Her speech is a bigger train wreck than Governor Sanford's ramblings.

No matter which way I try and figure out what she is saying all I can conclude is she pretty much must have cooked her own goose somehow. She sums up everything I can think of that is wrong with politics today. Freaky stuff.

So I guess what you're saying is you have absolutely no desire to be better than the GOP, it's just your time to sling the political mud?
Way to be, dude.
It was wrong when they did it to Clinton, and it's wrong now.
I can see you really don't give a shit about right or wrong though, you're just concerned about your side winning.

She could have been 1 heartbeat away from President.
Is McCain dead? Has he been the victim of any heart problems or any other major medical issues since Obama took office? No, so therefore you're concern is invalid.
...as if Biden being one heartbeat (or bullet away) is any better.

Did she crack under pressure? Did the public spotlight get to her? The constant trashing in the media. The butt of all tv comedy jokes (Tina Fey, Letterman, etc.)

Maybe she just got tired of the job and knew she was an amateur.
Maybe she couldn't parlay a beauty pageant queen into a political statesman any longer.

Or maybe 1 of 2 other things:

A big scandal we dont know about (and will find out about)

or

An announcement of Presidential proportions.

Todd Purdum pointed out in his "Vanity Fair" piece, that more than a few people of her acquaintance told him that she qualified for a diagnosis of "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" (from the list of character qualities in the Psychiatric Diagnostic and Statistics Manual)

This is a politician who has thrown herself into the media spotlight at any given opportunity available.

So she says she is wasting millions of tax dollars. she just comes out and says she can't do the job. why is there even a discussion of a future bid in 2012?

Really, we've just got to put first things first. And first things first, as governor, I love my job. And I love Alaska. And it hurts to make this choice, but I'm doing what's best for Alaska. And I have explained why, though I think of the saying on my parent's refrigerator, a little magnet that says, don't explain, your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you anyway. But I've given my reasons. It's no more politics as usual.

she hasn't explained anything or given any reasons whatsoever! she just stares at the crowd, smiles, and calls an audible to help the team?
I definitely see the narcissistic personality disorder reference. completely deluded and obsessed with herself.

Palin resignation splits GOP

By Jonathan Martin | 7/4/09 2:53 PM EDT l Politico.com

Sarah Palin’s jaw-dropping announcement that she is quitting her job as Alaska governor before finishing even her first term has divided Republican ranks and the wider political community in a very familiar fashion.

Many establishment GOP operatives and political commentators of various stripes were withering, both about the decision and the way she announced it — in a jittery, hyperkinetic news conference that rambled between self-congratulation and bitter accusations at the foes she says are eager to destroy her.

The performance, by these lights, adds credence to the claims of some associates that Palin — burned by the intense scrutiny on her and the crossfire that swirls around her — is so fed up that she's ready to get out of elective politics. Even if it's only the small stage of Alaska politics she hopes to escape, skeptics say Friday’s events also diminished and perhaps even demolished what was left of her viability as a 2012 presidential candidate.

But her defenders believed an unorthodox move, even if risky, has a clear logic and may only further increase her standing with conservatives who don’t care what establishment figures in or out of the GOP think. Leaving the governor’s office at the end of this month leaves her free to travel the country, command large speaking fees, and begin the process of rallying her devotees without pesky home-state opponents criticizing every move.

These varied reactions were an echo of the debates that have followed Palin every step since her nomination as John McCain’s running mate 10 months ago — a surprise that turned out to be just the first of many surprises served up by one of the most colorful and polarizing American political figures in a generation.

At the heart of these conflicting interpretations, say people close to Palin, is a woman who is herself deeply conflicted about her brief past in national politics and how to leverage her sudden fame for the future.

Some of her trusted outside advisers were not informed of her plans to suddenly resign from office until today – they thought she was only to announce she would not run for reelection.

