View Full Version : The Thrill of buying and album at a record store.....

Ok, so this is my first post ever.....

Like most of my generation, we have all experienced what it's like to go to a record store and finally get that album you have been waiting for, some of us even used to ''reserve'' an album, remember that? I will admit that I've done my share of downloading an album from Itunes or getting a burned copy from a friend, but there are certain groups or bands that I purposely wait for the album release date, of course the beasties being one of them. It's going to be tough to not sneak a listen to all the links that will leak this album as most albums are leaked these days but I'm definitely not going to. I can't wait for the 15th of September to hit up Best Buy and just stare at a new Beastie Boys album, I may even just stare at it all day and listen to it on the 16th, 17 new tracks.......damn...I feel like I'm a teenager again waiting for Ill-Communication....

I'm sure I will sneak a listen if possible, but I always buy my Beastie albums. I might even pre-order the Hello Nasty reissue.

Is that the beat for B-Boys in the Cut?

The other two songs are great, by the way. (y)

Nah.....I'm not a beastie, like all of us I've rapped in the mirror or in my car and imagined what it's like to rock a crowd but that's about it. I only mention going to a store to buy an album because I feel that kids today are missing out on something important, music is special, at last to me it is, and it was an event to get an album, actually waiting for it, not downloading it a month early, there's no thrill, I remember not having enough money for certain albums, I think it was Liquid Swords by the Gza and I went half and half with a friend of mine and we just listened to it all day on his stereo, it was amazing, I encourage the younger generation to at least try it once or twice, it's magical........

I was actually hoping that if enough leaks came about then the boys would release HSC earlier....I'm itching for some new tracks......especially Nonstop Disco Powerpack, I don't know why but the title is just making me think it will be stellar....

What do you guys usually have for lunch in the lab? Yeah you should release that shit soon, September is fucking far away and people are excited about what they've heard.

I'm tellin ya I'm not....

I've downloaded albums in the past and I understand the quickness of it and the ease of it as well. Who knows, maybe I'm alone on this one.....regardless, I can't wait for July 14th, August 25th and September 15th and for any shows that the boys do in NY, hopefully MSG......

Come on Hammy, no one has a connection that fast, unless you have access to Beasties science lab.

Maybe we could listen to a stream of the new album on the official site. I remember MTV.com had a stream of TTFB about a week before the album dropped. That was probably the best thing to happen to MTV in the 2000's.

So you do know they're doing a show at All Points West in New Jersey...right?

How about a nice club show the night before...

Yeah, I know about the All Points Show, i'm just hoping for a show in NY. I saw them on their last tour at the Garden and the Nassau Coliseaum, simply brilliant, at the coliseaum, they opened up with No Sleep till Brooklyn and two songs later they dropped Eggman....insanity...

I hope they DON'T play those places. 2007's intimate NYC shows, Central Park, Hammerstein, McCarren Park... Those were something special. Everything loses it's charm in big places like MSG or the Coliseum, or Jones Beach even.

You're probably right, although I've seen them five times, they were all at big venues, but it's all I can go with, I'd love to see them in a smaller more intimate setting, but I'd see them anywhere I can get the chance. I guess there are pros and cons about every venue.

I saw them at The Garden twice, The Coliseaum, Giants Stadium for Field Day and in New Orleans at Voo Doo '04

Nothing beats Bboys in a small venue.

I read the title of your post, clicked on it, and was stunned upon finding out that someone can refer to BestBuy as a "record store", what have we come to. Please people, stop buying from places where the parking lot is larger than the square foot area of the store. ex. Walmart, Meijer, BestBuy, malls, fastfood. These places are making the rich richer while making us think the general public is benefiting.

there's absolutely no feeling like sweatin' it out until release day and standing in line with a shiny new chapter of your life's soundtrack clenched in your paws. it's part of the charm and magic. wouldn't give it up for the world.

ooohwee! and fingering through those liners and reading all the text while lstening through for the first time; priceless.

and dont even get me started in the thrill of midnight releases...

dammit, done gave myself a chubby just thinkin bout it. :o

I was kind of pissed off when I got to "best buy." :p

I buy all my Beastie albums at my local, independent record store. I'll be there on 7/21/09 trying to get my 12-inch if the rumor is true. And the guys who work there will probably talk me into buying a bunch of other stuff while I'm there.

But to the thread starter: I'm glad you're psyched about the new album and seeing the Beasties at MSG was great -- great in a completely different way from seeing them at a small venue

I understand that ''Best Buy'' has become somewhat of a joke and that it's not a 'record store,'' of course I know that. I live on Long Island ( NY ) out east and mom and pops and actual ''record'' stores are very hard to come by, I hate the nonsense that our world has come too in regards to chain stores just as much as the next one. I used to buy from a killer record store about 20 minutes from where I live, new owners and outrageous prices can do a lot to kill an atmosphere. My point was all about standing on a line and waiting for something you care about. Beggars can't be choosers, I'm not going to NOT buy an album, or music anymore for that matter just because actual '' record'' stores aren't out there anymore, it's sad but they are becoming a dying breed.

I totally understand where you are coming from when you speak about record stores becoming extinct. I work at a cd shop on the weekends. It's located within a music instrument/home theater/recording studio. Cajun music is our specialty when it comes to cd's. We do alot of special ordering, but nothing rare. We deal with web AMI for all modern orders so we are limited to what vinyl we get in. We don't normally carry vinyl, it only comes in via special order.

Oh yeah, our cd department is slow as hell. Like I really had to make that statement.

I went through a bad phase of downloading albums and it got to the point where I wasn't even listening to the music. Just downloading and putting it in my media player.

I've been putting off getting mos defs new album, as its still not out here for another 2 days, but even then I'll probably still get it off itunes or amazon's mp3 service. I guess the reason is if I'm paying money for it then I'm damn sure going to listen to every word of it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to stop downloading illegally though

anyways.. how can you buy a beastie boys album and stare at it like someone saw the virgin mary in a blueberry muffin and not even listen to it till the next day? i've been so prepared since PB came out (with walkman/brand new batteries skipping school) to hear each new album ASAP!! dude, lightning could strike you or we can be in the next black out and your gonna say, "Shit, i had the new beastie boys album but i was waiting for my euphoria to wear out, damn!" ha ha i'm just bugging you but life goes fast. I'm with laurie hammy when he says if it gets leaked he's gonna hear it right away. i'm sure 100% of ppl on the board are going to buy at least one or two copies on day one.. maybe 97% but who the hell are those 3%.. screw em

Dude sounds like a grammar school teacher or something, not a Beastie.
