(I'm just pasting my half of a chat I just had. If anyone can think of any good speculation, I'd love to hear it.)
So my last job let me go a little over a year ago (there wasn't enough work for me anymore), then, out of the blue, they started a retirement account for me at the end of last year with almost $3000 in it
I asked about it and never got a real answer, so I figured it was for a tax write off or something
So I cashed it out -- even after the penalties and taxes, a nice chunk of change
I just got notice in the mail that they deposited ANOTHER $3000 in it a week or so ago
Nice, but -- what the hell?
Can you think of any reason why a former employer would do that?
They definitely don't owe me anything, and they gave me two months' pay when they let me go, so...
I wrote to the secretary to ask if it was a mistake (maybe they have some automatic deposit going or something) and I still haven't heard back

Gift horse, yeah... it's just kind of weird. It's like an old girlfriend that keeps popping back up and you really kinda want to forget.
then again, on that last check, I took some friends out for wickedly good sushi. We got this chef's special special special select, and one piece was like a giant shrimp head, and you turned it over and picked out this meat that could've been brains, for all I know, and it was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

How long did you work there? Perhaps they're trying to prevent you from filing unemployment? That doesn't exactly explain the second deposit, though...

Three years. I've been working at my new job for a little over a year. Never filed for unemployment.

Something just occured to me in 92' I worked for a telcom that had a "profit based" performance bonus..it was calculated every 1/4 but paid out at fiscal year end...I was only there for 9 months or so...so 3 months after I was done I got cheque for a few hundred bones...that's all that comes to me...

That would make a certain amount of sense, but... before I was even hired I had asked my friend if they matched contributions to the 401k and he laughed at me.
So, for three years I worked there, and got only salary and cash bonuses. Half a year after I was fired, they open a retirement fund for me. Half a year after that, another contribution.
Weird.
Sushi, anyone? Give me about four weeks. :D

Whatever you want.
Like I said, just give me about four weeks. I think that's how long it took last time.

Yeah, but if your former job gives you an apron, you'll have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

they are laundering drug money through your retirement fund.

Okay -- now it's making sense.
Thanks!
Spend all the money on getting some kind of degree.
I read an article once about some drug dealer who made his own stuff, but he gave all his profits to relatives to get college degrees. The police could confiscate his money when he eventually went to jail, but they couldn't revoke the degrees, and now his nieces etc. have nice jobs because of that free money.
I figure even if they back out and realize it was a Monopoly-esque banking error, they can't take repo knowledge.