Fred Malek, a longtime Republican fundraiser and Palin ally, played host to the governor and her husband, Todd, less than a month again in Washington and said it was “so clear to me that she was terribly unhappy with the position she was in and the role she was playing.”

He didn’t learn of Palin’s decision until he got a phone call from the governor this morning, when she cited the pressures of a job that had become consumed with FOIA requests and ethics investigations and the demands it taken on her family and national political prospects.

Another prominent GOP source who is close to Palin, who also had no inkling of Palin’s decision to quit until today, said: “Things had piled up pretty steep on her.”

Meg Stapleton, Palin’s Alaska-based spokeswoman, called it “a fighting move.”

But even Stapleton acknowledged that the job Palin said she loved during the press conference had become a drag.

“It’s a liberating feeling. ... She can’t get out of there soon enough,” said Stapleton.

But liberation comes at a potentially steep price. These include brutal reviews from many Republicans, who believe that quitting mid-term in the fashion she did amounts to political suicide.

“There is just no good way to say quitting has made her more qualified to run for higher office,” said veteran GOP pollster Glen Bolger.

Until Friday, after all, Stapleton and others close to Palin had been saying for months that the governor would take an Alaska-first approach and eschew national affairs. The hope was to compile more of a record and develop more policy authority.

“I think Sarah Palin is on the verge of becoming the Miami Vice of American politics: Something a lot of people once thought was cool and then 20 years later look back, shake their heads and just kind of laugh,” quipped Republican media consultant Todd Harris.

Even those who were less critical of her choice were taken aback by Palin’s rambling, hard-to-follow news conference by the side of a lake outside her home. The performance had shades of Richard Nixon’s “You won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore” news promise in 1962, as well as Mark Sanford’s bizarre exercise in self-revelation just last month.

Palin mixed analogies to herself as a basketball player who knows “when it’s time to pass the ball” with bitter commentary against “political operatives [who] descended on Alaska — digging for dirt” as part of a “superficial, wasteful political bloodsport.”

“Palin is at her best when she’s being folksy but there is no way to be folksy when you’re resigning as governor,” said veteran GOP strategist Dan Schnur.

She portrayed her resignation as a selfless choice done for the good of Alaskans. She said they will now be free of the expensive and distracting — and she said bogus — ethics inquiries generated by her new prominence. “Some Alaskans, maybe they don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time, but I do,” she said.

But some believe Palin, for all the loose and improvisational feel of her news conference, was making a calculated guess that she is now bigger than Alaska’s small and remote political stage can handle.

With a recent book deal and ability for paid speaking engagements giving her great financial freedom, reasoned GOP communications strategist Carl Forti, “If she wants to run for national office it makes sense to get out of Alaska and around the lower 48. Resigning makes that possible.”

Malek and some of her other outside advisers expressed skepticism that she would run for president in 2012, but others saw in the move today the beginnings of a national campaign.

“She’s now made sure that she is entirely a movement candidate,” said veteran Democratic strategist Bob Shrum. “She brings no real experience to the table at all, but now this frees her up to carve out her own Goldwater-like movement.”

And then there is a practical matter, Shrum noted: Palin and her husband, with five children of their own and a new grandson, will likely never have to worry about money again.

“She could make more in two weeks on just speaking fees than in the rest of her time as governor,” said Shrum.

The move may also be pragmatic if Palin really does want to lay the groundwork for a presidential run.

“I don't think you can do a competent job of being a governor of a state next door to Russia and run seriously for president of the United States,” said Charlie Cook. “It's hard enough to do one of those two, let alone both. While Bill Clinton ran while being governor of Arkansas and George W. Bush as governor of Texas, Little Rock and Austin are not that far by Cessna Citation or Gulfstream from New Hampshire or Florida or California.”

And, Cook noted, there is little political upside to being a governor during difficult economic times, when the options usually range from tax or fee increases to budget cuts.

“Bailing out early may avoid making some of those tough decisions,” said Cook.

