View Full Version : To The 5 Buroughs - BAD REVIEWS
Haha! For the record, I am not a huge fan of TT5B but I don't dislike it by any means.. but I was reading stuff on Amazon and came across this page that has over 480 customer reviews of the CD. I went straight to the 1-Star reviews... Ch-check this out...

The record label must have missed a few CD's when they put the copy protection on the disc. My disc is DRM free.
I like the one who says the Beasties make gansta rap.. guy doesn't have a clue.

I have to say - I agree.
I thought TT5B was terrible. The lyrics were less than half arsed. The beats were sh*t. The album sucked.
And if "B-Boys in the Cut" is any indication of what is to come - I will be steering well clear of the next album 'cos this song was f*cking awful.
Any for anyone about to cry about my opinion - that is what it is - MY opinion - and it's just as valid as yours.

I too felt a little let down by TT5B, apart from Check it Out I found most of the songs boring...I appreciate old School stripped down hiphop but created using Pro Tools...it feels as if there is something missing - no warmth...lyrically, some of the political stuff was ok at the time but obviously has now dated horribly, a lot of the lyrics felt they were there just because they rhymed...the Beasties can write fantastic lyrics, funny with great story telling but for me, this was not it.
I want rap that paints me a vivid, colourful picture, it doesn't matter what it is about...whether it is riding the subway, going cross country on horseback, robbing a 7-11, drinking a Brass Monkey etc etc. I want angry that actually sounds angry ie Sabotage or Looking Down the Barrel etc.
I have held back so far on commenting on the new material so I could listen to it again and again. Lee Majors is not my cup of tea, I am not a big fan of their punk stuff bar maybe Heart Attack Man....Beastie Boys in the Cut...difficult to decide without a beat/tune present but certainly lyrically...poor. I hope that they gave these away on the 7" golden tickets because they were the weakest joints on the new album, however they have left me feeling less excited than I would normally be about a future release.
As has been said by others, this is just my personal opinion. Some will agree, others wont. I remain a huge fan and will buy the album (and hope I am suprised by it) and of course see them in concert as soon as they tour...it's just a waiting game :)

I listened to TT5B the other day while cleaning the house and it was pretty good times.

The American version is DRM free, but not the European. Maybe even the rest of the world, not sure.
To me the album is amusing, a goof whatever they would call it. They set out to make a classic sounding cheesy 80's hip hop record and thats what it is. Although I dont listen to this one much, but if a song comes on in shuffle I can see/hear the in joke. I can't help but see Yauch with a ponytail driving a Ferrari when I listen to his bit Oh Word for some reason, I espesually find his dry and droll humor very funny. I long for the paranoid, spiritual, geeky substance of Hello Nasty but feel music isn't much more for them than whatever amuses them at the time now and repeating and enjoying what they know, and I still love it for what it is and love them for that. Content wise the Beastie saga from bratty in-joke to trying to change the world was taken to it's conclusion and as far as it could go with Hello Nasty for me, rest is bonus, just playing around with a plethora of styles to pull from and more importantly doing what they want still.

tt5b was sick- rhyme the rhyme well, oh word, time to build? those were great tracks they others were decent as well
Everyone talks about recent albums and how theyre lyrically weak. When did they ever have complex rhymes? I think Hello Nasty is the only one that could claim that title.

I like those 3 a fair bit, too. RTRW is probably one of their best songs when you really break it down. Oh Word just needed a video and some live performances for it to be welcomed into the team. It's the kind of song I could see them intentionally flubbing and freestyling over at a show, just because.
