View Full Version : What's your top 20 singles of this decade?

10 would be a little hard. I've only included songs that were actually released as singles:
Made You Look - Nas - Greatest beat ever
99 Problems - Jay-Z - A monster. 2nd verse is beyond ridiculous too
Umbrella - Rihanna feat. Jay-Z - Possibly the catchiest hook ever
The Modern Age - The Strokes - If it was called the Barely Legal EP, I probably would have picked Barely Legal
Stan - Eminem - It's between this and The Way I Am, but this is just a little more geniuser
Grindin' - Clipse - I actually like Mr Me Too a little better, but this beat was a serious statement. And Pharrell doesn't rhyme on this one
Feel Good Hit Of The Summer - QOTSA - No One Knows and Little Sister are close contenders
Blue Orchid - White Stripes - They were falling off by this point, but this song was immune to it
B.O.B. - Outkast - I can't listen to Ms Jackson or Hey Ya ever again - especially after they became your mom's favorite songs - but this one's still good
Heartbeats - The Knife - So gangster
Gold Digger - Kanye - Preferably the clean version for the "she ain't messin with no broke broke"
My Love - Justin Timberlake & T.I. - It was this or Cry Me A River, but Timbaland tainted this one with his unnecessary vocal additives a little less
What You Know - T.I. - NO EXPLANATION NECESSARY
Float On - Modest Mouse - The Mouse purists frown upon it, but that's because they are generally dicks
Paper Planes - M.I.A. - Yeah, I get tired of people pointing imaginary guns at me when they dance and sing along to it, but it's catchy
Neighborhood #1 - Arcade Fire - Don't judge me
Banquet - Bloc Party - The rhythm section on this is tighter than OJ's glove
Spread Your Love - BRMC - The bassline is just so inconsiderate and mean
Man I Used To Be - K-Os - It's like the missing song from Thriller
Idioteque - Radiohead - I tend to think that singles really should just be catchy and simple, but whatever

Singles? Hmmm...Here are the first that come to mind, in no particular order:
JT - Sexy Back
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
YYY - Maps
Kings Of Leon - Molly's Chamber
RJD2 - Ghostwriter
Modest Mouse - Float On
Radiohead - There There
The Knife - Heartbeats
Feist - My Moon My Man
MGMT - Electric Feel
Lykke Li - I'm Good I'm Gone
Twista - Overnight Celebrity (can't help it :o)
Missy Elliott - Hot Boyz or Gossip Folks
Gwen Stefani & Eve - Let Me Blow Ya Mind
Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything
I need to think some more on this one...
mickill
08-27-2009, 07:24 PM
Missy's Get Ur Freak On and Minute Man (remix) were contenders originally, but I hate Missy. Those songs were semi-infectious at one point, though. Same with Usher's Yeah.
Honorable Mentions:
Oh - Ciara ft. Ludacris
Date With Night - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Frontier Psychiatrist - The Avalanches
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem

Oh...
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster...maybe Technologic
Bon Iver - Skinnny Love
CSS - Music Is My Hot Hot Sex
Flaming Lips - Do You Realize (was that a single?)
Gorrilaz - Feel Good Inc <---- Played out? Yes. Deniable? No.

Something by The Shins and Kanye should probably be on my lists somewhere, but meh.

There's a lot of good Kanye to choose from. Jesus Walks, All Falls Down, Can't Tell Me Nothing etc....no Stronger, though
Flaming Lips - Do You Realize (was that a single?)
It was. I find it unlistenable and repetitive, but it was.
Speaking of Gorillaz, Clint Eastwood is kinda badass in a completely played out kinda way.
No DFA, Lara?

No DFA, Lara?
Maybe Black History Month, but I don't think their stuff is radio-friendly or catchy enough to be appreciated by the masses, which is what we're going for here, yes?
I think Flashing Lights would be my Kanye pick if I was forced to choose.

A few more:
Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor
Kelis - Milkshake
Snoop - Drop It Like It's Hot
There has to be some Neptunes love.
Ok, I'm stopping for now.