William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard and an outspoken Palin defender, acknowledged Palin’s move was “an enormous gamble” but said it could prove smart.

“Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues — and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska,” said Kristol.

Stapleton cited issues Palin was passionate about – energy, national security and free enterprise – but indicated that the governor was being vague about what she planned to do next for a reason.

“Those blanks need to be filled in,” said Stapleton when asked specifically what Palin planned after turning her office over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell.

Andy Barr and Josh Kraushaar contributed to this report.

Maybe she just got tired of the job and knew she was an amateur.

That pretty much sums it up. I am still honestly not sure what could have possibly possessed John McCain when he chose this silly, foolish, totally insubstantial person to be his running mate. The woman had no business participating in federal politics and now it appears she can't handle a state-level job either. What, it's a big deal to be neighbours with the Russians? My country has been neighbours with the Russians ever since it was founded and we're doing just fine. Pathetic. The only downside is that now the GOP will have to find someone halfway competent, which will give them a chance at winning next time around.

Watching Robmoney flail around is pretty funny too. Come on mang, stand up for your failure of a candidate. Tell everyone how evil they are for seeing Sarah Palin for what she is. What a joke.

I think it could be a myriad of reasons for why Palin has suddenly resigned.

I do wonder if there is some sort of forthcoming scandal that has caused her to leave. I'm aware there were still ongoing ethics complaints towards Palin, so it wouldn't be surprising if there's some skeleton in her closet.

I know some clueless talkings heads like Bill Kristol (who has no concept of reality) somehow believe this is some sort of strategy to launch her campaign for 2012, but I honestly couldn't see this working in her favor ("this frees her up to write her book instead of being accused of neglecting her duties as Governor!!"). I don't doubt she may still try to run for President, but I see no way in hell this has advanced her a step closer to the Oval Office.

Yeah, resigning for a presidential run in 2012 must be what it is.
The "quitter" label will do wonders for that campaign.
Anyone who even let that notion creep into their mind is an idiot, which is almost everyone who posted in this thread.

As, for the ever popular "Pending Scandal" theory,...

Her attorney has issued a see-you-in-court warning for doubters.

"To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as 'fact' that Governor Palin resigned because she is 'under federal investigation' for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation," Van Flein said in a statement issued Saturday

"This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, The New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law."

""I can say definitively I am aware of no criminal investigation whatsoever involving Sarah Palin. Zero," the governor's attorney told the Anchorage Daily News.

The FBI has said the same of Palin. There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we're investigating her or getting ready to indict her," Special Agent Eric Gonzalez, the bureau's Alaska spokesman, told the Tribune's Washington Bureau.

HuffPo also reported that she is resigning to work on bringing more crooked people into politics...Keepin' it classy, Ms. Huffington.

And we all remember this started with her daughter Bristol's mid-section back during the campaign. The media blowing up every public picture of her daughter they could find.
Do you have any idea what that would be like for a young girl going through that age and all the weird changes her body is going through to be examined in the public arena like that?

Here's another:

Statement on the desecration of photo of Governor Palin and baby Trig (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=96031513434&1&index=2)

The following refers to a post Conservatives 4 Palin made Wednesday and to which others are responding:

"Recently we learned of a malicious desecration of a photo of the Governor and baby Trig that has become an iconic representation of a mother's love for a special needs child.

The mere idea of someone doctoring the photo of a special needs baby is appalling. To learn that two Alaskans did it is absolutely sickening. Linda Kellen Biegel, the official Democrat Party blogger for Alaska, should be ashamed of herself and the Democratic National Committee should be ashamed for promoting this website and encouraging this atrocious behavior.

Babies and children are off limits. It is past time to restore decency in politics and real tolerance for all Americans. The Obama Administration sets the moral compass for its party. We ask that special needs children be loved, respected and accepted and that this type of degeneracy be condemned."

