Hoping the boys tour in support of the new album this fall!
I think they should do two sets like a jam band.
Set one would be like the Gala and be 1:15 long, then have a DJ play some dancy electro and hip-hop for 45 mins, and then the Beasties top it off with another 1:15 of hip-hop. Of course they would pull the instruments back out for the encore.
Edit: Oh, and my tread title should say 'sets'

Really? Are you serious on this?
Wow.
I disagree... they already did a Gala tour two years ago.
I think they should just do what they always do MINUS a portion of their instrumental set. Put on an all out HIP HOP show and show these ameatuers how it is done..
I DO WISH that they would do the two shows in each town thing again and instead of The Gala Event, do one show as Beastie Boys and one as Quasar..

Sorry, I though you guys like to have fun at shows and dance a little.(n)
All these sets (The Pageant, The Mix-Up Tour Hip-Hop nite and The Get Out and Vote Tour) were very similar over the past few year (minus the Gala of course). I thought that the 2 set idea would spice things up a bit.
I guess you guys have never seen a good band rock to sets, but that how we like it here in Colorado. I forget that I am lucky enough to see the Beasties at Red Rocks and you all have to watch them in a crappy arena.
Oh and some DJ's that I was think would really fit the intermission are guys like Z-Trip, Dj Shadow or even MMM if he took the frist set off. You guys don't like thoughs DJ's either, right!?!

I figure since James Taylor is going to be in their touring entourage, they could have little wine-tasting intermission, and the second set could be Judas Priest records played backwards.

They should do it like they did in the 90's. hiphop/hardcore/instrumentals. and some minor threat, reagan youth and bad brains covers

1. What was Hip Hop Nite?
2. The Mix Up Tour caused WAY TOO MUCH CONFUSION with the whole "Instrumental" set vs. "DJ/Microphone" Set"
It's the Beastie Boys, yaknowwhatIamsayin? sometimes you get a song made entirely by live instruments, but with RAPPING ON TOP OF IT!?! WHO KNEW?
3. The Pageant had the Instrumental Set as the "Intermission," while the Mix-up tour had Gala Events, which were essentially more intimate settings of the same songs...
My Point is they are always going to go between their Instrumentals and their DJ/Microphone Sets, because in essence, that what kind of band they are.
4. The Red Rocks vs. Crappy Arena comment- Really?

I don't know what half of this means.. but I'll respond.
How is them playing instrumentals fun? Sorry, I can't dance to "Suco de Tangerina"..
To "mix up" what I said earlier, maybe two sets would be cool because I don't think anyone is worthy of opening for the Beastie Boys BUT the Beastie Boys so... I would LOVE for Quasar to open for the Beastie Boys.. a 45 minute set of pretty much all of "Aglio E Olio" since they didn't tour for that, throw is some classic and a couple covers.. then take a break while Mix Master Mix does his thing for 20-30 minutes.. then the BBoys come out and put on a 2 hour Hip Hop set (no instruments)... THAT would be worth the $80 we're gonna shell out for tickets this year..

I like the covers idea...

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd.
Sorry, I misspelled so much stuff.:p
Sorry, I don't know the exact name of every tour.
Sorry, I am 8 and have something the fuck wrong with me.:(
Sorry, Red Rocks is the best place to see them that I’ve ever heard about.
If you don't like the idea of two sets that's cool.
I still wish they would do a 2 set tour. The 1st set could be any of the stuff they do that involves them playing instruments and the 2nd could be stuff that needs 3 MC's and 1 Do. Let them have a good 30 min. intermission between sets and have something that keeps the party going, happing during this time.
That’s all I was trying to say, and it is a good idea that they haven’t done before.(y)
Please kill me now, I have an opinion.

Oh shit son! My man James Taylor is gonna be opening? I'd love to see Yauch come out and join him on stage for Mexico and You've Got A Friend.

I thought the Gala event show was even better than the normal show in Boston in 2007. Although, both were incredible. Let's just pray Mix Master Mike sticks around.

