Ava was at school for her 2nd day of first grade. No American flag there today, or yesterday. No state flag either.

No computers.

No rug on the floor.

Some books.

I live in a house I can’t afford, so my girl can go to a good public school. We were told on the day before the first day of 1st grade, that the school administration had no idea these students would be here. We were told a teacher would be assigned within 20 days. Today 4 classes had computers, lessons, PE, art etc …. My girl had a vacant storage room, coloring and games, until further notice.

Well, I am told it will be great, after the red tape…..

I would laugh if it was your girl, but I feel like I should move to a new state.

FYI, we registered for school over 5 months ago.

Wow, I totally felt bad for you until I read that. So the only reason it's not funny is because you're going through it? Way to garner some sympathy there, fella.

I felt I needed to follow up. It did go down, just as I said. SO Thursday was the first day, and I emailed offering my help and/or money. I also asked, what is going on and when. I got a reply … instead of talking about it, here it is…

You have very good questions and I will answer what I can. I am at home and do not have a copy of the schedule with me so I cannot answer everything. Lunch is from 11:45 to 12:15 everyday but Wednesday. I do not know the Wednesday schedule. We will have library tomorrow afternoon so I know that there will be no PE tomorrow. I think that PE will be on Monday but I am not certain. I do appreciate your desire to send appropriate shoes. That does not always happen with every child.

Please forgive me for the sketchy information I have provided parents. I have not had much time to think beyond the next day (sometimes the next hour) and my focus has had to be on being prepared for the students during their school day. Recess, lunch, and duty schedules were only finalized today, however, and so all teachers are all just getting some of this info themselves. Your questions are good ones and I really do need to get this information out to all parents. I will do my best to get a letter on my web page this weekend.

I hope that Ava had a good first day. She was a good listener and committed participant today and was a delight to have in class.

Thank you for your offer of help. I do appreciate parent volunteers, and maybe next week there will be something you could do.

So, I decided to be patient and take what I get, also sneak into the classroom unannounced the following Friday, the 7th day of school. When I saw what was happening I was content, but I was sad that 4 other first grade classrooms were a 10 and my daughter’s was a 5.

Finally, they did hire a new teacher that started the following Monday and we had meet the teacher on Wednesday. The classroom set up itself was still a 5 but I was told it would be brought up like the others within 14 days. Well see…

And the best part is the new teacher will be talking a leave of absence early December returning in May do to pregnancy. The funny thing is all the moms are pissed at this. How hard the ladies worked not to be discriminated against while they were pregnant, and now they think this hire is bullshit..

Finally take 2…. I feel ok, but can not count on this school to educate my girl; I can tell I will have to work on it myself.

also, I would not have laughed if it was your girl, this originaly was a ten beer post...

What parent doesn't visit their child's new school waaay before sending their kid there?

What 1st grade classroom needs computers?

I mean there are "some" books. Sounds like all she needs is a couple crayons and a abacus and she'll be straight.

this is the craziest thing I've ever read.

also, it's kind of weird to refer to your daughter as "my girl", I kept reading it as if it was your girlfriend. strange strange.

The kind that drinks ten beers at the computer at night, I guess.

My oldest girl … Ava went to kindergarten at this school last year. I volunteered and taught at the school once a week last year. I pre-registered for first grade the last day of kindergarten, 3 months in advance.

There is an official day, the day before the first day of school, where everybody finds out what class and teacher they have. On that day I found out we had no teacher.

I do drink beer, my guess is on average 2 time a week.

There was no flags until the 3rd day of school. There was an American flag on the 3rd day. On the 2nd day, Ava told me that the teacher told her to imagine a flag.

FYI … I call my wife Mom, I guess because she is the mother of my children and I call my 2 girls my girls .. Anyone reading bad things into this is the sick one.

The rug… well all the kids sit on a rug in the other class for what is called circle time where they talk together, we had no rug, we do now.

SO for what ever it is worth, I taught in the classroom, coached the soccer team and provide for my family so my wife can stay home and take care of my other kid, now 1 year old.

I realize I leave an alternative life style. I decided fuck this mainstream shit, I am going to get married at 26, have some kids, raise a family and be with the same lady for 14 years, while drinking beer. If you don’t like it …then hey fuck you.

My Girls … Ava and Lea & My Wife all say high. We just got back from the amusement park where we road a roller coaster and all kinds of shit, now I am going to start cooking my T-bone steaks for my family and guest. I might even have a few beers.

Yeah that sounds pretty alternative alright.

My lifestyle involves things like monogamy, eating meals at the table, and doing this thing where we teach our kids stuff. We live in a modest home. No flags. One room has an area rug. After getting married at a young age (28), we decided we wanted to raise our kids in a neighborhood with other like-minded alternative lifestyle people.

What he is really saying is... He drinks 2 twelve-packs on average 2 times a week. Sometimes while eating T-bone steaks with his guest.

If you don’t like it… Then hey, fuck you.

Dear abbott, I don't think anyone meant any offence, but your posts are very confusing and seem to focus more on the fact your daughter's new school has no rug and no flag, even though the lack of teachers or lessons in my mind is of greater concern. I like drinking beer too. Sometimes I drink enough beer that I get drunk. I have also drunk beer at the computer, so I can empathise with that part of your alternative lifestyle. I do not have children however, so in these matters I have no expertise. I hope the rug and flag arrive soon.

Thinking back about why I made this post... I was not happy about the way things were going at school, but I had continued to say nothing but positive things to the administration and offering my help. The truth is I wanted to give them all a piece of my mind and let them know I thought they were losers.

So holding back was not easy and I used this post to release a little frustration.

Thanks for listening, thanks for the feedback, and I got nothing but love for you all.

I believe this is my last post on this thread. Ava loves her class, and I need to be thankful for what I got. However, I am using this as leverage to make sure I get the teacher I want next year.

As far as where I live.... I live where my tax dollars went to put a picture of our Governor in Time Square. I live were the federal government says, yes your governor is guilty of pay to play scams, but we wont prosecute now, but maybe we will later My guess when republicans get back in office. I hate to bash New Mexico schools, because when I lived in Santa Fe, NM as a kid I felt my education was great compared to the Texas schools I also attended.

My Sunny Jim had his first day at school yesterday, there is a rug AND a flag. We win

Sorry-that was childish! Just adding that i think the reason the other mothers could be pissed off about the teacher that'll be leaving on maternity leave is more the lack of continuity for their kids than annoyance at another woman for having a baby!! In my experience with my older son, he gets on better with one teacher right through the year than when he has to keep having stand-ins. Good luck
