There's an ad for one through Best Buy starting at $299. Ya, I know that's cheap/you get what you pay for, but all I really need is something basic for school. My dad's an ass and trying to sell me a refurb TOWER for $900+.

Thanks!

I have one, I love it - Dell Mini 9. They are great if all you wanna do is email, a few documents and have it with you most of the time.

If you have the choice, get one with a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Basically that means no moving parts and won't break as easy but it also generally means less storage (but you can buy that cheap enough as an external device) and its normally a little more expensive but since its a cheap thing and that is all you want and you aren't a geek - it should do ya fine.

Is this a netbook, laptop or a desktop?

$299 is around the netbook price, but many desktops are getting cheaper (emachines being one of the more affordable but necessarily better in quality)

I got an ebook for free for this thing. Can't say I have any complaints.

oh, I kinda assumed you meant netbook when you said eMachine - just thought it was one of those UK to USA translations and I went ahead with my assumption