Who was confused by it?
Shit was the most innovative live set they'll probably ever do.

it was great, no doubt.
just some people didn't know what they were getting. like you go into thinking you're going to get an evening of The Mix Up, In Sounds, Etc... but you got all that crazy shit, Do It, Mark On The Bus, etc. (y)
there were tons of threads around here asking the difference between the two.
but I guess my other point was, on the Mix Up Tour "hip hop" shows, they still busted out the instruments like they always do.
but I guess that's what the original poster is saying, so really it's nothing the Beastie Boys haven't been doing for years...

In reference to 1 & 2.. If I recall, most places had two shows. The first night was THE GALA EVENT and the second night was the regular show.. Not confusing at all.. the tickets went on sale, I scooped them both up.. BOOM! Time of my life... Well.. see below..

I totally agree.. I was in another world at The Gala Even plus I got to sit in the front row of the balcony drinking beer out of a bottle.. lol That was a nice place.. My mother said they had nice ceilings. Ironically the only show she ever saw their was Lionel Richie... Go figure..
THe show the next night was ok but that place sucked and security ruined my fun..

I must have seen some Hybrid Gala shows , earlier in the tours. The truest Gala Event show was at the Wiltern Theater, where everyone dressed up and they played all instrumental.
But the show at the Greek the next night still featured MANY instrumental songs, including a plenty from the Mix Up. Santa Barbara and Berkely were similar.
Same thing with Sasquatch. They billed the first night as the Instrumental Set, put it on a small stage , and rocked the house more than they did headlining the next night.
But even the next night, they still mellowed out and did some Mix Up, etc.
By my count, they played songs with instruments at least 10 out of 23 songs on their setlist in what was a headlining, big arena "Hip Hop Nite"
...sigh

^ Sounds like you would like the two set idea then, right?
16 or more songs with instruments and w/ or w/out vocals,
intermission set with Dj followed by
13 'no instrument playing required songs',
and then a five song encore with some of both.
We know, that you know, how they have done it in the past.
But the ture question is how can they do it in the future to keep it fresh and cover the scope of their catalog.

Yes, for the 2007 tour, there were lots of songs with voices and instruments (Sabotage - Time for Livin') at the meathead shows. By the end of that tour, they were playing a couple of instrumentals with no lyrics at meathead shows but otherwise it was the typical set. As you said, it was much like the pageant tour where they played a couple of instrumentals at each show. The galas I saw on that tour were mostly just instrumental (no voices, with a few exceptions, like when they did SWW -- nice example from Paris show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX7p5kUaQxM)).
I was a meathead. I missed MMM. I badmouthed the galas a bit. Lord knows I've been spoiled ROTTEN by seeing the band do interesting shows in small venues. I feel guilty saying that any particular show wasn't up to par because even their worst show would still make my top 10 list for the year when compared with other bands. And my memories of the gala shows are downright fond now.

Beasties are never going to play a two hour set, muchless a longer one. :p

I'm gonna play along in the spirit of the thread; their A/V people should edit together a song or two from each show on the upcoming tour and upload that shit to Youtube the following week or so. Real quick job, no bells and/or whistles, just some soundboard and a few angles. Especially if Professor Booty and Stop That Train are about to make a return. Is it a bad idea? A song or two a week, I dunno.

I just saw MMM play Denver last Sat. and this is the exact type of set he played. Plus he mixed in a little rock like he always does.

I don't think anyone's disputing that MMM is pretty dope live but I wouldn't want a set of that length in between two bboys sets. Shit, I'm drunk when I'm at shows, bro.

^That's fair. I though the problem was with the 'dancy electro' I mentioned.
Am drunk at shows as well, but I make sure to throw some other party favors into the mix so I can dance/jump around/sing along/scream for 3 hours straight.
I'm not a hippie but I can keep up with them at those jam band shows.
What do you guys think they should do to spice up the set list and/or structure of the impending HSC tour?
