View Full Version : I think photogenic people are more confident than non photogenic people

there's this girl I know who is not super hot in real life...kinda pasty and has bad hair, wears ill-fitting clothes.

however, in pictures, she's an absolute doll! it's very strange. she's just walking around thinking she's hot shit I guess. she's literally brimming over with confidence at all times.

I dunno, I can take a good picture, but 90% of the time I look uncomfortable and/or terrified and/or like a whale. therefore, even if I look in the mirror and say, "oh, hello there, lookin' good hot stuff" *wink*, I see pictures later and I'm like, "ew".

anyway, be careful out there, you photogenic people, you might actually be kinda busted in real life.

I actually feel more confident when I'm very drunk and making a complete dick ofmyself than trying to look good for photos(y)

Depending on how my day is going, i generally think i'm not too bad looking-like i said, that can change a lot. some days i'm a total moose, others i'm okay-that's as good as i go in my opinion. but it is one of my pet hates that i look so utterly hideous in photos. i guess i should just get over it though-it could be worse.

and what makes a word gay

i have maybe two or three photos of myself in which i actually think i look good and that's only because people have told me i look good in them (not that i completely trust them)

i just don't have a very natural ability to smile attractively on cue. like if someone points a camera at me and says "smile!" i do this awful toothy crooked thing and i mean for all i know i look like that all the time but i assume i don't because it really does look awful and i can't imagine anyone wanting to be around someone who looks like that in their natural environment (i've literally had a good friend delete a photo because i looked so bad in it, and i trust him on that, because he really is a very good friend, also he was far too drunk to lie to me)

Photogenia (?) has nothing to do with confidence. How could it? When you get your picture taken there's no soul that comes through, the result is all in the realm of the physical world. Light, shadow, angles....It's all bone structure, I think. Dorothy you look great in pictures, like a movie star.

The older the pictures get, the better I look in them. The worst photos will always be the most recent ones. Funny how that works, I can't figure it out.

no it's true, I spend most of my time on nights out deleting myself from photos on friends digital cameras.

I just realized, this is how I look in photos so maybe it all works in reverse! (y)

and kind of contradicting myself, the best photos of people are when theyre not posing

I don't like photos of my. It's taken me all this time post a picture here.

But I also think that the best photos are the non posing ones. So I sort of end up not posing surrounded by people posing, or just forcing a pose.

Couldn't disagree more.

Also, I hate pictures of myself. My nose is crooked to the left and my mouth is crooked to the right. Most of the time I look like I've had a stroke.

I think maybe the confidence allows the person to relax in front of the camera so they look more natural.

it's strange, this girl looks so much thinner in pictures too...I don't know how that even works. I like her, I don't hate her, I was just looking at her facebook photos and being like, "wowee zowee, she looks beautiful!" and I don't know anyone like that. most of my friends are rarely captured on film looking as cute as they do in real life.

and thanks for the compliment nuzz, it's just my eyebrows, they're lucky. I have plenty of crappy photos of me, believe it. my profile is awful.

I only look good in pictures where I'm asked to look directly into the camera and smile and subsequently am forced to hold that smile while the person taking the picture spends a good 20 to 30 seconds figuring out how their camera works.

I've been told many times that I look different in every photo. I think I've come to terms with the fact that I have a morphing face.

I am the same way. And I always wonder why I was so hard on myself because I looked kind of cute.

Then a new picture is taken and I think "eh, I definitely don't look my best here". Rinse & Repeat.

I've become more comfortable with photos of myself over the years. I think I look better now than I did a while back. Better attitude, better hair, better clothes...and I actually know how to do my makeup now. That helps.

"I think photogenic people are more confident than non photogenic people"

Does this theory hold for photos of one's private parts as well ;)

Possible hypotheses that can be tested experimentally in my laboratory:

1) Confident people are objectively better looking (and look better in 2D photographs) than people who are less confident.

2) If you increase a person's general confidence they look better in a 2D photograph compared to a photograph taken before the confidence boost procedure.

3) Physically attractive people are more confident than physically unattractive people and this explains any association between confidence and photo quality.

4) Healthy people are more confident, attractive and look better in photos than unhealthy people.

5) Fertile people are more confident, attractive, and healthy than infertile people.

By the way I am certain that 2D photography cannot fully capture 'attractiveness'.
