View Full Version : Looking back on this last decade...

Would you say that there was considerably less or more "significance" to the 00s than say the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s? Will future generations look back on this decade for much more than 9/11, Obama, the war, the recession, or the advent of myspace and facebook? What are your thoughts on this decade in relation to previous ones?

Really, I just can't believe that ten years have gone by since the Y2K hype. And now there's less than 4 months left of this decade. Not to say that a lot hasn't happened in the last 10 years. If I had to try and sum up this decade with just one sentiment, I'd say that there was too much information and communication, and not enough life. I'm going back to analog in 2010.

I think huge significant things changed our way of life, but no more than other decades. The 60s brought us distrust of government. The 70s brought us unreliable economy. The 80s brought us AIDS. The 90s.....? The 00s brings us near-crashing stock market, oil crisis, housing market crisis, war on terror at home.....I can only think of how it affected the US, of course.

I'll probably think of it as the decade where everything seemed to speed up. It feels to me like the last few decades have been like a ball rolling. It started on a flatish surface but now it's hit the friction point and is rolling down a hill.

Or maybe that's just my own life.

any decade has more "significance" than the 90's... as far as music goes. that's one bland decade.

i think there's been some great music that came out this decade. probably because there's such a large amount of people starting bands or just making music solo that's accessible because of the internet. there's an overwhelming amount of music to choose from compared to any previous decade.

I was actually just thinking the 00s have sucked, mainly due to what's happened culturally, with music, fashion and I guess the popularity of reality shows. I suppose more access to information is a gift, but it has its disadvantages. There's no mystery to anybody anymore. We have access to every single detail about famous people's lives, whether they choose to be forthcoming about it or not. Wikipedia, blogs, vlogs, youtube, and popular media fill in the blanks. The most untalented and useless people (Paris Hilton) have become household names, whether we care to know who they are or would rather avoid it. Nobody wants to be out of the loop. We want the information to be portable; it's on our laptops, our cell phones; in our cars. The hype is everywhere.

Global warming, American Idol, tsunamis, hurricanes, the octomom, Britney Spears; have I missed anything?

No, early to mid 90s rap music is pretty much where it peaked. And commercial rock music in the 90s was significantly better than what we have now.

I was not going to post because I feel pretty much the same as you do in the above post.

It's fucking depressing.

I will admit that 90s Jazz was by far the worst Jazz music ever, with special thanks to Kenny G.

nothing against commercial rock... i like commercial rock from the 50's to 80's... but...

"commercial rock music in the 90s was significantly better than what we have now" isn't saying much... perhaps it's just my personal taste... but i find bands like alice in chains and nickelback equally nauseating.

what are some albums from the 90's you would consider amazing? don't even waste my time with nirvana and pavement bullshit.

some of my FEW 90's favorites would be...

"Loveless" - My Bloody Valentine
"Chill Out" - The KLF
"Violator" - Depeche Mode
"Heaven or Las Vegas" - Cocteau Twins
"Weezer (The Blue Album)" - Weezer
"76:14" - Global Communication
"Premiers Symptomes" - Air
"OK Computer" - Radiohead
"Portishead" - Portishead
"TNT" - Tortoise
"Jet Generation" - Guitar Wolf
"Laughing Stock"- Talk Talk

and most of those are from the very beginning or very end of the decade. i forgot to mention i'm not a big fan of rap...

I think this decade has seen some huge changes, globally.

By contast I think the 90s were quite quiet. That was the time of "the end of history"....the Soviet Union had collapsed and it looked as though Western liberal democracy was going to flourish worldwide...

Now, China is a big player, the world economy is teetering on collapse (or so they'd have you feel), non-Western nations are alot more empowered now and have alot more international clout.

I think this change is also exponentially getting greater...the next decade will be even madder.

I wouldn't be surprised if Paul Jones' 'end of the world' thread becomes more relevant in the next ten years.

These days everything is so diluted.

Whatever you want (or don't want) there is so much of it to choose from.

There's very little that's outstanding these days, whether music or anything else.

Lets just call it the "Dick Cheney Decade" a decade of leaders when faced with accountability for the planets problems just said "So".

Wait, maybe we should call it the "Just say So" decade.

We are encapsulated in a callous of CO2.

If you didn't care for Siamese Dream, Nevermind, Dookie, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Use Your Illusion, or Ten, that's fine. But I'd take them over the commercial rock music we have today, which is generally either uninspired rehashing of 60s garage or tremendously poppy cookie-cutter hipster nonsense. Or worse|: of the Three Days Grace/3 Doors Down/Finger Eleven/Sevendust variety.

And Britpop in general definitely had its moments.

On the less commercial side of things, Liz Phair, Kyuss, the best Ween and Beck albums etc.

If you listened to rap, I'd really son you.

If he doesn't listen to rap is it likely he'll know what this means?

If the insult falls on ignorant ears, is it still an insult?

It's a pretty narcissistic decade, what with all the picture taking and personal profiles and whatnot. and everybody's always commenting on things rather than doing actual things.

I'm actually kind of positive about the whole thing though, I think communication is good, I think there will be a boiling point and things are gonna get more nutsy than they already are...but then all of a sudden people are gonna be more creative and accomplish really great things. like a renaissance of sorts.

it's weird, it's like the beginning of the decade didn't really count and was still like the 90's until 2004. I mean, I still had dial up then, everyone had land lines and used them more than their cell phones. now I hardly know anyone who even has a land line. and before that, people just used regular telephones for decades, with little variation. answering machines showed up and it was like, "WHOA, NO WAY", and then call waiting hit the scene and it was like, "HOLY SHIT". now people have tiny magic computers in their pockets all the time.

it used to be a lot easier to impress people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZfbN02_9Jw

This was insightful. I agree that communication is good. But it can also be a constant distraction from progress.

Maybe I'm just old and out of the loop but I think it was a pretty shitty decade overall, despite my personal life being pretty cool. There is good music out there and I went to a shitload of concerts in this decade in all kinds of far flung locations. I had a ton of fun. But mainstream music was weaker and movies REALLY got shitty. At least with music there were new avenues that made it easier to find good music. With movies, the big corporate movies were terrible and the indies were almost nonexistent. And small indie theaters (revival or otherwise) disappeared in most cities. It's not the same watching a movie at home by yourself months later. I miss lining up outside and then going inside and laughing along with a packed house full of people. Stadium theaters in the suburbs that are all playing the same movie are no substitute.

hahah the first few days I owned a G1 I was confused about what my routine should be when I first arrive home since I could now check facebook and gmail from my phone :(

The 2000s was basically1980s redux minus the creativity.
