it would be really cool if he gave Yauch a shout-out. Or if any other artists at the festivals gave love to MCA and the Beastie Boys. Kind of a solidarity thing.

Taking it to the next level, can anyone mass produce some MCA buttons to hand out at the festivals?

a la Chuck Daly fighting cancer, all NBA coaches wore a "CD" lapel during the playoffs this year...

I can't vouch for the validity of this, but I just came across it...

Check the comment at the bottom:

Actually the remaining 2 Beastie Boys have decided to make an appearance, just before Jay-Z. It's not on the schedule and not being announced, but is happening. I've been working on production over in Liberty State Park and that's the latest news.

:confused::confused::confused:

An "appearance" by Adam and Mike means they'll walk out, say a few words to the crowd, mention Yauch and thank everyone for the well wishes, and then intro Jay Z. I think somebody may be reading into this incorrectly.

Yauch isn't dead. My God people. He will probably come out too and say something and get a standing ovation for being strong. Cancer is very beatable especially if you have access to the best doctors money can buy.

q-tip, what you on the mic for?

Q-Tip is like your 9-year old child or relative putting on a performance for you: Although it is not too good, it is full of enthusiasm, so you can’t help but love it. Besides, he performed “Sucka N***a” and dedicated it to Adam Yauch, saying that the Beastie Boy was actually in the studio with him when he recorded it.

And though it was only visible on the big-screen, lead singer Karen O wore an armband that read "Get well MCA," a tribute to Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, who had to cancel All Points West when he announced that he was diagnosed with cancer.

Jay-Z's first festival in the States?

Jay-Z - who hails from the same New York borough as the rap trio - made sure Beastie Boys fans were not completely left out by bounding onstage and kicking off his set with the group's ode to their hometown.
He altered a line in the song to acknowledge the fact he was playing his first-ever festival in North America, replacing the lyrics, "Beastie Boys at the Garden", to "Jay-Z at All Points West", much to the delight of the crowd.
And, after running through his extensive catalogue of hits including Big Pimpin', Show Me What U Got, Encore and 99 Problems, Jay-Z gave a special shout out to Yauch.
He told the packed crowd, "I wanna dedicate this whole show to MCA - get well soon!"

My report

First off: No Ad-Rock or Mike D sightings (that I'm aware of)

But lots of BBoy and MCA love at the shows yesterday. The highlights were most definitely Q-Tip and Jay Z.

Q-tip said that the Beastie Boys were his family and that he was dedicating the show to Adam Yauch "the strongest mutha-fucker I know"! Q-Tips always been good peeps. Right before he said that he started beat boxing the beginning of "Get It Together" which got everyone all hyped but then he went into "sucka Ni**a" saying that the boys were in the studio with him when he was recording it. Tips set was actually amazing. Full backing band and his energy onstage is unbelievable! He blazed through a whole bunch of tribe classics and did his and phife's verses or let the audience do phifes (Check The Rhyme). So dope. Tip's an incredible performer. Plus its always a good sign when you can feature a key-tuarist in your band!

Jay-Z

Yeah. So I don't like Jay-Z. That being said I hate him. BUT...

I had never seen him live. Opening up with "No Sleep" was a very nice touch AND muthfucker had a ten piece band that was sick as all hell. I knew every song (guess not THAT surprising) and they sounded amazing. Good shit to dance around in the giant mud pit that the festival was. I really came away with a different appreciation for him. Still not a favorite but a definite must see live.

This maybe is a conversation for another thread BUT I really came away with how much it raises the stakes (especially live) for a hip-hop act to have a live band. Definitely something the Beasties brought into the evolution of the game (and perhaps that the Roots have perfected). The MC as front man is not new or even 100% necessary (Pharcyde was great too) but good god does it up the anty. Full horn sections making unbelievable fat riffs over sick beats made by multiple drummers. Shit gave me chills. Not saying there won't always be a place for 2 turntables and a microphone and a dope lyricist, but if your putting on a really big show then may as well put on a really BIG SHOW.

End of rant.

Show very enjoyable, despite almost being sucked into the inner bowels of hell through various mud portals.

its nice that he did it i suppose but its just so wrong. i wonder if its the only one he knew but he's tryiing to come across as down with the bboys, it smacks of trying to do the right thing but he fucked it right up, i mean if you are going to cover that song, get the whole fucking band involved , its not a piano and vocal track and it aint ever going to be.

he should have done "i dont know" or summat.

anyway thanks but no thanks, a few words would have sufficed

I assumed I'd hate this, I did not. It wasn't great, but it is it always nice to hear a different take on a classic song. You can the crowd yell BEASTIE BOYS, and they obviously loved.

This song would work really well as a "piano and vocals" cover if it were done more in the style of Little Richard, or Jerry Lee Lewis. Crazy piano hammering, and more of a yelping style in the singing. Ben Folds could do it.

Yeah- While I obviously do not think much of Coldplay or their cover, I had the same reaction, and I think you hit the nail on the head with your above comment.

In fact isn't it time for the piano man to give back some of the love the boys are always throwing his way. Goddammit Billy- give us a hot piano cover!
