you going to vote?From Wikipedia:
Elections to the European Parliament will be held in the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) between 4 and 7 June 2009.
736 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will be elected to represent some 500,000,000 Europeans, making these the biggest trans-national elections in history.here the EP website... http://www.europarl.europa.eu/elections2009/default.htm?language=en
in english, but it is available in the all 22 official EU languages
decisions in strasbourg/brussels affect our daily lifes. and the European Parliament is part of the process of defining an EU law, the only EU body that represents the citizens.
going to vote and express your choice doesnt sound a bad idea! ;) (y)

In my constituency there's no Green, but I went with another lefty party.
As long as those Libertas and Ukip nut jubs don't get in.

Wigan Borough had the largest BNP vote. Ugh.
Probably because it's full of uneducated dole scum who "hate paki immigrants, innit". Makes me sick (n)
The funny part is that it's not as if there's a noticeable amount of non-white, non-English speaking people in Wigan anyway. Just lots of simple-minded scally scum who left school at 16 to have babies and live off benefits (Wigan also has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the UK, might I add), the majority of whom it seems love nothing more than to lap up Nick Griffin's bullshit.
Dey tuck our jeeerbs!

Yeah...the BNP thng is a bit fucked...but don't worry about it. They didn't particularly increase their vote...problem is people just didn't vote for other parties in those areas...and due to proportional representation they got in...
Its a blip...a reaction to all the fucked up shit being done by the Government.
Thankfully in Ireland we didn't go with the extremists (although, to be honest, as shit as they are they arn't on the same scale as the BNP)
Fare well, Libertas!

The BNP are proper scum. They talk on TV as if they are misunderstood but here is an extract from the first page of their manifesto
The British National Party stands for the preservation of the national and ethnic character of the British people and is wholly opposed to any form of racial integration between British and non-European peoples. It is therefore committed to stemming and reversing the tide of non-white immigration and to restoring, by legal changes, negotiation and consent, the overwhelmingly white makeup of the British population that existed in Britain prior to 1948.
Its pretty awful (n)

I also have serious issues with apathy when it comes to voting. Some guy I know said he couldn't be bothered to vote but if he did he'd vote BNP because they were about "British jobs for British people".
When I pointed out to him their stance on race issues and the fact that you had to be white to join the party, he admitted that they sounded racist and that they probably weren't a good choice. It's this unwillingness to actually take an interest apart from when it suits people that drives me up the wall. It also shows how easily some people can be swayed one way or another by whatever party takes the firmest stance against the hot topic of the moment (immigration, MPs expenses scandal).

damn! i know next to nothing about british political parties, are these guys in any way mainstream? like do BNP candidates go onto morning news talk shows and stuff or are they more like the party that everyone generally hates but they're very loud and won't go away? i can't imagine a party that's so overtly racist could be very popular, that's terrible

You have Labour and Conservative as the front two parties, then Lib Dems, then the Green Party and finally UKIP (BNP-lite) some way behind. Those are the main parties. The BNP fall way behind that - they have always been one of the novelty parties that nobody really took seriously and have generally been an object of derision, but have just won 2 seats in the european parliament - the highest step on the ladder that they've ever reached. Some say it's a protest vote, although I think a large majority of BNP voters are ill informed benefit scroungers looking to scapegoat immigrants during the recession.
Fortunately, they don't get much TV time as they are derided by most sane individuals. Although if people keep throwing eggs at their leader (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8091605.stm) while he's doing interviews, then sadly they are going to get a lot more screen time. Better to let them get shot down in a hail of verbal bullets in a serious debate the minute they open their toady little mouths.

As Freebasser said, they are a long way down the list of political parties - they got 0.7% of the national vote at the last General Election. They do get pockets of significant support in certain areas - usually areas with very high unemployment. This means that occasionally they win something - a seat on a local council or in this case seats in the European Parliament (which is a significant role).
