I'll be trying out for NYPD. My mind is set, exams are in october but most likely I'll be taking them early to get my foot in the door sooner.
There's many complaints about cops and whatnot, I won't be one of the abusive ones everyone complains about. You have to be awfully damn stupid if you get thrown in the can by me.
I only plan being a regular cop for about 2 years or so and then I want to venture into emergency services.
This is one of the hardest choices I've made, I might not even get in because of the psych evaluation, I'm pretty far out there and a few of my coworkers have failed that part as well so, who knows.
I've just got to start thinking about my future and having something with benefits.
I know I'll be one of the good ones.
is there an age limit for joining? i was looking at the boston police department (i don't remember why) and i think it said you needed to be under 24 to take the cadet exam. or is the cadet exam something else?
in fact, maybe it said over 24. i don't remember.

Yeah there is. 35 is the age limit and I'm over but my military time credits so I can join at a later age.
I think Boston PD is 35 as well.

yeah you did. It's being a pig though man. Many people despise pigs and I was one of them that did.
I figure that if I'm so pissed off about them, why don't I become one so that I could be one less to complain about.
Off topic- stop by anytime man. Sunnyside was a great fucking move. I love this place. I'm still unpacking right now though....ARRRRGGGHHH!!
I know the cops here have to be over 21 but I'm sure there is old fuckers joining all the time but they are british cops so y'know - just racist.
oh, and good luck

I'd make a good cop. And I mean, a cop who is good. Not someone who is good at being a bad cop.

the main question is- what does a group of good people think about this move?
As I've said, I don't even want to do foot patrol and nit picking bitch shit but I have to and I still won't be all hardcore about it. The way I see it is if you want to make a centerpiece of yourself and if you do it in an offensive way, offensive enough to make everyone around disgusted- people need to learn how to ignore harder.
Call me only when you think shit might blow up or if you think artillery is going to drop.

So great, that means a sequel of 'Robocock' will be cumming out in 3-D as well.
They'd better have plated 3-D glasses for that one.

I've been thinking about my future too and career directions. Law enforcement was one I also thought about but I don't think I'd want to be a cop. Do you know whether there are other roles in this field for someone like me?
Also, I think this is a great move for you. Just be careful and don't get shot.

Right on Eric. I hope that works out for you.
There are bad apples in every bunch. Being a police officer is a tough and cops really get a bad rep. for having to deal with as much crap as they do.

I'd rather have your job but FDNY only hires every 4 years and the last wave was in 07.
Emergency services covers tons of areas though. I'm sure I'll keep busy.

Paramedic maybe? If you go to your home state PD website, you'll see quite a few non-cop jobs.
I'm not worried about getting shot. I believe if it's my time to go the it's my time to go, whether on the job or not.

I remember a few western restaurants such as KFC and McDonalds got bombed while I was over there.
Kuwait has Applebees, Chilis, Johnny Corianos, a double decker BK, kfc and a few others right on Gulf Road.

What makes you attracted to it?
Some people in law enforcement are social workers or probation/parole officers. I don't have any idea whether it's a bad time to get into that though--given how hard local government have been hit by budget cuts.

I think the idea of some excitement, being exposed to new things, helping people.
I don't know, I am thinking lots of things. Maybe nursing as well. I just need a change, I've been working in an office doing the same 8-5 M-F shit since I was 18. The most exciting thing that happens for me at work usually is when someone has leftovers from a meeting and they put them in the lunch room to share.

I always wanted to be a cop just so I can say to a perp, "Perhaps a ride downtown will refresh your memory"
All the rest of it seems unseemly.

HP, check out the exciting field of dispatching. Its not a bad gig from what I've heard and you can make some good coin. Part of a team, basica medical over the phone, directing resources, etc.

I want to be a cop, but a bad cop, who plays by his own rules . . . .
