it's on hulu so I've been watching it every now and again...and I realized I don't actually identify with any of the characters in the show at all. and how I was about the same age as Angela, and I love love loved the show, but I don't remember the 90's being so brown and angsty. eh, maybe they were?

I loved that show when it was on but I haven't seen it since I re-watched it on rented VHS tapes when I was a senior in high school.

I remember being obsessed with Rayanne Graff's grape earrings. :o

My girlfriend and I were the same age as the Angela and Jordan etc. when the show aired, we just re-watched the series and the girlfriend claimed to identify more with Angela's mother than w/ Angela. yikes.

Malcom in the Middle was awesome. The episode where the Dad gets a perfect score in bowling anyone?

i remember when we were all 12 or 13, kurt cobain had recently committed suicide, and talking about how much your life sucked and how you wanted to kill yourself was the interesting topic of conversation for a good year. we were amazed at our abilities to have these "really deep" conversations, and then we'd talk about how much we loved my so called life.

then came the spice girls and life was happy again.

I loved that show when it was on but haven't seen it since. I've been thinking of adding it to the netflix queue, maybe I will. I am feeling a bit maudlin these days.

Thanks to DW, I watched a few eipsodes on hulu, too. When it was on, the critics went nuts for it and everyone was talking about what an important show it was. I remember a big article about it in Sassy magazine.

Most of my friends at the time just made fun of it. They said how unrealistic it was, how annoying and stupid the Ricky character was, and how no guy would ever let a girl walk all over him the way Brian Krakow did with Angela.

But I always secretly liked it.

I think it's so much more realistic than shows like Dawson's Creek or Gilmore Girls. People don't talk like they did on those shows! My So Called Life had people stammering and saying "like" all the time. Yeah, they were sappy and doofusy, so the show is sometimes painfully awkward to watch, I think. But that's what makes it more realistic. And Claire Danes was the perfect choice for a girl who is fascinatingly pretty but still somehow looks like the kind of girl who would get ignored and have self-esteem issues.

So, why did everyone always try to insist that Jordan was a smart guy? He seemed pretty dumb to me. And not just because he couldn't read!

And, I can't remember, was Angela supposed to have a good sense of style? It looks awful now but maybe it was cool back then. I know she had these certain boots that I wanted so badly back then. Rayanne had a pair too. I wish I knew what they were called I'd find a picture.

Poor Danielle! Angela's younger sister was constantly being told to leave the room and shut up and butt out in that family, even by her parents! She would have some issues, I think.

One thing about the show that seemed really not likely was how obsessed the parents were with Angela. They were always worried about why she didn't like them and what was wrong with her. Is this what parents of teenagers are really like? When I was a teenager I don't think my parents were all that interested in me.

The clothes she wore were fashionable at the time. I lament sometimes that I grew up during such a poor time for fashion but then I remember that I wouldn't have had that much style anyway.

I loved that show, I really need to get it on DVD, I again feel maudlin.

I think that it was good for us to grow up during grunge fashion becuase it made us low maintenance. I didn't end up spending a lot on clothes then, since I shopped at thrift stores.

But I feel like that shaped my fashion ideas only slightly, and I also got influenced by some of the bad early 2000s stuff - dressing like a hooker, clothes made of feathers and plastic during that silly disco-revival / post-apocalypse phase.

Yeah, unfortunately that time period was also my first foray into trying to be fashionable with results as you would expect.

I remember not liking the way anybody dressed on that show. I think they kind of over did the grunge thing. Angela also had this one sweater that she wore multiple times that I remember thinking was just hideous.

I was very very into matching back then though, so maybe I just didn't like all the clashing colors. People in my school dressed a whole lot plainer. It was all about oversize sweaters and t-shirts with baggy jeans. and chunky-soled shoes. crocheted vests. horizontal stripes. yes, a lot of plaid. choker necklaces...hmm, yup, I dragged out my yearbook. :) all pretty darn plain, no wild mix ups of colors and patterns. even the alternative kids are pretty plain. even the goths look plain.

these days everybody's got so many accoutrements!

Same at my high school. We did have a few rich kids, a few super goths. We were also hillbillies, though, so we had our section of camo. And lots of grateful dead t-shirts. A lot of guys were also doing a kind of Civil War type hair and goatee thing. There was a lot of middle-parted hair down to the eyebrows on them.

You once posted a picture of the popular girls from your high school and they all looked dumpy in baggy sweatshirts.
