Not like off a ladder.
I'm in the process of stepping down to a less stressful position in the company I work for. I have never done this before and was wonder if any of you guys have ever done this before. Did you become an outcast? Were you forced out of the company? Any advice?

i wouldn't really call it "stepping down" because in my eyes i am achieving far, far more. stepping down suggest downgrading.
i used to work in higher education and was set to take a promotion that would pay me way, waaay more than i earn now and come with significant benefits (holiday, pension, regular pay increments etc). i turned that down to move to a lower paid job in the arts, no pension, poorer holiday, etc. but i was miserable in my last job. it wasn't more stressful, it was just.. shit. i didn't care one iota about what i spent doing at that desk five days a week. it was uninspiring, bureaucratic and, more importantly, really, really, really fucking boring.
i am so much happier now. sure i don't have as much money to play around with at the end of the month but fuck it. go for whatever works for you. it's your happiness (and sanity) at the end of the day.

sorry, i meant is someone doing/gonna be doing your old job now?
id be wary, but then again, businesses are consolidating a lot.. if you gut is telling you something, there may very well be something to it. i try to go with my gut and it doesnt fail me too often
personally id try to prepare as though i had already lost the job, but be really careful to not let that affect my work persona
sorry if that all sounds obvious to you
