Nothing like a local paper for a ridiculous story.

i worked for a disability insurance company and i think morbid obesity was covered, if i recall correctly

the premiums were probably pretty expensive though, and i have no idea what the government does

I work for a home healthcare agency, and yes, the state provides funding for home healthcare of patients whose condition is obesity.

^ Read it and weep.

I should put this on my possible retirement options.

Oh damn! A hottie, Kettle Chips lover, AND a Take That fan? Dudes... I'll save you some time. Don't even read the article. She's taken. Life is so unfair.

her boyfriend is a chef, surely he knows how to cook some reasonably cheap and healthy food.

I say either put her in a zoo or let her die.

Yeah, benefits for all here. Unlike america you can get money after 6 months when losing your job. But generally you'll get far less than the 60% - its a set amount of about £60 a week (about $100).

Also because of free healthcare if you have an operation or health problems you can get disability allowance but what falls under a disability is very varied - like you say - being too fat.

It has good and bad points our system, just like americans. I really wish there was a middle ground of the american system and UK system. Its far too easy over here to never work and get paid by the government if that is the life you choose. But if I have to choose, I would choose a socialist society* over a capitalist society. (So canada maybe)

*not saying the UK are one fully defined but for simpleness sakes, we are SUPPOSED to be socialists (healthcare, benefits etc) - don't want to turn this thread political.