I suspect that she wants to be a Rush Limbaugh style commentator. Maybe the base will embrace her with open arms. The ought to laugh her off the national stage. That picture is a screenshot from CNN airing Palin's resignation speech. During that time, CNN wasn't zooming in on that child's tummy and going: "Is she PREGNANT?" What we're likely seeing is a blogger of some sort analyzing the CNN feed and zooming in on the photo to get a closer look and placing a question mark on whether or not that girl (I presume a Palin daughter, don't know which one) is pregnant.

You may deplore this tactic, but that is disingenuous of you to say that CNN is the one doing it.

I just wish she had come out and said something noble- if she is focusing on her family, come out and say it. If her Family Values keep her wanting to protect her family from the media, then come out and say it! If she is going into the private sector to put away crooks, Come out and say it!

All she did was pussyfoot around a nicely staged press conference, leaving the residents of her state and the rest of the country as baffled as she was when Katie Couric presented her with a line of questioning that she was not prepared for or quailified to answer.

This is not about the media or the Democrats tearing her down.

This is not about an enlarged screenshot of a youtube blog of a CNN affiliate airing (another) press conference that made ZERO SENSE.

I'm not into making bold predictions or asinine assumptions. I don't have a clue why she's resigning and I sure don't hold on to any of the theories why listed above. But I'm certain something must have happened for such a high ranking official to just Up and Quit.

So we screw around with each other on here, right?
So what you're saying is, someone like Mickill, Bitchmachacha, or Beth, or anyone other regular here who have posted pics of their kids are open to the same viciousness?
So if someone were to photoshop a pic of Mike's or Beth's kid, you'd be OK with it because it's their fault for posting the pic on a public forum?

C'mon.

Do you think Palin's 14yo or 10yo feel any better knowing it wasn't CNN, it was just some blogger from the Democratic Party who's the one photoshopping pics of them?

at no point did i defend the person who implied that sarah palin's special needs 10 year old was pregant. where did i do that? i didn't say it was ok. i believe i said it was "awful" and "unconscionable." i also believe i called the person who did it a "dickwipe". i just said it was inevitable, and if someone like palin wants to thrust herself into the public spotlight like that then she should understand that shit like that is inevitably going to happen, because people on the internet can be horrible. all i'm saying is that for her to react to the inevitable by saying "stop making fun of me, i quit" is a pretty shitty thing for an elected official to do

obama's exposed himself and his family to this too. if people start going after his kids, it will be awful of them, just like it's awful for them to go after palin's kids. but there's a risk of them doing it. and if obama resigns because of it, then he's a tool too

Sarah Palin did NOT resign because some dimwit with access to Photoshop and an Internet connection zoomed in on her child during a press conference in which she was resigning. Worse yet, you tried to insinuate that CNN was doing this. I watch a lot of CNN and I know they didn't do any of this.

And nice of you to jump the gun and say it's now a member of the Democratic Party who photoshopped a YouTube screenshot. Who will you say is behind it next, the Illuminati?

She didn't just quit at the first sign of hecklers.
This shit's been going on since she was invited to join McCain's ticket.
I'm not even sure if it's the reason she's resigning, it's just something I feel strongly about.

As for Obama "exposing" himself, I disagree.
I don't know why anyone has to "expose" their family.
He should be able to say, "Hello America, I'm Barak Obama, and this is my family, please vote for me" without having to worry about his children being victimized by the media.
He's a public figure. I don't see how he could possibly have run for president and kept his kids out of the media's eye.

There's a certain level of respect and ethics grown men and women should give to one another. Not involving someone's family in disagreements about our differing opinions of politics, or disagreements over anything should be one of those.

I posted this for you specifically from her facebook earlier today:

-- Meghan Stapleton

Trig is her newborn baby son who was born with Down Syndrome.
This is in reference to a seperate photo from the one I posted of her 10yo daughter.
According to this, there's an iconic photo of her son Trig and her, in which SOMEONE photoshopped it to mock her son's disability.

