Compared to Wolvie, the core qualities that was seen in the (third) trailer was there, just for some reason McG seemed like he wanted to end the film as soon as possible despite clocking around 2 hours. If it lasted as long as TDK, scenes, characters, etc. might have been improved and fleshed out and possibly been close to Cameron-quality but alas, the pacing was just generally too fast reach that level of awesomeness.
I still don't understand though why people still don't carry Magnums regular side arm.

i thought that jonathan nolan (dark knight) wrote the screenplay, but in fact he apparently only did some revision, as the screenwriters from t3, john brancato and michael ferris were brought back. my expectations were diminished when i found out about that. but yeah, mcg wasn't the executive producer and therefore didn't have final cut on this movie, as forty minutes of it ended up on the cutting room floor. so apparently you see and hear very little from kate connor, and the overall character development is diminished. but at least from what i've heard, salvation is a very big improvement on t3.
hopefully cameron will voice his disapprovement to mcg, so for the next film they'll bring in new screenwriters and not rely on hacks.

Is 12a the same as PG 13 (meaning you can't watch it without a parent if you are under 13)?

I really liked it, it was exciting and visually cool. It had a few cheesy lines - "Judgement day happened, man!" - but no worse than T2. I saw it at a midnight showing and I was getting pretty tired by the end but then ...I odn't know if this is a spoiler or not, but I was shocked when the incredibly realistic CG arnold showed up and my eyes and jaw popped wide open. Haha! I loved that.
Bale is on top. He was perfect. Common was pretty weak, but the only part I really hated was the girl who fell in love with the terminator. She was so stupid. You'd think in her day and age she wouldn't risk everyone's lives for a machine, no matter how cute he is, no matter how often his aussie accent slips.

I haven't seen it yet, but I agree with everything you said here.
Shitty, and what a waste of a good actor, too.
cheers
i should be able to see it this weekend, and i think i might be content if it's better than t3.

In the previews you see John Connor saying "win or lose, this war ends tonight" or something similar. Did he say that in the movie? I don't remember that. Did he touch her pregnant belly at all? I thought there was a scene of that in the previews as well, but I don't remember it ocurring in the movie.
i liked the movie; it's fun to watch, as long as you don't go in expecting much more than a movie about humans fighting robots.
i had mixed feelings about all the T2 lines that they shoehorned in ("i'll be back" "come with me if you want to live" "i'll live", etc), but they definitely missed an opportunity at the end, where SPOILER SPOILER they're putting the cyborg guy to sleep so they can give john his heart. just before the anesthesia put him to sleep, i would have liked to see him give a little thumbs up. wasted opportunity, i say
i do, however, think they could have made a better movie by putting this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I49A09-o9ls) on a loop for 2 hours
also, i want that HOOONNNNNNNNNNNKKK noise that the giant robot with the motorcycle robot legs makes when it moves as an alarm clock noise. i think that would wake me up
also also, moon bloodgood

i never get tired of that scene, it's always just as amazing as when i saw it in theatre for the first time. probably two of the most memorable moments on film.
i just realized that despite the joke about the lighting i made up above, the lighting in this movie really was fucking distracting. waayyy too many strobe lights at the end there

I think it was just like the noise the tripods made in War of the Worlds.
And you were talking about the older movie lines they shoe-horned in; I also thought of the one-handed shotgun cocking that Kyle did when they were fleeing the motorcycles. Kyle did that in the first terminator and I remember thinking it was so cool, and was the first time I'd ever seen it.
i liked it too. given the really dumbed down, crappy script mcg had to work with, he did a really good job. the casting was spot on too, especially anton yelchin as a young kyle reese, who is also a dead ringer for a younger michael biehn, and sam worthington whose marcus wright story arc pretty much dominated the film. it was interesting too that bale's screen time seemed to be reduced due to worthington and yelchin. perhaps bale should have remained cast in his original role as wright? anyways, the action sequences were phenomenal, particularly during the climax at skynet, when bale, yelchin and worthington fight the t-800, which was really cool. spoiler: the arnie cameo was really interesting. the first shot of his face looked terrible, very fake (just as bad as in the first terminator when arnie removed his eyeball), but the second shot of him looked much better, just like how he appeared in the first terminator. and the use of roland kickinger's body as a body double was very wise, as his physique is identical to arnie's back in the 80s.
salvation was definitely an immense improvement on t3, but obviously does not match up with james cameron's two original classics. hopefully for the next film, john brancato and michael ferris will get the boot and replaced with much more talented screenwriters. maybe even cameron will be brought in as the executive producer? i hope he at least points out the faults of the movie to mcg.

better than t3 (like that's hard) but not nearly as good as 1 or 2. It had it's fan-nerd moments where I laughed aloud. My biggest beef with it is that it felt like it was written and re-written too many times by too many different people, the story was choppy.
The Harvester was pretty sweet. No laser-skin though :(
The physics were wonky too, in t1, when arny cut his eyeball out it was gritty, and you felt every bullet that hit Kyle.
In this movie, people are getting F/X force-blast wire-exploded left and right and then running off without even a single broken rib or broken leg, lame. 6 / 10 at best.
I saw it today, so now I can look in this thread.
I sort of liked it, not sure what was wrong with it though.

Those lines have been in all the movies, starting with the first one.

I just love action movies with a villain whom you sort of almost want to be, as much as you would like to be the hero. Kyle and John Connor are good heroes but in all the terminator movies there's a part of you that kind of would want to be the terminator, too. It's the same in Batman, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight. Whether it's a nearly mute super bad ass killing machine; a raving lunatic having the time of his life; or an eloquent, ice-cold aristocratic Jeremy Irons type a la Die Hard with a Vengeance, villainy should always be slightly delicious, in my opinion. Whereas in Star Trek, for example, I don't think anyone would want to be the Romulans.
i reckon it fulfilled everything it needed to fulfill to keep the fans happy. it pisses! on T3 and of course everyone is gonna say "oh! it wasn't as good as the first two!". that's such a stupid and narrow-minded comment to make on the movie. it was never meant to be in the same league. its' focus is the war; how john connor tackles skynet/cyberdyne systems; how he figures himself out as the so-called prophet.
the first two movies show an alien amongst human civilization; this franchise shows humans in an alien civilization. we can't be shocked by the terminator as a killing machine anymore. we have to be entertained by humans anniliating machines.....and i was well entertained (except for Common's role *vomit*). the start was fuckin' baller. all the helicopters just coming out of nowhere and the "connor is on the ground" radio call. fuck yeah, cunts, let go to work.
wasn't without flaws. so many plot holes in the ending. it was very rushed but it didn't bother me too much. how much realism can you get with such a storyline.

i think the first half of it was very nicely paced but the second half slowed downa bit. the huge robots that made the loud hooooonkkkk sound were terrifying as shit... i dunno that sound, something about it. i thought the casting of the guy who played the new terminator was perfect. form the beginning, i thought to myself that he had a very familiar look to him, he looked like a mix of ed furlong and the guy who played the melty terminator in t2.
