Is this for real? I mean talk show at 10:00 PM every weeknight? How bad are the writers for television that they cannot dream up some character more interesting than Jay Leno?
Or is it us, the audience, have we become so smitten with celebrity we need to observe their lives every night before we go to bed? We need the movie, concert tour and television plugs between the commercials? Jimmy Kimmel is in trouble for telling ABC advertisers, “Next year on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ your product could kill Dr. Izzie. It just depends on how much you want to pay.” Look for his cancellation notice soon.
Or is it NBC is sooooooo cheap they just figure fuck it, we'll stop production costs and paying multiple actors, grips etc and just stay here where stars come to plug their wares at minimum cost.
leno's a nice guy, and he's been beating letterman in ratings for the last fourteen years or so. i think he deserves the slot.

But is this what TV has come to? An endless advertisement? No insight into anything relevant that can help mankind? Just ads. I'm not saying CSI or 24 are any better but at least they try and make you think of something other than getting hustled between commercials.
So basically from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM it's advertising every weeknight on NBC.

It's much cheaper to make than a one hour drama. This is why we get all the cheap crappy shows, like the one with the money in briefcases or the ones where people eat bugs, or where you watch people dance or sing. It's not clear how much advertisers are willing to pay for commercials on Leno's prime time show, but it should make more money than say ER did in recent years, even if they sell the commercials for a lot cheaper.
The big problem with that time slot (which is at 9 pm in the central time zone btw) is that everyone apparently now DVRs or Tivos the first two hours of prime time each night and then after they put the kids to bed they watch those shows during the final hour of prime time instead of watching a drama. The hope is that Jay Leno can pull in an audience, even for the last 15 minutes of the time slot, because you can tune in at anytime -- unlike a show with a plot.
I have never watched Leno and I won't start now.

On the surface this is no big deal but underneath the surface I see an impending collapse of how these networks have done business since the early 50's. The structure from which they've been operating has been rusting since the internet started to use javascript. Just like the record companies they are scrambling to get the best platform to continue on in the cyber world.
But this attempt at talk shows all night every night seems genuinely flawed from my POV. I see it as the final curtain on any high quality programming again on Network TV. It's pay per view or PBS if you truly would like to be entertained by TV.
At least cable, which reminds me as far as great TV how about that AMC Breaking Bad show?

I blame the crappy economy..... Leno gets garenteed ratings and will generate more advertising revenue at his hour than any new sitcom or reality show would,,,,, Fallon is a gamble, but Leno and Conan are sure things,,, not to mention it enables guests to promote thier crap on one more media outlet.
