View Full Version : A new take on an old thought

For a period of time following the 1998 - 1999 golden age it looked like we'd never hear from the band again. In fact, people even started speculating that MCA wasn't interested in the music thing any more, a perspective that was drawn in part from the nonchalant way he appeared during performances such as Coachella, and in part from the sheer scope of their inactivity as a group during the hiatus.

The Pageant tour sort of put paid to that, though. He was enjoying it every bit as much as the other guys, it seemed. Then the reports about the early Gala shows said he visibly wasn't. Maybe there were personal factors affecting him, or maybe it was BS from a fan's perspective. I guess we'll never know. Nerves? Nah, not him, surely?

You hear lots about how distant and withdrawn he can look on stage. Those of us who know and expect it, know that this is his thing in recent years. 'Doing the Yauch'. Although it wasn't always that way; maybe age and humility had mellowed him. I think he's plenty into it, in his own way.

Right now Adam Yauch is working probably harder than ever to get back into that performing state. Going through torture to be back in the space for an album release, and another inevitable tour.

He's always been the one with the most demanding outside interests, which his bandmates seem to wholeheartedly support. He's always seemed like any minute he could just decide to take up something else, and call it quits on music. For this reason, it has been suggested that the existence of the band hinges on his interest in continuing.

I think it's pretty cool that we now know he's into it. That he's willing to put himself through hell with the intention of carrying on, for our benefit. Even if it's for one more tour, it's a real nice way of proving that no matter how convincingly he's 'Doing the Yauch', chances are he's where he wants to be, when he's up on stage.

Onya, Adam.

I always thought that he came off as the most passionate guy about the band. Listening to the commentaries on the criterion collection/concert dvd/remastered albums, he always seemed to be the guy who wanted to talk about the music or video. Mike D and Adrock usually seem like they dont give a fuck. MCA was always the guy to me who came across as the bridge between the group and the fans. Like the fact that he's the only one who posts on the message board here.

Great post.(y)

Speaks a collective mind, I think.

Yauch is just about as real as it gets.

Great insight! I have to say it's hard for me to comprehend that so much time has passed between HN and now. People were commenting on how mature they became around HN's release in 1998. Now, it's 11 years later, and MCA is 45 years old, right? It's funny that only 2 spoken word albums (counting HSC) have been released since '98. I hope they continue recording music, and a HSC Part 2 sees the light of day in the next couple years. He's still the coolest 45 year old I know!

Furthermore, I must say that he doing the Yauch can also be perhaps even more energetic than the other two. When I saw them at the Mix Up tour he was the one of them who tried to give the audience the most entrainment. So even though he is not jumping around like in the cyh days, he is still doing his thing. It would be strange if his thing was the same as it was in 92'.

Really? Considering the anonymous nature of a messageboard, how would anyone know that?