Right on all counts. And I agree there's little replay value there with the singles.
I completely forgot about Flashing Lights, which would definitely take the win for accompanying video. Same goes for Drop It Like It's Hot. I'd have nominated Milkshake or Crazy in Love myself, but I'm supposed to have a penis.

If DDD says There There is a single, then I'll pick that. I love it mostly because it's so fun to see them play all the drums.

It WAS a single! That was like the only one on my list that I was positive about. :)
And yes, I agree about watching them play that song, especially during the 2006 tour when they had that crazy backdrop with multiple screens of close up shots of all of their instruments. Holy buckets. (y)

What does "released as singles" mean in the 2000s?
Well, not just something that spread virally and charted on iTunes, but songs that were actually intended to be distributed to media outlets and preferably were pressed on some sort of tangible format at one point.

1. There There - Radiohead
2. Jumpers - Sleater-Kinney (it had a video thus I guess it was a single).
3. Beck - Rental Car -- if that was a single. I haven't loved any of his albums in a long time but I am a sucker for a song with handclapping.

7. Keep Fishin' - Weezer (muppets! and how cute are those guys in that video?) -- see also Island in the Sun (cute baby animals!)

8. Strange Overtones - David Byrne and Brian Eno -- that song makes me so fucking happy -- I listen to it on the way to work all the time.
9. Ooh la la - Goldfrapp
10. Robot Rock - Daft Punk (another one that charts because it's fun live -- I know they have better songs but this one makes me happy -- another going to work song)
11. I want to pick Superconnected by Broken Social Scene but wikipedia says that Fire Eye'd Boy was the single. :(
12. I want to pick Right Where It Belongs by NIN but wikipedia says that other songs were the singles. :( :(
13. I like the catchiness of American Idiot, Float On, and Take Me Out even though I am not a fan of any of those bands. :o
14. Cherry Blossom Girl - Air
15. Do You Realize - Flaming Lips
There are many bad but catchy songs that evoke the early 90s - ones I don't like but I would leave on the radio without changing the station. Cry Me a River, or Jennifer Lopez Love Don't Cost a Thing, or something Destiny's Child did. I even sort of liked that Pink song at the time (Family Portrait)? I can't put any of that on my list though.

All of these are real good choices, I mean it. But I want to make just one slight exception to the Strokes choices, because obviously "You Only Live Once (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBgVtT3qA2M&feature=channel)" is the Strokes finest song, single and a complete masterstroke of all singles released in the year of 2006.

They're a band with one powerful sneaky rhythm section, rhythm guitar, bass, drums and a killer lead guitarist... so it's easy to get hung up on any one song.
You Only Live Once was released as a single (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Only_Live_Once_(song)), it had a big fan push. The newer video is cool because it uses a part of Jimmy Carters Panama Canal Treaty Signing speech, in the midst of the Bush years it was hard to phantom such optimism.
This opens a new chapter in our relations with all nations of this hemisphere, and it testifies to the maturity and the good judgment and the decency of our people. This agreement is a symbol for the world of the mutual respect and cooperation among all our nations. Thank you very much for your help

if we can add stuff from 1999, then i'd mention "hip hop" dead prez
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI&feature=related
one of my fave rap songs ever
i'd also give ludacris some credit for ripping two of the best pop songs of the decade: "oh" and "yeah"
in hindsight, luda killed it in 2000 with "southern hospitality" and "what's your fantasy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qggGUiwg6pA&feature=channel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x63Ym-P-Uo&feature=channel
should also mention dnb cos i used to go out to shows all the time in the early 00s.
this song was huge - LK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qgH1MURhvs
but probably my fave song of that time was 3am by intalex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8zWbpv8HKQ

Yeah, that was a great song. For me it's a toss up btw that one and Everybody Got Their Something.
Gotta say, I didn't really enjoy much else that she did, tho.

Actually when I bought the album, no not really. But that one grew on me over time. That's a nice performance of it.
