Any mp3s out there of the original Sure Shot with the French woman on the answering machine?

That is B-Boys Makin With The Freak Freak, and it is on some (if not all) of the non US issues of Ill Communication.... I know for certain that it is on the Holland issue of the CD.

its definitely on my US issue of the record. aside from the phone message, all the versions of that song are same anyway, correct?

The way I recall, the Beasties had the vinyl release of Ill Communication out through Grand Royal before the major label drop- and they were sued or were threatened with a lawsuit and had to remove the answering machine message. I believe there wasn't more than a couple thousand pressings of that version... And it was at the very beginning of the album before the dog barks... I could be wrong though.

what about the version of 3 MC's and 1 DJ from the info commercial? I've always wanted to come across that.

I had it the day it came out, and have since lost and forgotten about french lady. I miss her

i'm confused. the french lady at the beginning of BBoys Makin With the Freak Freak, right? The "I was just talking crazy bullshit about you one second ago" chick? I bought IC for the first time in prolly 1998-99 from a Best Buy and that shit was still on there. Is that a rare version? I find it hard to believe it was a limited pressing thing, cuz I bought the record 4-5 years after it was released from a major outlet.

Maybe they eventually cleared it. Is it on the remastered version?

You are correct sir McDuff. BBMWTFF is on all versions, but the answering machine message is not on the US version and as far as I can tell the rest of the song is the same.

"The way I recall, the Beasties had the vinyl release of Ill Communication out through Grand Royal before the major label drop- and they were sued or were threatened with a lawsuit and had to remove the answering machine message. Don't recall anything about this, but am pretty certain there was never a version where the phone message came as the intro to the album, just as an intro to BBMWTFF.

"what about the version of 3 MC's and 1 DJ from the info commercial? I've always wanted to come across that."

The whole infomercial is on The US The Hiatus Is Back Off Again promo CD (there is a UK and Holland version as well). I think this is also available as a promo acetate but I am not certain.

I don't really have an answer, but it is an interesting question, I will go through my copies and see what I can find out.

I'm not sure the French Lady was on any of the US pressings. That sample was on ALL of the non-US pressings I've come across. So, if you're in the UK, Canada, Japan, etc., the sample should be on there right before B-boys Makin' w/ the Freak Freak. Also, if you have the green vinyl "Grand Royal" pressing of the vinyl, that's a Canadian pressing, which is why its on there.

Back when Grand Royal was around they often did their own small-batch pressings of records & CDs. Sometimes they did colored vinyl (like Root Down, which was also a Canadian press, and the Insound From Way Out & Hello Nasty, which had colored vinyl U.S. pressings). For Some Old Bullshit, Grand Royal did a pink/red colored plastic CD trays. You can tell if you the Grand Royal pressing because the release doesn't reference Capital Records on it. The large-batch Capital Records releases reference BOTH Grand Royal AND Capital Records. So, if it doesn't say "Capital Records" you have the small-batch press.

As far as I've seen, Ill Communication never had a small-batch Grand Royal release for the U.S. The only small-batch Grand Royal press I've ever seen anywhere is the green vinyl Canadian version.

Hello Nasty also had different versions of samples depending on the country. The Japanese version had the "can't stop won't stop" sample and the U.S. realease didn't. In fact, they change the song title from "Can't Stop Won't Stop" to "The Grashopper Unit" on the U.S. versions. Hello Nasty had Grand Royal vinly pressings in gold and black but the tracks were the same as the CD. As for 3 MCs and 1 DJ, I've never seen an official release anywhere with the "every single day" Snoop sample. Right after the album came out I did a tratde and I got a copy of the recording from somewhere, along with the Eric Sermon Body Moving remix. But I could never find any official release (promo or otherwise) where those tracks might have come from. I always wondered how the public got their hands on those tracks. Did someone leak them or are they from an acetate or what?

Anway, this brings me to Beastiemania.com, which is an awesome website, but the one thing they've never put on there is differences with the audio on the different versions. They go into extra-ordinary detail on the packaging differences but don't even mention the audio differences. I'd be interested to see that info put on the discography too.

Whoah, we were writing simultanious novels. So the 3MCs & 1 DJ original version is on the Hiatus CD? I should pick that up. I have a promo VHS but not the CD.

Regardless, very cool bit of information you've got there. :)

How is the version you are looking for different than the standard release (I don't recognize the snoop dog sample you're talking about).

The original version of 3MCs and 1DJ has different samples in the chorus. They couldn't get some samples cleared so they had to change them when the album dropped. The biggest change was that, on the original version it used a Snoop Dogg sample and went "Bug-out to the Mike, Every Single Day". That got changed to "Bug-out to the Mike, all the time."

Almost immediately after Hello Nasty came out I did a trade with a guy and he got me studio versions of the original version of 3MCs and 1DJ, and the Body Movin' Eric Sermon Remix. There was some talk about these alternate versions on the board but I don't think any bootlegs were around yet because I probably would have known about it (especially back then).

Somewhere there is an interview where either Mike or the Beasties talk about being frustrated because Dr. Dre wanted crazy loot fo the "every single day" sample (it comes from Gin & Juice on Snoop's Doggystyle album). After the whole James Newton suit and whatnot they were probably just like "fuck it" we'll find something else, but they were pissed because it fit so perfect in the song.

The same sort of thing happened with the Can't Stop Won't Stop sample but they got that cleared for Europe somehow.

Well, I don't know where to find it, but it isn't on the Canada CD promo, the UK acetate CD version (from Abbey Road), the UK CD promo, the EU CD promo, the UK 2 part CD single, or the EU CD single. Give me some time and I'll check the vinyl versions I have.

Haha, awesome.

First chorus "Bug out to the Mike every single day" (instead of "Bug out to the Mike all the time"

Second chorus "Gotta, gotta, gotta be fresh" (instead of "Gotta, gotta, gotta get down"

The rest of the cut is pretty much the same. I pretty sure its not on any commercial release. The best bet would be an early promo/acetate because they seemed to catch the sample issue before discs were going out to radio stations & whatnot. My best guess would have been the April 23 UK acetate or one the June US acetates but maybe it was something that leaked earlier than that.

Checking my e-mails it was actually not until March of 2000 that I got those tracks. For some reason I thought it was fall or winter of 1998. 10 years will do shit to your memory. I got them from Dustin. We had a pretty massive trade-off. Cool guy.

The original 3 mcs sample is on the hello nasty instrumental record. Someone (lets just call him Sir Dan for example) was buying and repressing these records into Grand Royal bootleg sleeves and then re-selling them in the US. Its called the Hello nasty show vinyl.

I do like the snoop dogg sample better but it was to obvious and without clearance they would have gotten mad sued from Dre, or Death Row.

Yeah, I'm completely aware that BBMWTFF is on all versions; what I'm saying is the US version I bought from Best Buy in 1999 had the french woman on it. By that time I don't know if the record was reissued or not, but it was on there then. Sorry, maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. :o

Yeah, if anything it would be on early promos of the whole album. By the time the single dropped they had already determined it wasn't going to clear.
