View Full Version : Check Your Head + Ill Comminication + Hello Nasty = Triology

The records they made in the 90s are their triology. I mean all three, produced with Mario, are very similar records - a mixed bag lp (you get hip hop, rock, instrumentals, fast songs, etc.) and fit nicely together. Different than the rest of their catalog.

Check Your Head is like the first Star Wars...a classic. Then you have the sequel with Ill Communication, in which some people think is better than CYH, while others don't - much like Empire Strikes Back. And then you have the further removed Hello Nasty, which a good deal of people (not me..I think it's perfect) think is not up to standards as the previous lps, however fascinating and funky it may be. Similar to Return of the Jedi's fate - fascinating, funky, sold real well, but not as critically acclaimed as first two, technically speaking.

So I guess that makes TT5Boroughs their.......... Phantom Menace? Just kidding...

I recently took all the Hip Hop songs from "Hello Nasty" (and added "Alive!") and threw some mixes from the Blow-Up Factor and made a CD out of it.

The result is a CD that I don't think many Hip Hop CDs (not just the Beasties) could even touch.

I don't know why HN isn't the answer when people say 'what is your favorite Beastie Boys CD'.. 32+ year old white rappers showing everyone else how it was done.

I agree that CYA, IC and HN was like a trilogy. Find me anyone who put 3 albums like that out in a row. The Beastie Boys owned the 90's... but ironically sold more in the 80's..

I did the same thing a few years ago minus alive and the blow up factor, but plus Remote Control, because I couldn't decide what to do w/ it. It really did make a great hip-hop album!

Another time I made a mix-tape out of all the hard core songs they had ever put out there, including Remote Control because I couldn't decided what to do w/ it.

side note. The non-hip hop songs also make a great ep on their own.

I once made a Mix-Tape of just The Kinks and A-ha songs.

It was the worst Mix-Tape of all time.

I agree tjpop, Hello Nasty is perfect.

yeah it's pretty much flawless. Actually maybe like 98% perfect. The only thing I don't like is that the title and artwork don't really match the record inside, and it doesn't really capture what the album is about. I mean the title is def cool, and I know where it comes from (that girl answering the phone at the offices of Nasty Little Man), and I get the funny cover. However, compared to their other records it's not as fitting.

License To Ill: young, brash, out of control...perfectly captures what the album is about
Paul's Boutique: thrift store, mix of cultures...perfectly captures what the album is about
Check Your Head: "you think you know the Beastie Boys, but don't - you need to check your head 'cause we play instruments, too!"....perfect
Ill Communication: distorted mics/singing + also communicating new conscience about what's wrong with the world (ie Tibet occupation)...perfectly captures what the album is about
To The 5 Boroughs: love letter to NY and oldschool rap, which was birthed in NY...perfectly captures what the album is about
The Mix-Up: they're mixing it up by giving us an all instrumental lp, also mix of guitar, drums, keyboards, etc....perfect

Hello Nasty:?????????????

Open up a can of sardines and say Hello to Nasty. I guess they went with satire for that album cover, like some of their videos.

side note. The non-hip hop songs also make a great ep on their own.

I made a Beastie Boys hardcore CD with this track listing:

1. The Biz Vs. The Nuge / Brand New (they blend into each other)
2. Deal With It
3. Believe Me
4. Nervous Assistant
5. Square Wave in Unison
6. You Catch a Bad One
7. I Can't Think Straight
8. I Want Some
9. Soba Violence
10. Nothing to Say
11. Mullethead
12. Heart Attack Man
13. Tough Guy
14. Time For Livin'
15. Big Shot (live)
16. Screaming at a Wall (live)

I wanted to add "I'm a Cliche", "Red Tape", 53rd & 3rd", & "Reagan Youth" but can't seem to find them board mixes of the Quasar shows... Also, what the hell is "Riot Brigade" & "Think About The Pit"? Those titles are listed on a couple of those shows...

From "ego trip's book of rap lists" from 1999.
The Beastie's kooky Hello Nasty cover featuring the cosmic sardine can had been planned to be even more way out than it was. Capitol Records gave designers at The Drawing Board a rare monetary thumbs-up in these days of skimpy budgets. Instead of just the Boys laying down inside the fishy coffin, there was to be a die-cut window which would reveal numerous different items therein (such as sardines, rice and beans, the band, etc.) via a rotating "wonder-wheel" similar to that utilized in on the classic LP jacket of Led Zeppelin III. Difficult production logistics and a rapidly-approaching release date, however, deaded what could've been hip hop's most elaborate album package.

That's cool. 10 years ago I made a hardcore mixtape out of pretty much what you just said minus "Screaming at a wall" plus "Remote Control". I have no idea what the tracklisting was, but I remember cutting out a panel featuring Apocolypse from a X-Men comic to make the cover.
