Dear Adam, Adam and Michael,

My name is Andrew Jacobs and for better or worse, I’m one of the millions of white suburbanites who got into rap/hip hop music as a teenager in the mid ‘80s after seeing the video for “Fight For Your Right” on MTV. Now that I’m almost 39, I’m not one for writing fan letters and haven’t been for many, many years. However, I had planned on writing a letter to you for a while now and after hearing about Yauch’s medical situation (and I sincerely hope and pray that he makes a full and speedy recovery) and seeing the mailing address that Minton was kind enough to post on your official website’s message board, I decided that now was the time to sit my ass down and write to you.

Not only are you 3 gentlemen responsible for beginning my almost quarter of a century love affair with rap/hip hop, you have also been and remain my #1 favorite rap/hip hop group for that entire time. Now, the ultra politically correct among us would probably simply chalk that up to the fact that you’re white like me but I assure you that that is not the case. That isn’t to say that our similarities aren’t entirely a factor however. Like you, I’m a Jew who was born in New York and eventually migrated with my family to California when I was 6. Growing up in the ‘80s, there weren’t a whole lot of Jewish public figures that I could identify with. That is, until you guys came along. In addition to all of the GREAT music and films that you’ve given me and the rest of the world in the past quarter century, you helped to instill in me a pride in both being Jewish and being born in New York, a pride which I still heartily possess to this very day. Hundreds and hundreds of bands/artists have come and gone in my life but the Beastie Boys are one of the very few who have remained and endured. Not only are you guys the absolute best at what you do, you are also legends and icons of the Jewish community. In short, you guys RULE and always will.

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully Yours,

Andrew Jacobs
