How does everyone back up their external? I ended up buying a similar one with the same memory and just copied the original to the other in plans that if one goes I can use the other and then repeat the process. I would like another way to back up all 170+ GB, but DVD's are too lacking in memory, is there another inexpensive alternative I don't know about that can serve as a third copy?

I just have two external hard drives and back up my laptop onto each.

the external drive IS the backup....
if you somehow crash both the computer and your external drive at the same time, you deserve to lose all your junk

My computer doesn't have any music or video files on it, that is the reason I have the external, to hold all memory that isn't needed on a day to day basis. Therefore my external needs a backup source if the system fails one day.

What do you plug an external into... If one goes chances are the other will as well. Viruses can travel across and infect both instantly, as one entity.

most external drives are USB
so if you're concern is infecting both, then copy all of your files over on a semi-regular basis and keep the external unplugged unless you are using it for something
