Ari Gold
It took me a little while to finally settle on this. As a kid it was the Fonz, then Webster, then B.A. Baracus. Silvio Dante and Gob were both up there at one point. But I think I've finally selected a winner. I just watched Entourage seasons 1 through 5 again, and it's a wrap.

Cable vs. free TV charactors have to be on separate lists.
No surprise that the 1st 2 that get named are from HBO shows where they can cuss and do all kinds of ill shit.
I always loved the bratty kids who were too smart for their own good:
Wesley on Mr. Belvedere
Jason Bateman's charactor on Silver Spoons

Ari works way to hard for me to relate to.

Bunk was my favorite on that show :)
And as for the question itself, I don't know. If I were to choose I'd have to list several according to genre.

Sawyer from Lost
Admiral Adama from Battlestar Galactica
Saul Tigh from Battlestar Galactica

have you watched the whole show yet? i just finished season 3 and (SPOILER SPOILER BIG OL' SPOILER)i was relieved that they finally revealed that he was a cylon because a friend of mine accidentally spoiled that fact for me before i even started watching the show, and it was kind of annoying. now i don't have any more lingering spoilers, i don't think

Yeah, I forgot about Elaine. But, even then, that just reminds me what an awesome character George Costanza is. Regardless of gender, I don't think anybody's sitting around going, you know who the best tv show character ever is? Jo from Facts Of Life!
Just sayin.
That being said, I always preferred Rachel to Monica. I'm also a fan of Rebecca Howe, Sophia Petrillo, Lindsay Bluth, Karen Walker and Veronica Mars. I don't know if any of them are in contention for the crown though.

I am sick of Ari Gold, but it might be that I am just sick of Jeremy Piven.
Seinfeld wouldn't have worked without Elaine. Yes, George had better plot lines, but Elaine was the glue that made it work.
If we're talking about modern TV, I have to mention Willow Rosenberg. That girl could break your heart. Also any of the Geeks from Freaks and Geeks.

Yeah, even when the show was going off the rails Willow was still holding it down.
And Carla from Cheers.

so we've gone all this way without a mention of Homer Simpson. I would bet that he's the character that for most people on this board has made them laugh the most throughout their lives.

I sort of compartmentalized the whole Simpsons cast. They're like the Beatles, you have to leave them out of the discussion because they eclipse everything else.

agreed, i decided not to include them cos its too obvious, they are the best. and then if i was to include homer i would have to include at least 10 thers from that show.
having said that about top quality cartoons.
i dont believe anyone has mentioned ERIC CARTMAN yet? I watched cartman gets aids last night. "Are you sure", "I'm HIV Positive"

Groundskeeper Willie and Apu are quite possibly the best characters on the Simpsons, albeit in small doses mostly.
