miles long and it fucking murdered me (i run up it once each mile long lap), i haven't been that exhausted since i first started running. i can really feel it in my leg muscles, whereas on my flat runs i tend to just get generally exhausted. i'm gonna keep at it though - i feel like getting comfortable with an incline will make me a much stronger runner overall

my best runs were always when i was pissed off. i would just go and go and not think about being tired, just run the millions of scenarios through my head. the only problem i had then is that i'd be too tired when i got back to actually deal with the problem...

i tried a new route today, this one has a hill. it's a moderate incline and it's about .2 miles long and it fucking murdered me (i run up it once each mile long lap

you puss! the 2 mile loop i do from my house has me starting off with about .2 miles of 6% uphill, then a short break, then a 4% uphill climb that is close to a half mile long.

suck it up, son!

hpdrifter
06-29-2009, 12:09 PM
I changed up my route mid-last week. It helped a lot. I added a segment that goes straight up a large, steep hill via stairs. I figured it would add some leg strength/muscle tone. I also added a segment that has a more mild incline, no stairs. I am not sure the grade but it seems to work.

Also, what is the ideal amount of time between eating and running? I think part of the problem last week may have been that I was eating too soon. I think I should try to go before I have lunch.

monkey
06-29-2009, 12:24 PM
i try to run between 2-4 hrs after eating, with the knowledge that i have to snack immediately after running, and have a meal shortly after that. but this is because i tend to get sick if i veer from this pattern.

my old xc coach used to say that you should give your body 2 hrs to digest the food and for the itis to go away.

hpdrifter
06-29-2009, 12:39 PM
Okay, that sounds about right. I'm going to start going before lunch whenever possible. I'll scarf some food right when I get back.

Bob
06-29-2009, 01:53 PM
my understanding is that between 90 minutes and two hours is the appropriate time to wait

hpdrifter
06-29-2009, 03:42 PM
Either I'm eating too much or 90 minutes isn't enough. Probably both.

Today's run was awesome. Not felt-like-I-could-have-kept-going-forever awesome but I felt energized the whole time and completed it not stopping to walk but twice for about 30 seconds.

I think doing a new route helped a lot, and changing it up so it's not all just flat and stretching out in front of me.

monkey
06-29-2009, 04:39 PM
the amount of time you wait has a lot to do with your metabolism. skinny guys like bob probably have a much faster post meal recovery time than... uhhh.. me. and, of course, it depends on what you eat. the worse is trying to run too soon after a light meal, then you're burping salad the entire time. EWWW.

i almost always eat after a run if i can help it. which is why working til 5 has completely killed me. i don't have time between getting home and needing to eat dinner anymore, so i really have to plan ahead and force myself to run these days.

i wish i could go back to my old work schedule, because i really miss the running...

hp: your attitude towards your runs is awesome :)

Thanks! :) I have never been talented athletically, never played sports (unless you count parks and rec softball as a kid, my team was always last place). When I run now I sort of imagine myself an athlete. I picture my muscles getting stronger and it keeps me going. I think about pumping my arms in time with my steps and watch myself as I pass picture windows to see if my posture is right. I sometimes fantasize that I'm training for something. Usually some stealth ninja assasin-type stuff but sometimes the FBI or the military.

jabumbo

well, i am officially out of shape, according to my race result on saturday

while all of my 5k's since the high school days have been in the 25 minute range, this one i squeezed myself in in the mid 28's. i really crapped out on the last uphill part of the race, with about half mile to go too. my legs felt like bricks and i think my throat was bone dry after about 2 minutes from sucking so much wind.

i really need to get my ass out there more often so i don't suck so hard next time...

Bob

I like to run at 4-5 in the morning, when it's dark blue out. I take a trail surrounded by dark forests so I scare myself into running faster/harder.
