Let my good friend Bill Maher (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/31/bill-maher-issues-warning_n_249193.html) break it down for you.

Why bother to acknowledge the "birthers" in the first place? By listening to them, you are lending the idiots credibility.

What do they do, all subscribe to "Political Jokes Monthly" or something?
You know shit's going bad when you're going back to the campaign for topics to joke about in support of Obama.

Maybe next week they'll come up with a "Boy, that McCain's really old, huh?" joke.

rob, the birther movement is full of wingnut wackos, no?

stuff like this and sarah palin can only serve as fodder for these guys.

honestly, Stewart's take pretty much sums up how absurd the notion is to fake a birth certificate so that this Chosen One Golden Child could go on to take over the good ol' US of A.

the movement is absurd and these guys do what they do.

unless you believe Obama wasn't born in Hawaii?

unfortunately the movement has already gained traction, and it's not the Mahers, Stewarts, or Colberts digging up jokes to make Obama look good.

they are responding to real nutjobs who "want their country back" and have made an absolute laughing stock of themselves.

I leave this thread with this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYQr2a4vqqg), Ann Coulter appearing on "the Liberal on Fox" program...

Did you watch the segment? He explains why you must acknowledge ridiculous shit like that (John Kerry not responding to the Swift Boat ads did him harm in 2004). There's a difference between acknowledging them, and acknowledging them and ridiculing them through logic and facts until their "movement" dies off. Doing nothing won't make them shut up, it'll just make them grow more.

Yes, I did in fact click on the link and watch the video. And I watched an intelligent man waste five minutes of his time. All anyone has to do to shut these "birthers" up is present the birth certificate, which has been done. If these "birthers" can't move past being proven wrong, that's their problem. Anyone with one iota of intelligence will not waste their time listening to whatever counterpoint they can muster. The only people I see being riled up by this are people terrified that their golden boy can't handle these bizarre negative campaigns.

I will agree though, that when it comes to much more important political attacks, that ignoring the attack will not make it go away. This "birther" movement is retarded and doesn't deserve two seconds of anyone's time.

These people don't really care about his birth certificate. They're racist fucks. For some reason they think this is a socially-acceptable way to express that. They don't dislike Obama because he's black. They dislike him because maybe he's not really an american.

They're idiots.
A co-worker of mine still subscribes to the "birth certificate" theory ever since he heard about it during the campaign.
He also personally investigates UFO sightings in the NY-NJ area in his spare time.
He also believed back in 2008 that this pic (http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/bigfoot1.jpg) of a reportedly captured Bigfoot was real.
He's universally known in my company as an idiot.

stuff like this and sarah palin can only serve as fodder for these guys.

I dismissed the entire debate in about two seconds back during the camapign. This is the first thing I've heard about it since.
It seems very odd that this ridicculousness gained national attention back then.
It's even more odd that someone is willing to entertain it again.
It's even odder still that all your talking head pundits, (like the sheep that they are) are choosing to entertain the story again.

I'm left with only one conclusion. It must be getting hard to continue to find things to support Obama, so they're going back to shit that happened months ago.

Perhaps there's something more to this story that I don't know about?
This thread is as much as I've read on it.

"They" are the political satirists like Stewart and Colbert and Maher, and the like.

YoungRemy

no, it's the other way around Rob! it's the birther movement that is growing crazier and crazier by the day... it's not the talking heads drawing straws.

it's the american public (albeit fringe) that is instigating this movement, not the sheep behind the cameras.

but I see what you are saying.

to me, they are the same as the "George Bush didn't win the election" and the "9/11 was an inside job" and the "USA faked the moon landing" fringe...

to me, they are the same as the "George Bush didn't win the election"

Well, Bush DID get less votes and the Supreme Court appointment of Bush (therefore stopping the Florida re-count before it was completed) will forever raise doubts over whether Bush legitimately won the 2000 election. I know some believe there was a conspiracy with the 2004 election, but I'm not sure if there was nearly enough material to substantiate that claim. You're spot on with the other analogies, tho.

I find it baffling that people are talking about this so much. This isn't even an issue, at all. It's not "spreading like wildfire" and sky isn't falling. He released the birth certificate, now let's be done with it. There's no need to listen to "birthers" anymore.

"Birth Certificate" vs. The "Certificate of Live Birth" is the central key argument for the "birther" movement.

nobody said it was spreading like wildfire, either.

I saw on the HuffPost that a 'new' birth certificate has been uncovered, which points to him being born in Africa. And the birthers are going nuts with it.

Never mind that its a poor forgery and contains MANY fundamental errors.

I'd link you but I can't be bothered.

Do your own damn research.

Palin going Birther?

transcript from the interview yesterday with radio host Rusty Humphries

HUMPHRIES: Sarah Palin here on the Rusty Humphries Show. One of the questions Jason asks is would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?

PALIN: I think the public rightly is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue because I think there are enough members of the electorate that still want answers.

HUMPHRIES: Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?

PALIN: I think it’s a fair question just like I think past associations and past voting records. All of that is fair game. You know, I’ve got to tell you too, I think our campaign, the McCain-Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were, and perhaps what their future plans were, and I don’t think that was fair to voters to not have done our job as candidates and a campaign to bring to light a lot of things that now we’re seeing manifest in the administration.

HUMPHRIES: I mean, truly if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama’s past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?

PALIN: Hey, you know, that’s a great point. And that weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son, and a lot of people that went "Well, you need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he’s your kid," which we have done, but yeah, so maybe we can reverse that, and use the same [inaudible] thinking on the other one.

Palin really is a pathetic woman who will say or do anything to please her far right-wing crazy base.

Maybe her and Lou Dobbs will be running mates in 2012.
