I brought an old box of records out of the garage and found this 12" in there. It's pre-NWA Ice Cube with his group CIA (featuring production by Dr Dre). The whole thing is heavily Beastie Boys-inspired, but Ice Cube in particular sounds a lot like LTI-era Adrock (mostly on Ill-Legal).

Look for the old CD "Rap Street 16 songs" It was a comp CD from around 91. I still have it just for those old CIA tracks. It also has some unreleased Comptons Most Wanted, ect. It has Comptons Most Wanted on the cover. It has all of those CIA's songs, and they are all Beastie rip off types. No killing cops and being hard core. I can picture Ice Cube in a pink Polo with the collar up and his curl rappin' like the boys!

Ha, when I was in high school I used to tape Mixula's Masterpiece (rap radio show) when I lived in Sacramento back in the day. He used to play "My Posse". I have old tapes of those shows. Cube's first project. It's obviously from that era, heavily influenced by Run DMC and Beasties. Plus with the samples, that's Dre producing and he obviously loves Beasties, he samples them all the time.
Cube's voice was always instantly recognizable. The next I remember hearing from him was "Gangsta Gangsta".
Yeah it's interesting that the song is called "My Posse", but the lyrics have nothing about gang life, it's all about you and your boys chasing girls. But you have to admit the gangster image was a gimmick that worked out nicely for Cube financially. I mean, those NWA guys were from the hood, but none of them were real gangsters, except maybe Easy who sold dope.

For info Ill-legal samples five Beastie songs: The New Style, Slow and Low, Posse In Effect, Hold It Now and She's Crafty

Wow! That's incredible. They were totally going for the LTI-theme.
Thanks, mickill!

Now that I think about it, it was "Dope Man" the next time I heard Cube. On that same show. "Gangsta Gangsta" came later.

Whoa.... this is crazy, I've never heard someone try to jock off the beasties style so hard... probably why this group didn't succeed. Also, Its interesting to heard Dre produce something with such an old school "boom bap" kinda feel, didn't know he had it in him.

Well Dre was doing Wreckin Cru back in '84 so he's basically been at it as long as the Beasties... it's LA though, so it was a little bit of a different style than in New York... far as LA hip hop, Dre's the man. top of the heap.
