do you prefer the leather jacket obnoxious MCA from the LTI years or the more conscious MCA (CYH-present). MCA seems to have changed the most out of the 3 throughout the years and i was wondering which MCA people prefered

While I love any and all incarnations of Adam Yauch, I gotta go with old school MCA. He just did not give a fuck about anything. Love it.

For me, it has to be the latter! like a fine wine or an English cheddar! so much better as years go by! but the beasties are "organic" anyway, home-grown and straight to there roots everytime! Yauch, I'm wishing you all the best and hope to see you soon in the UK rockin the sure shot dude!

It's truly easy to forget how raw of a punk Yauch used to be considering how mature he's become. Those LTI videos were a shocking reminder. The contrast is nutty. Genuine Rude Boy styley.
While I am also a fan of each era, if I had to pick one it would be CYH era. It was that kinda morally confused Yauch; he was just starting to grab ahold of his spirituality, though his edge was still very present. The collision of the two mind-states seemed to manifest as, what I think, was the most passionate and serious creative musical stage of his career (which persisted through the IC era as well).

Which would explain the absolute genius of Jimmy James as well as Pass The Mic (which I'm pretty sure was an MCA beat considering the bad brains sample.)

paul's boutique MCA looks the coolest, but I love the fact even to this day he does and acts himself.
what other hip hop artist would have grey news reader hair, cords, desert boots and a grandad shirt and still be one of the top mc's of all time.
adrock has always been my favourite mc,but since TT5B i've liked mca as much.

This has the potential to turn into another 'bear I clept it' fiasco, so let me add a little input. Yes some of my guesses about the Too Many Rappers lyrics were wrong, but I assure you it's "Strange thought I know".
It would be a strange start in the game given he's from a well-to-do family, he's a punk rocker, he's a white rapper etc etc.
Instead it is actually a strange thought, that as old as he is, he may in fact still be rhyming years after his much younger adversaries. If we don't get these things right, how will anyone take us seriously?

i do agree, paul's boutique yauch seems to be like a mix of all his era's. he was waay involved in the production side of creating the album, still had his edge though he was a little less obnoxious, and was moving towards finding his spiritual side with the big blue bong in shake your rump

so true YoungRemy
in the LTI era MCA was low man on my BBOY totem pole-he reminded me of Bugar(?) from revenge of the nerds at the time. after meeting them for the 1st time on CYH tour, he quickly rose to the top. though i love them all dearly, MCA will alway be my fav simply because he is so down to earth, friendly and real.
PLEASE GET WELL FAST YAUCH!!!

My favourite Beastie Boys contradiction is shown in these two quotes from MCA. The first is from 3 Minute Rule:
"Yeah I smoke cheeba, it helps me with my brain, I might be a little dusted but I'm not insane"
And then from Alive:
"[I] don't smoke Cheeba, can't stand crack."
This outlines the change in ideals of MCA's personality from his youth to his adult-self. Not that im saying this shows a weakness in character or anything, because human nature is in itself contradictory. But its an amusing observation anyway. I'm sure MCA was concious of this contradiction when he wrote the latter lyric anyway, so its more of like a update on his personal preferences, showing how he had grown and matured since the days of Paul's Boutique.
Back on the topic of this tread though I think it's inane to choose which 'person stage' (to quote philosophy 101) of MCA is better. Both are essential to MCA and I would not do without his rebellious, hipster, stoner, drunken, woman obsessed youth or his intellectual, political, spiritual, responisible adulthood. I do however think that his rapping skills have diminished in the last few years, his verses on Two Many Rappers are slightly weaker then the other two Beasties so if I had to choose an MCA on rapping ability along I'd choose the 1989 MCA.

i feel the lyrics related to mca's drug use reflects my own history with the weed. his lyrics actually helped me realize truths and grow up

Any version of MCA is good for me. Any MCA is better than no MCA. I also like the shaved head look he has. Not the combed to the side style. He looks cooler with the shaved head look... hell, I think they all do. They should all shave their heads again.
MCA is cool now. He's still hilarious, has fun, and does his thing. He's what, 43? and still acts like a big kid. Gotta love it.
Now if you were to ask which version of AdRock do you like better then it'd definitely be the one where he's screaming, and actually rapping on the records and not mono tone where it sounds like he's just talking like now. I still love the guy, but he needs to go back to how he used to rap.
I just wish the BBoys didn't care when it came to rapping again. They have nothing to prove, and are just having fun. So why not bust a rhyme like "I was making records when you were sucking your mothers dick" that rhyme by MCA is so awesome and hilarious. Plus, songs like FFYR, and Boomin' Granny... why not play those again? Just have fun. They can say that they do not promote that shit anymore, and they are just playing it because it's what the fans want. So why not bust it out and play it again? I love the BBoys, but they should just worry about having fun and making fans happy again and givin' them what they want :D

I've always thought that the "Jimmy James" music video was the perfect mix of who they were and who they would become, what with the dancing women and the positive quasi-spiritual lyrics. But that might just be me.
And couldn't this collision of two mind-states be applied to the other two Boys as well? Adrock was selling sex rhymes by the pound, yet he was also saying that something's got to give.
That's why I love the Check Your Head era. It was the perfect combination of the past, present and future of the Beastie Boys.

Well, you won't have to worry about him having the combed to the side style anymore. Radiation destroys the hair permanately, so Yauch is gonna be bald for the rest of his life.

This is not an accurate statement. See below for two secondary sources on the subject (for both radiotherapy and chemotherapy):