Linda Kellen Biegel is the official Democratic blogger for Alaska and one of Palin's biggest critics. She runs this blog:

Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=96031513434&1&index=2)

Poor Sarah Palin had a Democratic blogger photoshop an "iconic" picture of her and her son, and now she needs to quit her job in Government :(

- it's "iconic" because Sarah Palin's spokesperson says it's iconic.

- the "malicious desecration" of a photo was nothing more than a superimposed image of right-wing radio host Eddie Burke, who had released the names of anti-Palin demonstrators over the air and received a suspension from the radio station.

in august 2008, palin bemoaned hillary clinton's grievances about unfair media coverage as whining, which is bad for women candidates, and all women in politics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA15XU23kEc

"Fair or unfair, I think she does herself a disservice to even mention it. You gotta to plow through that. You have to know what you're getting into -- which, I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton, and to her experience and to her passion for changing the status quo also -- but when I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think, 'man that doesn't do us any good' -- women in politics, women in general wanting to progress this country, I don't think it bodes well for her, a statement like that. Because, again, fair or unfair, it is there, I think that's reality, and I think it's a given. I think people can just accept that she is going to be under the sharper microscope. So be it. I mean, work harder, prove yourself to an even greater degree that you're capable, that you're going to be the best candidate, and that of course is what she wants us to believe at this point. So it bothers me a little bit hearing her bring that attention to herself on that level."

Regardless of where that photo came from it just shows the way Palin's kids have been ripped by left wing bloggers and some media. Palin's kids are "fair game" as Arianna Huffington once stated. I can only imagine the outrage if any of this was done with Obama's kids.

actually, it was donny deutsch who made the "fair game" remark, and the criticism doesn't involve all of palin's chidren, but rather bristol palin's abstience campaign, which is being perceived and criticized as hypocritical.

what are you on about now? I think your the one who said she whined. I'm saying she quit. I think she has a martyr complex, actually I think the problem is her lack of empathy. I will never give her an inch on quitting the governor's job, it sets bad examples (quitting) and diminishes the office (if things get tough, split,, especially if you can cash in).

You've played a perfect part in whining for her, Palin and her defenders suggest she's suffered terribly-- her kids made fun of, her religion disrespected, her every gesture ridiculed.

So Sarah's had a tough life. But not tougher than the mother of a sick child without health insurance. Not tougher than people languishing in refugee camps, not tougher than most people on the planet, truthfully.

Losers who pushed Palin still feuding

July 13, 2009

BY JOE CONASON

Disaster is often followed by recrimination, a bitter aspect of human nature that can be observed among the Republicans as the Sarah Palin fiasco continues to unfold.

The Alaska governor's surprise resignation suddenly revived dormant feuding among campaign operatives and conservative media figures -- notably between Steve Schmidt, the former campaign manager, and Bill Kristol, the Weekly Standard editor and Fox News commentator.

In ordinary circumstances, all their bitchy backbiting, spinning and fabricating would be of little interest except as comic entertainment for political junkies. Who first called Palin a "diva"? Who insinuated that she might suffer from postpartum depression? Who cares now, except for these losers?

Plainly there is no reason why anyone should care, except for one small nagging concern. It is worth remembering that these are the same people who chose Palin, a manifestly unqualified and incompetent politician unable to string together a series of coherent sentences, as the potential presidential successor to a 72-year-old cancer survivor. So it would be refreshing and salubrious to see the perpetrators of that contemptuous and cynical tactic held accountable for endangering the country.

The latest eruptions from Kristol, Schmidt and all the lesser actors in the Republican reality show echo similar complaints from the closing days of the campaign last fall, when they were blaming each other for the obvious mistake of Palin's nomination. Back then, Schmidt and other top figures in the McCain orbit -- including lobbyists Rick Davis and Charles Black and speechwriter Mark Salter -- started to seek distance from the Wasilla phenomenon as soon as they realized that their ticket was going to lose the election, and that her nomination might well be counted among the reasons. In assigning responsibility for impending doom, these gentlemen criticized not only Palin herself but her cheerleaders on the right, the most vocal of whom had been Kristol.

