View Full Version : bananas are gross, but amazing

so, hi, yeah, I had food poisoning this week. I puked out my mouth and peed out my butt.
anyway, everyone's all "eat a banana", and I was all, "ugh, oh...maybe".
because I hate bananas. and I have never peeled or eaten a whole one in my life. oh, I've had banana nut bread and tried some banana pudding recently (it was delicious) after 20 odd years of avoiding it. had it in some smoothies accidentally and didn't completely hate it I guess.
anyway, I bought one yesterday and just kind of looked at it.
finally around 4:00 p.m. today, I was pretty hungry, but still feeling queasy, so I decided to eat the banana.
At first I was embarrassed because I didn't know how to peel a banana and almost had to google it. but then I just kind of ripped it open. they are pretty funny-looking, but also pretty gross-looking. anyway, I ate it and it seemed like a decent banana as far as bananas go, but I didn't like it. it made my mouth feel funny. and it tasted yucky.
HOWEVER,
it is now 6 hours later, and I am only slightly hungry and my tummy is not sore anymore. coincidence? perhaps. but...could it also be that bananas are magic?

bananas are super easy to digest, which is why when you have a funny tummy, they are good things to eat. i eat one after i run to make sure i dont get sick and my muscles have good foods.

I just googled it now, jerk.
I figured it out in like 2 seconds, it was just harder than it seemed on t.v. it's easy for you to say how to open a banana, I never did it before! I didn't want to squish my fingers in it.

banana virgin
sometimes you get bananas that are harder to peel than others, and you kind of have to wiggle the top and you end up smooshing the top of the banana a bit before you finally get the thing open. i suppose that if the first banana you ever try to eat is one of those than i can see why you'd be confused

yes, it must have been a difficult banana. I thought you could just crack back the tip and peel it down, but that didn't happen so I thought I was doing something wrong. but then I just used my fingernails to make a little split and then peeled it apart that way.

I always get a protein shake called the "Donny Boy" before I have a late break to hold me over and it always does the trick.
It consists of bananas, chocolate yogurt and soy protein. Sometimes after having one of those, I debate on whether I'm going to eat during break or not.

A friend of my dad who had grown up in Poland during WW2 had never even seen a banana before he came to live in the UK because you just couldn't get them in Eastern Europe at that time. The first time he saw one, he bit into it without peeling it.
Suffice to say he has never eaten a banana since.

haha he ate the skin just as I did too before I knew what a banana was. :o
This is no word of a lie but my grandad used to give me bananas that were already sliced when you opened them up.

My nan did the same with a kiwi (she'd never seen one) but she said it tasted ok with the skin on, so I eat them with the skin if I'm feeling like it.

bananas really are chock full of deliciousness, although they also have a pretty high sugar content. i love to have em lathered with peanut butter.
its a real shame that they don't last very long in their ripened stage

I split the skin down the side when peeling, much better.

I love bananas! Except in smoothies, which sucks because it's in almost every smoothie. I also hate banana "flavored" anything.
Sometimes I accidentally smoosh the top like what Bob described. I hate that. I like to cut them in half and peel them from the middle sometimes instead.

when recovering from food poisoning or any gastroenteritis, the diet usually recommended is the BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. not super hearty whole-grain rice and bread for toasting, though. just stuff that's gentle on your tummy. i'd also include yogurt the next day or so too.

That's an old trick, you can do it with a needle and thread.

There's a certain number that if you eat that many it's meant to kill you (from potassium poisoning). This is why they don't do eating contests with bananas, it would all end in tears.

I regretfully inform you that your aversion to bananas is extremely weird.

sounds like it was a little raw. often the most perfect looking bananas are not the best. try banana with ice cream/whipped cream/custard. that's when a banana really shines.

monkeys are shitloads more dexterous and adept than us. they can use their feet!
i like to cut my banana open, i just cut across the tip almost all the way and then use that to peel. this leaves a little bit of banana in the tip of the peel, which i pop out. i think the tip is the tastiest bit of banana and hate to smoosh it.

This is how i like my naners. still a little green. i wont lie, i thought of ou ms. wood while eating one on the golf course
