Bob

and thursday

i don't think i'm going to fail (massachusetts has something like a 80-90% pass rate) but i swear to god, if i do, i'm gonna flip out, i've been studying for the past two months. harder towards the end than the beginning but still

i can't wait until i'm done with this dumb thing and the only things i have to worry about are my hopeless job prospects and student loan repaymens

I'm confused. Is this an exam to work in a bar? Or a lawyer type thing?

I can no way imagine it being the former but if it is, Boston must have the greatest bars in the world.

Bob
07-26-2009, 03:42 AM
it is in fact a big expensive pointless lawyer test, not a bartender's test. i don't get to be a lawyer unless i pass, although the way law school generally works, i'm supposed to have found a lawyer job already so i mean the timing of this test is kind of ridiculous but WHATEVER

it is aptly named, however - if i wasn't a hopeless alcoholic before, i probably am now, i've been drunk every night for the past two months except for maybe one or two nights

i've made a huge mistake

edit: though in my defense, i've spent most of my daylight hours sober, not that i've been awake for many of them

No it's not ridiculous bob, drinking and court go hand in hand.

Trust me you'll be pleasantly surprised.

good luck bob

so cant you start looking for work before you pass the bar? I'm sure they do summat like that in uk for legal dudes. but i may be talking out of my bum. I thought you would be able to be an apprentice type first and then when you pass the firm just take you on.

contrary to your place down here 30% pass similar exam...

Good luck to you Bob. It's stressful even if you're sure that you're good at taking tests because they are brutal days. Just remember that you're aiming for a "C", not an "A", so if you don't know a bunch of the questions don't freak out. When I took it there were two essays where I wrote less than a page and it felt funny but it was fine. I think you're going to a law school that doesn't do grades, so maybe the grade thing won't help you, but it helped me. :o

Try to do anything you can to de-stress during both evenings before the test. On the night between the two tests, for instance, I made early dinner plans with a friend who could be trusted to make me feel good and relax me.

yeah i really want to slow down and cool off but i paced myself quite poorly at the beginning and i have quite a bit of boning up to do before wednesday so...yeah i'm gonna have to find a magical balance between not burning out and putting the work in

it's annoying that the tests are back to back - i took a half day practice MBE (3 hours) and that shit was exhausting enough, but having to do another 3 hours after that? and then 6 hours of essays the next day, too? ughhhh

I was in the same boat. I'm a smarty pants so I never took the study seriously until about 10 days before the test. It's worth going over all the outlines in the days that are left, because it's not like you're going to be able to do much of anything else. But the night right before the test, please set everything aside and have a beer, take a shower, get a massage, whatever works.

I just want you to know that even if you feel like you're fucking up, don't panic. Don't think that if you had studied harder you wouldn't feel so pressed for time. You're meant to feel that way. It's like a bizarre frat hazing or something. But you can miss a ton of questions and still pass. On the morning of the multiple choice day, I panicked because I didn't finish before time ran out. That didn't usually happen to me on tests and it made me really nervous, but I guess I didn't need to answer those questions because I did pass. Avoid people who stress you out and center yourself during the lunch hours. Be completely selfish.

Address that right now! Set your alarm tomorrow morning so that you get up at a reasonable time, even if it means that you lose sleep tonight. Then you'll be tired enough to go to sleep earlier tomorrow night.

Adam
07-26-2009, 05:37 PM
Yeah, gotta agree sorting your sleep pattern out straight away.

I would avoid sex right now to - just because it'll be a big thing but how about this scenario:

You meet a hot girl a night before the test who wants to fuck your brains out but you know the test is a big thing - chance of oversleeping is high. Take her home? Put her off for the next night in which she might decide you're no longer worth it?

Women are cruel!

I think you'll be alright. you are pretty smart.

don't let any dorks stress you out at the test though. like people talking about how it's the 5th time they've taken it and yadda yadda. those people are idiots and you're not an idiot.

back when I had to take a teacher certification exam after college, there was a portion that I didn't study for at all (I think it was reading or something), other than glancing at a practice quiz in the hallway before the test. while out in that hallway, people were feverishly studying from giant study manuals and moaning about how this is the 3rd or 4th time they'd attempted the test. so I was like, "oh fuck", and got really psyched out.

I ended up kicking that test's ass, but I could've beat it up a little more if I hadn't let idiots stress me out.

the bar is considerably more difficult, obviously, but you'll be alright. maybe you should be drunk during the test! physical memory and all that. yup. that's the ticket.

hpdrifter
07-27-2009, 12:03 PM
Yeah, State dependent memory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State-dependent_memory). Have you been drunk while studying?

Anyway, good luck to you, Bobbo. I will be sending positive, relaxing vibes your way on Wednesday.

Now when you go out there tomorrow I want you to concentrate. It's going expect that you're nervous. You gotta show up cool as a cucumber and catch it off-guard. Stay away from it's right, it's got a mean right. Just duck and dodge and catch it on the chin with a strong left hook.

Bob
07-30-2009, 06:31 PM
today went much better, but i nearly had a heart attack at first. the first essay was so hard and obtuse that i literally stared at it for about 2 minutes without finding a single issue to write about. i nearly had a panic attack. fortunately, the other 9 essays were all much, much easier and i was able to write quickly and intelligently about all of the issues in them.

still, what a shitty way to start

so now we wait! until november! oh boy

Is it sad that I really wish I were in or near Boston and could take Bob out for a celebretory/congratulatory beer? It never ceases to surprise me how I can be so interested and even emotionally invested in the things that go on here. In some ways it's like an interactive TV show I might like. What happened in the latest episode of the BBMB around the water cooler and all that. I find myself telling my husband about stuff. Hey, today on the BBMB some guy posted that he found out his wife was cheating on him, that's fucked up!</waxing loseriffic>

That's quite an accomplishment, dude.

haha! I totally do the same thing if it's not super sensitive information. I find it slightly embarrassing though but that never stops me from telling my boyfriend.

Bob
07-30-2009, 07:55 PM
you know what though, i'm almost kind of sad that it's over. don't get me wrong, it sucked and i hated it but it's like for the past two months i've been doing basically nothing but sitting in my room and studying and now that it's over i'm not completely sure what to do with myself. like i look around my room and i see all my flashcards and my books and all the crap that i've allowed to negligently (duty breach causation dama-shit i need stop doing that now) pile up on the floor on account of being too busy to clean and i'm like "shit, now what do i do"

find a job i suppose. i forgot about that part.
