i didn't see a recent thread worth using, so this is a new thread to discuss the joys of coffee
i would like to start off the discussion with a question about your suggested bean/roast. i am currently working right next to a plethora of coffee shops, but what really interests me is the place that has hundreds of types of beans for me to choose from. currently, my favorite brew comes from duncan donuts, but i would like to branch out a bit.
any suggestions on a good flavor?

Glad you created a coffee thread. Below are my preferences.
Freshly roasted super dark is my weapon of choice. Below are three stores in three countries that have my favorite cup of java:

I'll drink anything that is organic, roasted locally(ish) and fair trade certified. and I prefer dark roasts (natch)

I'm pretty much down with any fresh ground italian or french roast...at home I tend to take the french roast and mix it with a crema gusta that you can snag at most Ital delis...espresso oro which means 100 percent Arabica is what my dad drinks and what I first remember as coffee...
And of course everything illy pretty much rules:

when it comes to making the coffee italians do it best.

that's a tuff statement cause so manycultures have different brew styles...the turks do it really well...so do the Lebanese and french and even vietnamese...I don't care for greek coffee that much they tend to sugar before serve...they're all a little different...I think sometimes ital espresso is a little bitter...for me I think the Spaniard's do the very best cafe con leche,hands down...

well i prefer my coffee undisturbed, so the style plays an important part for me.
here's the place (http://nicholascoffee.com/) that i have been going to the past week. it smells fabulous in there and they roast their beans on site, which is pretty cool.
so far i haven't been disappointed with what they have served up so far. the house blend was pretty solid, i was surprised at how good the Kenya AA tasted compared to when i had it elsewhere, and today the almond joy tastes almost as good as it smells!

I've been roasting my own beans off and on for the past 5 years, I buy them online from a place in Cali called Sweet Marias. (http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.greencoffee.mvc.php) I use this roaster (http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.hearthwareiRoast2.php) and just follow the super easy instructions (http://www.sweetmarias.com/roasting-VisualGuideV2.php). I have 3 other friends who roast their own beans now too, so we swap details on what is good. It takes about 10 minutes for the batch to be done (3 - 4 pots worth) and then you have amazingly fresh brew. I usually wait a day or two before I grind the beans... there is a de-gassing period right after the roasting, so fresh roasted coffee isn't that good. 24 hour old roasted coffee kicks ass. I also will drink any other form of coffee, I am not picky I even like Starbucks Americano's. But once you've adapted to fresh brewed coffee it's hard to take any other brew seriously.
I have more than just a bit of OCD with certain hobbies. Coffee is a blast, also where I work is ideal for roasting, because there is a bit of smokiness from the process, you need a very strong indoor exhaust or a nice day out on the deck.

Cool beans yeahwho -- I agree that the best way to enjoy coffee is to roast your own. Some people who cannot afford a good roaster use old school air blown pop corn makers with varying success.

i began to consider the possibilities of roasting my own coffee when i found out that the place i like to go does their own and i could easily purchase some un-roasted product from there.
is getting one of those machines the only practical way to do your own roasting? i have one of those old school air pop things that i could try. but pending on the price, i don't know if i would want to really invest on a separate machine for that....
There's nothing so good as a big jug of freshly brewed coffee to liven up and lubricate my morning stool. :cool:
