You had an epiphany that the overwhelming bulk of bands today are clueless and tone deaf. It was sort of a sucky song at the time compared to all the fucking great music then.
Today, what was lame then, it shames the current crop of scaredy cat bands afraid of their own shadows.

I think I get what you're saying because I was disappointed in that album and I had figured out that the band was about dead. We knew that they couldn't stand each other and they weren't comfortable with their level of success after the Who tour. Today I'd probably think "good for them getting a pile of money to play a festival" but I was a judgmental bitch back then. In retrospect, that album isn't dreadful it's just not as good as other Clash albums.
I always liked that video though, because it was more fresh than much of the stuff on MTV at the time. I liked the video for This is Radio Clash better but it wasn't played often. Most videos were perfectly horrible but I would be glued to the TV waiting for hours to see a good one.

Sounds like my experiences exactly. Back then I lived in Canada and the only good TV show that played videos was The New Music. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0194617/). Friday night videos was around I think but there was
no MTV or Much Music available on Canadian cable television.

They had this ad in theaters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tBop3IKBdQ) when I went to London in the 90's, just before the movie started, it riled up the crowd more than the movie I saw... I think it was the Awakening.
This clip from Rude Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9eLeZS9OeY&feature=related) just kicks some serious ass, it reminds me of being drunk for years at a time. That's Sham 69 lead singer Jimmy Pursey helping out.

whenever that song came out, some random guy [friends w/ my roommate] was hanging out at my apt. The roommate put the Clash on, Casbah eventualy come on and the dude perks up, "oh shit, the will smith song!"
But nothing beats the time somebody leaned over during a Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse show and asked "Which one's Crazy Horse?"
Oh well. Everybody makes mistakes. Including Will Smith.