Can't help you. I've been trying to figure this out myself. The only thing I can figure is, there are a fair (but dwindling) amount of people who identify with her and feel themselves to be good people, so if she is like them, she is good, and will represent their interests. Which is pretty human and understandable, but to me it's kind of, like, not looking at the big picture.

I don't hate Sarah Palin. I hate some of the ideas she represents, but as a person, no. I think she's said and done some pretty petty and inappropriate things though, and I don't think she's someone I'd choose as a friend any more than someone I'd choose as a political representative. Ironically, she'd probably make a really great community organiser, as I think when (if) she can focus on a single issue, she's probably very effective.

At the end of the day I think she made some really bad choices. First of all McCain should never have asked her to be his running mate - she was plainly not ready to be thrust onto the national stage. The problem is she did not seem to recognise this (probably because she'd never run up against her limitations before, being a big fish in a small pond) as if she had, she'd have had the sense to say "no". She makes a big deal of saying how if there's a door that's open a crack, she'll plow through it. But if you know your fire safety, you know that sometimes you need to feel the door first to see if it's hot, so you don't plunge into an inferno on the other side.

Palin Legal Donations May Have Violated Ethics Law, Report Finds

By Kimberly Kindy and Phillip Rucker

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

An independent investigator has determined that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) may have violated state ethics laws by soliciting and accepting private donations to pay $500,000 in legal debts.

A confidential report, obtained by The Washington Post on Tuesday, says Palin may have violated laws prohibiting elected officials from using their office for "personal gain" by raising money for her Alaska Fund Trust. Supporters established the fund to help defend herself against more than a dozen ethics complaints filed against her since she took office.

"There is little doubt that the Alaska Fund Trust will provide 'personal gain' to Governor Palin because the trust will provide a benefit to the governor's financial interest," Anchorage lawyer Thomas M. Daniel wrote in his nine-page report, dated July 14.

Palin is scheduled to leave office this weekend, about 18 months before the end of her first term.

Another Ethics Complaint Dismissed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 09-186

Another Ethics Complaint Dismissed

July 24, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – The Personnel Board has announced that another ethics complaint against Governor Sarah Palin has been dismissed.

The complaint, the sixth filed by Anchorage resident Andree McLeod, accused the governor of violating the Ethics Act by receiving her salary while campaigning for vice president. The accusation, lodged Monday, was dismissed as legally flawed and factually devoid of merit.

Governor Palin remained on duty, conducted state business, and communicated with her staff and her constituents. “Andree McLeod has failed to prevail on any of the ethics complaints she has filed against the governor,” said Mike Nizich, Palin’s chief of staff. “It appears her agenda is clear – she’s abusing the ethics laws to harass public officials.”

Are you trying to implicate Sarah Palin was some sort of a political dynamo who engaged Alaskans in Greatness? These ethics complaints are being generated by her very own standard, she put the laws into place.

Then she fucking quit! She's going to cash in and then she wants to continue to speak on behalf of candidates who need her to propel themselves into the world of everything that is wrong with politicians today.

She may be a lot of things to a lot of people, the one thing she is not is a representative of good political standing.

thank you, Governor Palin, for your service to the great State of Alaska.

"soaring through nature's finest show.
Denali, the great one, soaring under the midnight sun.
And then the extremes. In the winter time it's the frozen road
that is competing with the view of ice fogged frigid beauty,
the cold though, doesn't it split
the Cheechakos from the Sourdoughs?
And then in the summertime such extreme
summertime
about a hundred and fifty degrees hotter
than just some months ago, than
just some months from now,
with fireweed blooming
along the frost heaves and merciless rivers that are rushing
and carving
and reminding us that here,
Mother Nature wins.
It is as throughout all Alaska that big wild
good life teeming along the road that is
north to the future."
