this shall be interesting..
I pressed for more information in an interview I did yesterday with Homme’s wife, Brody Dalle of Spinnerette. Who’s singing? Who’s behind the kit? When do we get to hear it? She was faithfully tight-lipped, unfortunately, but did offer the following tease:
“I’m not at liberty to talk about it… but I think [the project] is pretty fucking amazing. Just beats and sounds like you’ve never heard before.”
We’ll let our imaginations take that ball and run with it (Songs For The Deaf meets Zeppelin IV? Yes please…)
Back in 2005, Mojo magazine did an interview with Grohl, who dropped the news as casually as mentioning the weather: “The next project that I’m trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck.”
We didn’t hear much more about the project after that until this past April, when French journalist Cyril Deluermoz reported that Grohl and Homme were recording together, which was shortly followed by an interview with John Paul Jones, who said the following: “I’m working on some other music, which is more rock based, with a couple of other people. We hope to be everywhere this summer.” When pressed for more information, the legendary bassist clammed up. “It’s a secret, actually,” he said. “I shouldn’t have even said that, you know? There are some exciting projects coming up, let’s put it that way.”
Exciting indeed. But summer’s here, so what gives? Chris Cornell’s guitar tech claims to have heard it, and legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin has acknowledged the recording sessions as well.
With the Foo Fighters on hiatus, Zeppelin down for what looks like the count and Queens Of The Stone Age enjoying some downtime, it would make sense that the long-discussed project would finally come to fruition this year.
Grohl has never made any attempt to hide his love for Led Zeppelin, be it with tattoos or all but offering to sell his kids for a chance to sit in John Bonham’s place for a Zeppelin reunion tour that never happened.
Furthermore, in what appears to be news of an entirely separate Homme project, Ipecac Records co-owner Greg Werckman told Rock-a-Rolla magazine that his label’s other co-owner – Mike Patton (Faith No More, Tomahawk, Fantomas, etc) – has been approached about joining Homme on some new material.
“He’s trying to get a lot of people involved in it, too,” Werckman says, before adding that Homme is “trying to convince Mike [Patton] to go out to the desert, but Mike hates the desert.”
Greg’s likely referring to Homme’s now-legendary Desert Sessions gatherings that Patton may have been invited out for, because the Grohl/Jones collaboration has been confirmed to be taking place in Los Angeles. But then again, who knows? It’s too early to tell for certain – there’s too little information involved. But for now, we can be happy knowing that somewhere, some amazing fucking music is being made, and someday we might just get to hear it.

I think Patton will be taking a few jabs at this. It would be great if they pass the mic often.

Sounds awesome. But if I could actually choose between this and the QOTSA lineup from Songs For The Deaf, I'd pick the the latter.

Shit, If I ever see Grohl, Homme and Patton on a stage together, I will probably leave a puddle on the floor.

This. Although JPJs latter-day gurning will broaden the appeal.
It's funy how for such a truly effeminate man, he plays bass on some heavy shit. It'll be interesting to hear, no doubt.
Oh, the Foo Fighters fan.
Not really. I owned the first album. I actually don't care much for them, but to say Grohl's not an impressive musician is moronic.

Doc is a Foos fan, and some other good people too. I just don't see the appeal in his 'music'. As a drummer, he's gold.

Fucking Grohl's drumming is times 6000 bazillion more talent compared to his singing and guitar playing.
He says he's a Bonham fan and having JPJ backing him up. Phew.

Well, he drummed on that album as well. I think he played every instrument on it. Dave kicks butt. <3

I don't like Homme. I've only seen him live a few times and always with QOTSA and I can't stand him. :( Having said that, I'm a sucker for bands who seem to be really enjoying themselves and for bands who play small gigs. So I'll wait and see.
I'm so happy for JPJ. What a great "fuck you" to Plant.

I hear people say this about J-Ho. I think he's one of the greats purely because of how much he gets music.

I've seen them at the lowlands festival 2 weeks ago, and as predicted they were friggin' awesome and I left a puddle on the floor.
And at the same festival I also saw Faith No More, so Grohl, Homme and Patton in the same weekend...I can now die a happy woman.

It streams. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ6arQ-qK34&feature=PlayList&p=FCC1368DF9BDE312&index=0&playnext=1) Buying this, for sure. Never been so interested in a band without an album. The way they handled the hype was genius, shows are sold out everywhere. The second half of 'No one loves me' rules.

picked this up today. it's definitely interesting. very classic yet very modern just like everything homme does. when riffing it's very zeppelin. grohl and jpj are fucking LOCKED in together. homme does his normal quirky and hard guitar work and seems to have worked on his singing. it's fun, interseting and original and as you can imagine they play very fucking well.
one bad point. the audio mastering is shit. the sound is very grating.

And I agree with you again. My top faves of the moment are Scumbag, No One Loves Me, and Bandoliers. Love it.
So happy I caught these guys at the HOB in Boston. Just wish they were coming 'round again. What a fucking concert. SO good.

No One Loves Me and Neither Do I, well I thought I only really liked the second half. But the first half is alright as a build-up, it's definitely improved. Fucking great tune; great 'fucking' tune. Mind Eraser, No Chaser has the dude who sang 'Marigold' on it!
Dead End Friends if definitely the most 'Nirvana' song. It only dawned on me gradually. I'm enjoying that a lot at the moment, but yeah, the relatively clean guitar and melody had me thinking of Kurt.
I originally thought New Fang was a jangly piece of shit, but I quite enjoy how Jonesy leads on this, it has that doo-wop feel like the end of The Ocean. The intro is a bit Rock and Roll. Not sure if that's a good thing, but yeah it grew.
I was unsure about Elephants originally, but the time signature fuckery at the start must have been fun for them, and it looks like it rules live. I'm gonna check out their show next year, and I'm looking forward to seeing this song played.
Interlude with Ludes and Bandoliers are probably my two solid favourites, just nice and odd and moody respectively. I quite like Reptiles and the vocal delivery within it, too. In fact, each track is pretty much a fully realised beast of its own device. The sleeper cut (as in so good it's surprising) is Gunman. Something about the dance-ability of it caught me off guard, and I love it. Daffodils is a great closer. The rest is pretty good.
The people who hate it probably had unreasonably high expectations, the others who think it's the best album evarrrr are possibly a bit optimistic. It's really good though. Could have done with Lanegan or Patton on a couple of tracks. It's striking how Jonesy has actually been through the 'dinosaur' stage of his career, it must be quite uninhibiting when working with younger musicians.
It's like a 3.89 out of 5, and probably really at its best use as a primer for seeing them play live. Which is how I'm treating it. That said, it's been on constant rotation since I got it, and I have a dangerously short attention span. It is very fun to listen to.
I heard one song on the radio the other day, sounded like a really good Cream song. Which one is that?
JPJ produced The Datsun's second album a few years back, I think he's been hanging out with young kids for a while.
