but here goes.
I want to make music. *room for laughter*
I can sort of play a guitar (bass, really), can sort of play the drums, and I have a great sense of rhythm (for someone with no talent). I really want to make some beats, essentially. A friend of mine produces drum & bass, has a little mixing board and a synth thingie (technical, scientific terminology here). I saw this Roland something or other on TV this morning. Sampler and all that. I think that kind of thing I want. I have an old pc that I might reformat and just use to make loops and shit. I used audacity to make a looped-up beat of In the Fade. It was fun to freestyle over, even if it degenerated into a rap about spoonfeeding incapaciated relatives in a nursing home.
And those old BBMB rap battle threads (which are by no means a barometer of my writing skills) have me writing rhymes again. Most of it's shit, but I find that the more you write, the more nuggets of quality you come across, over time.
I'm under no illusions. I just want to make music for myself. "Why not, Brighty?".
If you guys can recommend some software/hardware I'd be thankful. I fucked about with Fruity Loops ages ago, but I had no sampler/mixer and such. I need a creative outlet that can let out shit. So if you could school me on what would get me started (and yes I'm starting late but there's a shitload in the brain so it shouldn't be no thing).

That is very cool -- go for it man. I wish I had some musical talent to help you out. I have been analysing wave forms of the human voice lately using Audacity. It is free and has settings to record and alter sound. However there is other software out there that musicians and engineers probably prefer (anyone know which is best?). Below is the link to Audacity (free is nice yall):

get yourself a copy of ableton live. its got loads of instruments in it, you can import samples, import tracks and make loops ,plug your own equipment in and record what you play and its a piece of piss to use. one day on the demos and you'll be able to produce something. i think version8 is out now but any of the old versions will do if its just for getting started.
download.com should have something or have a butchers on the ableton site
more power to your elbow
i had my first play with two vinyls and a mixer the other night. just mixing dnb shit but i really wanted to just mix some good hip hop (wasn't available). i was loving it. i suck hard at it but it made me wanna get better.
my contribution to this thread is great.

Sounds great. It sounds ghetto, but my old media software could record any sound from the web and keep it as an mp3. Then I'd fuck about with it in audacity. Sort of like 'taping' samples off the web. That's a pretty common feature of shit like this?
Cheers for the help.

Propellorhead Reason is a good program for beginners. everything you need is available right in front of you, and it's visual design is set-up in a physical nature, therefore it's easier to find your way around if you're already a bit familiar with hardware. you've got a drum programmer, a mixer, effects sends, a sample chopping mechanism, MIDI interface, synth patches, virtual instruments, etc. it's not free, persay, but you can find a cracked version of 'reason adapted' with ease. plus, anyone you may know who has an Mbox could prolly hook it up. a copy of reason adapted comes with every mbox and it offers i think 3 installs with each registration number.
if you think you may get more serious over time about making music, though, it's a good idea to start with something a little more complicated, like protools LE (free version). that way you won't eventually outgrow your workstation and have to re-learn a whole new one later.
good luck. it's a wonderful journey making music. (y)

dumb as fuck, indeed.
I use fruity loops for making basicish beats and use sony acid pro to bring it together with acapellas. I use no hardware, although I am planning on investing in some (http://beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=92324).
When I started out I had little to no knowledge, other than what I had learnt from hearing djs and producers talk and google. But I did have a little help from a producer I know who is a bit more professional.
