I enjoy being in the car or a car of a friend or family member and waving randomly to people on the street. Not mockingly, but just to wave. I find that most people who are in the sunset of their years, wave back and give me hope for humanity though I tend to find this generation the reason why we don't have legalized cival unions for all sexes in California. Those who are younger don't appreciate a simple kind hearted wave and I blame youtube which has many videos that would lead said people to think a water balloon is coming or perhaps a coke bottle full of Mentos.

My point being is I'd like to see what happens when some of you wave randomly to strangers on the road. Please report back.

Thanks(!)

It makes me anxious when someone waves at me like that. I usually look quickly away.

i have a friend who introduced me to the random waving game

its the funniest shit in the world to see the long arm and hand pop out the window and wave at some random person walking their dog. if you're following behind in another car, i think just the way he pops the arm out is funnier than the reaction sometimes.

im always amused at how people just unconsciously wave back and kind of look at their hand confused. i did a gig handing out flyers once, and there;s this kind of biologically ingrained response to hands and arms coming at you. i found that if someone took something from you 99% of the time, the person behind would take it too if they saw you give one away

i think if you honk the horn and wave, the wave return rate is about 96.99%

kids in back of cars often look at you when you're on a motorbike so I often wave at them and they nearly always wave back or they start to cry - either is good for me.

random m80s behind people walking their dog as you drive by were the tops

back in the late 80's I used to sell my soul for the post office and on occasions would get a ride home from a certain individual who would find great pleasure in making baboon noises out the window when passing an old lady tendering her lawn.

great days(y)

You have to wave to random people at least 3 times before you get to work in the South. You get a punch card and everything.

I much prefer a random tooting of the horn. Especially when I used to finish work at 3am.

I just assume everyone plays this game so I no longer acknowledge tooting of horns.

I like making weird faces at kids when their parents aren't looking. It's harmless but you know they'll remember it FOREVER.

My ex had a go at me for making faces at a kid on a bus once. The kid was looking at me and smiling so I decided to play and she blamed me for causing problems for that kids parents as it'll now be sticking out its tongue all the time etc... I don't know how to play with kids, if people don't want their kids exposed to weirdos (me) on the bus then don't take 'em on the bus...

It was one of the occasions I realised what a control freak this woman I was dating was. We are still friends though.

People in North Carolina do random waves all the time. It seems to be a southern thing, my parents picked it up when they moved there. It was weird to me at first, but now I like it.

I like random smiles. There isn't a whole lot that makes me feel better when I'm having a bad day than a sympathetic smile from a stranger.

I think about that while I'm waving at people too.

If some guy was to wave at me and he wasn't a neighbor or anyone I've ever seen before, I'd probably flip him off, unless he was elderly, then I'd feel kinda sorry for him and wave back letting him feel we were friends for that quick two seconds.

A group of 5 10 year old girls were randomly waving at cars as I was driving home today - I waved back, they clapped. It was fun.

Not sure if this is just a UK thing but...

...do you guys/gals who ride motorcycles do 'the nod'. Like when you see another motorcyclist you nod at them to appreciate their mode of transport. It happens 90% of the time here, including police motorcyclists even. That often makes my day to :)

i dont know about motorcycles but its a similar thing when you learn to drive, when you drive past another learner vehicle the instructors always nod/wave to each other, i kept getting bollocked by my instructor cos i used to wave first before he got a chance to!

Harleys for sure. Jeeps for sure. Some other bikes and car guys do as well, but those two are a must. It's not just a nod, it's a wave.

But what if you need your brake or clutch (depending on arm used), dangerous to wave.

Or, is it like cars where everything is automatic on bikes - please don't say that is true and you can actually manually ride?!?!?

Yeah, some classic car owners etc will wave to each other tho; but not really on learners as far as I am aware.

^ Truckers do this as well.

You'll usually wave passing the opposite way. So it's your left hand (clutch) which you don't really need unless you're in the middle of a shift, which even still you can throw a couple fingers up to acknowledge.

you know what's better than random waving?
random thumbs up!

about a year ago, my friend and i had this awesome habit.
whenever we rode together in a car, at every chance given, we would each give 2 thumbs up to random drivers or people walking in the street.
we find it hilarious.
i guess everyone else thought we were retards.

but it was still awesome!

Me and a car full of friends will often do the "Two Doors Down" (Mystery Jets) dance, that always gets some interesting looks.

I don't generally acknowledge people I don't know on the street, unless it's one of those times (generally really early in the morning, between about 5.30 and 6.30) when it just seems appropriate.

Only slightly relevant, but I found that about 95% of runners and cyclists would nod their heads at me when I went out for a run. Something I certainly didn't get on my walk to work

Kids love me. I think it's because I have a big head. When parents aren't looking I'll stick my tongue out and touch the tip of my nose with my tongue. Then the kid will try to copy me.

It's a rural thing here, only you don't really wave. When another car is coming at you on a two-lane road, you take your right hand off the steering for a split second and wave it just slightly toward the windshield. It's like a tip of the hat but your hand stays near the top of the steering wheel. If the person coming toward you doesn't do it to, that person is not a local.

probably because people recognize that the both of you are one of the few poor/crazy bastards that are up and moving at such an hour

i would always get the nod when i would pick up coffee from the store at 530 in the morning because all the other guys in the shop were all fellow construction/labor brethren

I always say "hi" to cops. Unless they look really busy.

I also have a compulsion to try to take their guns when they're ahead of me in line. I can control it, but it lurks.
